The traditional kickoff to the NFL preseason will not take place this August, as the previously-scheduled Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio between the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers will be canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

This year’s matchup, which was set to be held on August 7th as part of the traditional Hall of Fame Weekend, is yet another cancellation in the long line of sporting events that have been interrupted by the ongoing pandemic.

Instead, reports are that both the Hall of Fame induction ceremony and the game itself will take place in summer 2021. Football fans will be deprived of the traditional kickoff to the football season, at least this year.

While the NFL has not announced any changes or modifications at the current time to the regular season, which is set to begin in early September, the news of the cancellation of the Hall of Fame Game is enough to begin to worry fans, coaches, owners, and the rest of the football world.

For the moment, however, teams are still expected to begin training camp in about a month in preparation for the season, which is set to open on September 10th in Kansas City.

Retired running back Herschel Walker already made it to College Football Hall of Fame, but it looks like that isn’t enough for the former Dallas Cowboys’ star. During his recent chat with Pioneer Press, Walker reiterated his belief that he belongs in Pro Football Hall of Fame as well.

Walker has been eligible for Hall of Fame honor since 2003, but he never received serious consideration. This is in part due to him making only two Pro Bowl appearances and failing to play for a championship team. Still, the 58-year-old believes his stats should make the difference.

“If you look at my stats, I should be in the Hall of Fame,” said Walker. “My stats showed that I produced.”

Herschel Walker played 12 seasons in the NFL with Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, and Philadelphia Eagles among other teams. During that time, he had 8,225 rushing yards and 61 touchdowns, 512 receptions for 4,859 receiving yards, and 21 yards alongside 5,084 returning yards. His 18,168 all-purpose yards currently rank 12th on the all-time list.

Prior to coming to NFL, Walker also played in United States Football League, where he rushed for 5,562 yards in three years. If all his rushing numbers as a pro were combined, he would rank fifth all-time.

“Let’s just forget about my USFL days,” he added. “Look at my stats in the NFL. Look at my combined yards. Plus, I had 500 some catches. Those stats are good enough to be in the Hall of Fame. That’s what people need to look at when they start talking about numbers and all that.”

While Walker might have a point when it comes to his production, there is a little chance that he will get to Pro Football Hall of Fame anytime soon. He is just not that decorated like some other players of his era and the competition is getting more fierce each year.

The 2020 Hall of Fame finalists has been announced highlighted by newcomers Troy Polamalu and Reggie Wayne. Five other NFL stars made their first appearance on the ballot, including former Rams wide receiver Torry Holt (1999-2008) and Packers safety LeRoy Butler (1990-2001), although all five have been eligible previously.

Newcomers have been the highlight of the past few Hall of Fame enshrinements, and this year looks no different. The Flyin’ Hawaiian (Polamalu), played 12 outstanding seasons with the Steelers and his long hair and great energy were a staple of the early 2000’s Steelers defense. Reggie Wayne was a star receiver for the Indianapolis Colts his whole career and he teamed up with WR Marvin Harrison and QB Peyton Manning to form one of the best passing games in football.

While these two seem like a sure bet to get voted into the Hall of Fame, there is great talent to be considered from returning candidates as well. Steelers guard Alan Faneca (5th ballot) and Rams receiver Isaac Bruce (4th ballot) highlight a list of great returning talent that haven’t been able to make it over the voting threshold yet.

Up to five finalists will be chosen on February 1st, the day before the Super Bowl. The Class of 2020 will be formally announced later that evening during the NFL Honors show.
