ATP world number 3 Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios both withdrew from the Citi Open in Washington, tournament organizers confirmed on Wednesday. The tournament is largely viewed as a warm-up leading to the US Open Grand Slam.

Medvedev, who lifted the US Open trophy in 2021, has exhibited fine form this season, winning tournaments in Rotterdam, Doha, Dubai, Miami, and Rome since the start of 2023. The Russian player made it to the semifinals of Wimbledon where he was eliminated by eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz.

Kyrgios, the defending Citi Open champion, has suffered a slew of injuries this season to his knee, foot, and wrist. As a result, he has only managed to appear in one match; a loss in straight sets at the Stuttgart Open in June.

Medvedev and Kyrgios previously met in the 2019 final of the Citi Open, where Kyrgios won the tournament for the first time. The Citi Open runs from July 31 to August 6, while the US Open gets underway in New York City on August 28.

Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios announced on Sunday that he is withdrawing from the 2023 edition of Wimbledon. Kyrgios, who reached the finals at All England Club last year, revealed that he is dealing with a wrist injury.

Kyrgios previously missed the better part of the 2023 tennis season dealing with a torn meniscus in his knee.

“I’m really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year,” Kyrgios shared in an Instagram story. “I tried my hardest to be ready after my surgery and to be able to step on the Wimbledon courts again. During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during the week of Mallorca. As a precaution, I had it scanned, and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist.”

Kyrgios was diagnosed with a torn meniscus just as he was set to play his first match at the 2023 Australian Open. He underwent arthroscopic surgery and spent several months recovering before making his comeback in early June at Stuttgart Open.

Kyrgios’ withdrawal from Wimbledon also comes at short notice. He was supposed to head out on the court on Monday and play David Goffin in the first round.

Before being sidelined with a knee injury, Kyrgios was playing some of the best tennis of his career throughout 2022. Besides reaching his first Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon, he also reached the quarterfinals at US Open, marking his best result at the tournament. He also won the Australian Open title in doubles.

We won’t get to enjoy Nick Kyrgios’ antics and jaw-dropping tennis moves at the 2023 Australian Open. The Australia native announced on Monday that he is forced to miss the tournament due to a knee injury.

According to Kyrgios, he will be forced to undergo an arthroscopic procedure after a small tear and a cyst in his lateral meniscus was discovered during a routine MRI scan. The news came less than 24 hours before the 27-year-old player was set to take the court against Roman Safiullin in the first round.

“I’m devastated. It’s brutal,” said Kyrgios. “This is my home tournament, and obviously winning the tournament in doubles [last year] and playing the best tennis of my life. All I can do is my best to come back.”

Nick Kyrgios was considered Australia’s best chance to have a home Australian Open winner in a while. The last time an Australian won the tournament was in 1976, when Mark Edmondson did it, while the country’s most recent Grand Slam win came in 2002 when Lleyton Hewitt won Wimbledon.

Kyrgios was coming off a year in which he played some of his best tennis. He made his first Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon in 2022 while also reaching the quarterfinals at US Open for his best result at the tournament. He is currently the No. 21 ranked tennis player in the world.

Nick Kyrgios made a praise-worthy effort, but not even the talented 27-year-old player managed to unseat Novak Djokovic from his Wimbledon throne. Djokovic returned from one set deficit in the finals match of the 2022 tournament to beat Kyrgios in four sets and claim his seventh Wimbledon title and 21st career Grand Slam.

Djokovic had a habit of starting matches slowly during this year’s Wimbledon run, and it was more of the same against first-time Grand Slam finalist Kyrgios. The Australian took the first set by staying strong on his serve and taking advantage of the one break chance Djokovic gave him. However, it turned out that this wasn’t a foreshadowing of a big upset.

Instead, Djokovic, as he always does, tighten up his game and rose to the occasion. At the biggest moment of the match, he would routinely show bigger mental strength than Kyrgios. This included saving three break points while serving for the second set and breaking Kyrgios in the third set at 4-4.

