Former MVP and long-time Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has found a new home in the league, signing a one-year deal with the New England Patriots to serve as Tom Brady’s replacement.

Newton, who was released by the Panthers earlier this off-season after two injury-plagued seasons and the signing of free-agent quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, will step into an ideal situation to revive his career in New England.

The former #1 overall pick expressed his excitement in an Instagram post on Sunday night, saying “I’m excited as I don’t know what right now!” together with the hashtag “#LETSgoPATS.”

Newton, one of the most decorated quarterbacks in the league, missed nearly the entirety of the 2019 season after suffering a Lisfranc injury that kept him off the field for all but two games.

He also struggled in 2018 as the Panthers failed to make the playoffs after playing through a shoulder injury throughout the season.

While Newton will not be guaranteed a starting job in New England, he figures to be the favorite to assume the reins as the Patriots’ first full-time starting quarterback other than Tom Brady since the turn of the Millenium.

Newton will compete for the starting job under Bill Belichick along with Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer, and look to lead the Patriots to another strong season.
