The Jacksonville Jaguars appear to have settled on their final target for their vacant head coaching job and are entering advanced negotiations with legendary college coach Urban Meyer.

Jacksonville dismissed former head coach Doug Marrone this season after the team limped to a 1-15 record, the worst in the NFL. Marrone was let go despite leading the Jaguars to the 2017 AFC South championship after his teams regressed over the past three years.

Former Ohio State and Florida head coach Urban Meyer was long said to be interested in the job, and media reports have indicated that he could be close to agreeing to sign on to look to turn around one of the NFL’s longest-suffering franchises.

Meyer, who won two national championships with Florida and one with Ohio State, left his most recent job after the 2018 season due to what was described as health reasons.

If the Jaguars and Meyer are ultimately to agree to a deal that will likely make the Ohio native one of the highest-paid coaches in the league, he will have the first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and a team with plenty of talent which has nonetheless not been able to find success or consistency.

Meyer would become their seventh head coach in franchise history.

After a disastrous 0-5 start to the 2019 season, the Washington Redskins found themselves with no alternatives. They had to fire coach Jay Gruden, and they did so on Monday after Washington´s blowout loss to the Patriots on Sunday.

Gruden leaves Washington after five full seasons at the helm of the team, in which he won one NFC East title in 2015 and only managed to play in one playoff game, a Wild Card weekend loss to the Green Bay Packers in that same season.

The Ohio natives tenure with Washington was defined, quite simply, by mediocrity. Gruden’s teams never broke the nine-win barrier in his term with the Skins, finishing either just over or just under the .500 mark in every season except 2014, when the team went 4-12.

After the disastrous start to this season, Gruden leaves the franchise with a ghastly 35-49-1 mark as head coach.

The Redskins, who are currently one of four winless teams in the league, named former Raiders coach Bill Callahan as interim head coach for the rest of the season. He will look to inject some life into a team that has, frankly, looked uncompetitive so far in the 2019 season.

The NFL preseason is heating up, with only two games left on the summer slate and two weeks to go until the regular season kicks off.

While this time of the year is usually a time for optimism and fresh beginnings, there is more than a handful of coaches that are feeling the pressure going into the season for various reasons. While coaches like Bill Belichick and Sean Payton might not be worried about their job security, some coaches know that they either must perform in 2019 or find themselves without a position.

Here are four NFL coaches that are on the hot seat and under pressure going into the beginning of the 2019 season.

Jay Gruden: Washington Redskins

Jay Gruden joked before the season started that he knows that he’ll be on his way out in Washington if his team doesn’t qualify for the playoffs in 2019, and it seems like that scenario is more likely than not.

Gruden has spent five years at the helm of the Redskins without accomplishing a playoff win, and this is the last year of his contract. If he doesn’t qualify this year, which will be a big task without injured QB Alex Smith, he could be on his way out.

Doug Marrone: Jacksonville Jaguars

Marrone’s Jaguars were the talk of the league in 2017, making a surprise run to the AFC Championship Game before eventually falling to the New England Patriots.

His team last year was a huge disappointment, finishing with a 5-11 record in last place in the AFC South. If the Jags don’t get their mojo back in 2019, it seems likely that the Marrone Magic in Florida will have run out.

Jason Garrett: Dallas Cowboys

Being the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys is never easy, and it’s even more difficult when the pressure is on after you haven’t made a Super Bowl after nine years on the job.

Garrett and the Cowboys are undergoing a rough preseason, with contract negotiations stalling the arrivals of QB Dak Prescott and RB Ezekiel Elliott to camp. This could lead the team to struggle with drama and ineffectiveness, which could lead to Garrett’s decade in Dallas coming to a close.

Pat Shurmur: New York Giants

Pat Shurmur has only been at the helm of the Giants for one season, but the disastrous 5-11 season that he led the team to last year has some fans already calling for his head.

The Giants don’t figure to be much better this season in the ultra-competitive NFC East, and he could be forced out if the team doesn’t at least compete for a playoff spot.

After winning Super Bowl LIII on Sunday, Brian Flores took the next step in his career, moving from the Patriots to become the Dolphins’ next head coach.

Miami fired head coach Adam Gase at the conclusion of the NFL season after an underwhelming 7-9 season. The Dolphins’ new head coach comes from a longtime division rival that they are aiming to dethrone in the coming years.

Flores spent 15 years with the Patriots before making the move to Miami. He started out as a scout, then worked his way up the coaching ranks to become the Patriots’ linebackers coach and defensive playcaller in the 2016 season.

The Dolphins’ new head man, who is only 37 years old, played linebacker for Boston College from 1999 to 2003. He is a native of Brooklyn, New York.

The Miami franchise has been in a rut lately, only qualifying once for the playoffs in the past 10 seasons. Flores might have to wait to qualify again with Miami, as the franchise has openly acknowledged that they are entering a rebuilding phase.

Flores’s contract guarantees 5 years at the helm of the Dolphins, and they hope that he’ll be the man to reinvigorate a long-dormant franchise.

There are less and less NFL teams with coaching vacancies each day. After the Green Bay Packers zeroed in on Matt LaFleur, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, and Denver Broncos all followed and found their new head coaches in the last 48 hours. New York Jets, Cincinnati Bengals, and Miami Dolphins now remain the only teams in the league without an HC.

Buccaneers were the first one to find a new HC, agreeing to a four-year deal with Arians on Tuesday. Arians, who decided to retire as Cardinals’ coach after the 2017 season, spent the last year as an NFL analyst for CBS.  He will succeed Dirk Koetter, who was fired after three seasons in which he compiled 19-29 record.

“Bruce Arians is one of the NFL’s most well-respected coaches over the past two decades, and we are excited to have him leading our team,” – said Buccaneers owner Bryan Glazer in a statement. “Throughout this process, we focused on finding the right coach with a proven ability to elevate our players and lead our team forward. Bruce has played a large role in the development and career success of some of our league’s best players, and we look forward to seeing him continue that work here with our franchise.”

Cardinals, on the other hand, decided to turn to college football for their new head coach hiring Kliff Kingsbury to replace Steve Wilks. Kingsbury was fired as Texas Tech coach in November after he had three straight losing seasons.

Browns decided to stay in the house after interviewing several candidates and choose their interim offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens as the man who will lead the franchise in the future. Kitchens doesn’t have previous head coaching experience and was relatively unknown before taking over OC job in Week 9 of 2018 NFL season. The 44-year-old, who joined the franchise just a year ago as a running backs coach, is credited with getting most out of Browns’ offense in the eight games he called plays which was a big reason why the front office decided to give him this promotion.

Finally, Chicago Bears’ defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is getting the HC job with Broncos. Fangio doesn’t have the experience of being at the helm of an NFL team but has spent the last 33 years serving at various assistant positions. He is credited for turning the Bears’ defense, which was 30th in the NFL before he joined in 2014, into NFL’s No.1 defense in scoring and takeaways.