The fourth set was the biggest nail-biter, heading to a tie-break, but at that point, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Djokovic would take it all. He raced to a 6-1 lead and then patiently weathered Kyrgios’ comeback attempt to take it all.

By beating Kyrgios, Djokovic extended his unbeaten run at Wimbledon to 28 matches. He has won the past four tournaments, and his seven Wimbledon titles trail only Roger Federer, who has eight.

“I’ve said it many times, this tournament is extra special for me because it has been the first tournament I ever watched as a kid that got me to start playing tennis,” said Djokovic. “The more you win, it’s logical the more confident, the more comfortable you feel next time you step out on the court. So the run keeps going and I feel very connected with this court and this tournament, without a doubt.”

Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios are set to meet again at Wimbledon’s Center Court. This time, however, the stakes are the highest they have ever been, with the Wimbledon finals appearance for the taking.

Nadal has to work hard to secure semi-finals at this year’s tournament, being a set down twice in his quarterfinals clash against the American Taylor Fritz. The Grand Slam recorder bounced back each time and then survived a tiebreak in the fifth set to claim a memorable 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (10-4) win.

Kyrgios, on the other hand, was much more convincing. He is on to the next round after straight sets (6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (5)) win over Chilean Cristian Garin. The match against Nadal will be the first Grand Slam semi-finals appearance for the 27-year-old Australian.

Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios have an intriguing head-to-head history, with their best matches coming at Wimbledon. The duo first faced each other at the All England Club in 2014 in Round 16. Kyrgios, making his Wimbledon debut, beat Nadal, the world’s No. 1 one at the time, in four sets. Nadal would go on to return the favor in 2019 when he beat Kyrgios in Round of 64.

Nadal won six matches, while Kyrgios has three wins in their head-to-head clashes. They most recently faced each other in the quarterfinals of 2022 Indian Wells, with Nadal being triumphant after three sets.

Nadal opened the match strong, breaking Kyrgios service early and winning 17 out of 19 points on his first serve to finish the first set in 36 minutes with 6-3 result. Kyrgios quickly bounced back, holding off Nadal from breaking again in the first game, which lasted impressive 10 minutes. The 24-year-old crowd favorite ten quickly got to 4-1 lead and managed to claim the second set.

The third set offered quality tennis, with both tennis players trying to get the upper hand in the match. Eventually, the set ended in a tiebreak, with Nadal managing to get the better of Kyrgios.

Kyrgios pushed Nadal in the fourth set, which also went to a tiebreak, but eventually couldn’t get overcome the Spaniard’s explosiveness and relentlessness.

“Against Nick you are never in control,” said Nadal after the match. “If you have mistakes, then he has the break, and it’s so difficult to break him again. When he is playing like today, with a positive attitude, he gives a lot of positive things to our sport. He’s one of the highest talents that we have on our tour, and I like this Nick Kyrgios.”

Rafael Nadal will now meet Austrian Dominic Thiem, No.5 tennis player in the world, in quarterfinals. Thiem previously defeated Gael Monfils in the fourth round without losing a set.

This week, the Rogers Cup in Canada is attracting the eyes of tennis fans from all over the world progressing towards the final happening this weekend. While the American Kenin threw World #1 Barty out of the competition, the British #1, Kyle Edmund, managed to defeat the Australian Nick Kyrgios, progressing into the second round of the Cup.

The 24-year-old Edmund beat Kyrgios in straight sets during the spectacular match in Montreal, finishing with a final score of 6-3, 6-4, inflicting a humiliating defeat upon the Washington Champion. The match lasted for 67 minutes and was briefly interrupted by rain during the second set.

The Australian showed his unique temper once again when he engaged in an argument with the chair umpire, demanding a white towel instead of the branded one he got. The umpire told him that he wasn’t allowed to leave his chair but Kyrgios insisted that he asks for a towel on the radio. He got his towel around 20 minutes later but Edmund took advantage of his loss of temper.

Now the British #1 will be facing the Russian eighth seed Daniil Medvedev in his attempt at the Rogers Cup title.
