The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to an extension with their star defensive end Nick Bosa just in time to have him on the field for Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Bosa, who didn’t participate in training camp looking for a new deal, reportedly became the highest-paid non-quarterback in the history of the league. The 25-year-old received a five-year contract that will pay him $170 million, including $122.5 million guaranteed.

The 49ers confirmed Bosa’s extension on social media but didn’t reveal the financial details of the agreement. The Ohio State product had one year left on his rookie deal that pays him $18.9 million in 2023.

Bosa was a holdout to start the preseason after he and the 49ers failed to agree to an extension earlier in the year. The negotiations between the two sides dragged out longer than anyone expected, causing the 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan to plan the Steelers game as if his best defensive player won’t be on the field.

Shanahan actually only found out the news about Bosa’s extension several minutes before he was set to have a press conference on Wednesday.

“I think our team was ready to not [have him], and that was our mindset, and it was a hell of a bonus just getting told that coming in here. So we’re obviously real excited about it,” Shanahan told reporters.

Nick Bosa finished the 2022 campaign, leading the league with 18.5 sacks while adding 51 tackles and two forced fumbles. He was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year while picking up his third Pro Bowl nod and a First-team All-Pro selection.

The San Francisco 49ers are not thinking about trading their star defensive end Nick Bosa despite the holdup in contract negotiations between the two sides. The team’s general manager John Lynch made sure to point that out in a recent chat with reporters.

Speaking about Bosa’s situation on Wednesday, Lynch was asked at one point whether there is a possibility that the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year gets dealt.

“No, real simple,” Lynch responded while adding that there is no update on Bosa’s contractual situation at the moment.

49ers’ head coach Kyle Shanahan later echoed Lynch’s words.

“No, I feel pretty strongly, and I think everyone would agree with that,” Shanahan said about trading Bosa.

Nick Bosa is set to enter the final year of his rookie deal. He was eligible for an extension last year, but the two sides agreed to wait until 2023 to work on it. However, the talks haven’t progressed as the two sides imagined, causing Bosa to hold out and miss the entire training camp. The 25-year-old is presumably looking to become the highest-paid defensive player in the game, either in terms of average annual salary or most guaranteed money.

Bosa is coming off a career year in which he led the league with 18.5 sacks despite playing just 16 games. Aside from winning the Defensive Player of the Year, he also earned his third Pro Bowl and was named First-team All-Pro.

According to the San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has a high-ankle sprain and might need to have surgery to fix it.

Garoppolo already missed time for a high-ankle sprain earlier in the season, but this injury is apparently more severe. Without surgery, it could take the quarterback between four and six weeks to get back on the field.

However, if Garoppolo does decide to have surgery, he would be done for the season.

After playing in the Super Bowl last year, the 49ers are having a very underwhelming season. They have also had a lot of bad luck with injuries, with many of their star players either done for the season or out for an extended period of time.

Their best defensive player Nick Bosa suffered a season-ending ACL injury in Week 2. Most recently, the 49ers lost star tight end George Kittle to a broken foot. He will most likely miss eight weeks.

Garoppolo’s play has been underwhelming this season, even when he has been healthy. In six games, the 29-year-old quarterback has passed for less than 1,100 yards, with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.

The 49ers are currently 4-4 and currently at the bottom of the tough NFC West division.

Even though the San Francisco 49ers blew out the New York Jets 31-13 on Sunday, they ended up losing a handful of key players to injuries.

After the game, San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said that the turf at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, played a significant role in the injuries.

Shanahan said that several players complained to him about the turf being sticky, saying that they were worried about injuries. Worst of all for the 49ers, they are going to be playing in the same stadium next week against the New York Giants.

The biggest injury that San Francisco suffered was to their star defensive end and last year’s Rookie of the Year, Nick Bosa. The dominant defender was carted off the field in pain and earlier indications are that he has torn his ACL and will be out for the season.

The 49ers defense suffered another huge blow, also losing defensive end Solomon Thomas. He is also believed to have torn his ACL, which leaves the defending NFC champs without two key pieces of their vaunted defensive front.

To add insult to injury, San Francisco’s starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo also left the game with a high-ankle sprain is expected to miss a few weeks of action.

But it doesn’t end their either. Running back Raheem Mostert suffered what the team believes is an MCL sprain. His backup Tevin Coleman also suffered a knee injury.

League officials have reported that grounds experts are going to investigate the issues at Metlife Stadium before next Sunday to see what can be improved in order to prevent further injuries.

It looks like San Francisco 49ers fans will have to wait a bit longer before seeing the rookie defensive end Nick Bosa in action. Bosa, who was the second overall pick in this year’s draft, suffered an ankle sprain which will likely keep him out of team’s preseason games.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport, Bosa exited the practice on Wednesday with an injury and underwent an MRI. The test showed a mild sprain, but the 49ers are expected to be cautious with the 21-year-old due to his injury history.

“I think he’s alright,” – said San Francisco’s defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. “I still haven’t heard from the performance staff, but I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.”

Nick Bosa played only three games during 2018 college season before undergoing a core muscle surgery which ruled him out for the year. Bosa just recently fully recovered and which is why 49ers don’t want to take too many risks as they see him as an integral piece of their team for 2019 season.

Bosa wasn’t the only San Francisco 49ers’ player to get hurt on Wednesday, as veteran cornerback Jason Verrett also suffered a minor sprain. Verrett also has a long injury history, as he previously suffered from ACL and Achilles injuries which limited him to only five games since 2016.
