Bayern Munich won’t be on the market for a new manager after all. The Bundesliga side announced on Friday that interim manager Hansi Flick would take over the club on a permanent basis. Flick signed a contract that will keep him with Bayern through the 2022/23 season.

Flick was named Bayern’s interim manager in November after the German side decided to fire Niko Kovac. In December, following a series of good results, the club extended Flick’s tenure until the end of the season, and it proved to be a great decision.

During his time in charge, the 54-year-old won 18 out of 21 games and propelled Bayern back to the top of Bundesliga. He is also credited for stabilizing the locker room and instilling a healthy work atmosphere, which obviously didn’t go unnoticed by the front office.

“The club is very happy with Hansi Flick’s work,” said club’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in a statement. “The team has developed under his leadership, and we’re playing attractive football, which is reflected in the results.”

Since Kovac’s dismissal, Bayern Munich was linked with several high-profile managerial names. Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and ex-Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri were among the favorites for the job, but the club didn’t want to rush with the decision, which turned out to be a wise strategy.

On Wednesday night, one of the most exciting UEFA Champions League matches took place on Parc des Princes in Paris. It was a duel between one of the most successful soccer clubs in history Bayern Munich and one of the wealthiest, Paris Saint-Germain. PSG won the game 3-0 and showed that the team’s owners spent their money well. On the other hand, Bayern Munich didn’t only lose the game. They have also lost patience with their manager Carlo Ancelotti and announced on Thursday that they have decided to search for a new person to take over the team. Current assistant manager and former Bayern Munich player Willy Sagnol has been appointed as interim manager. Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann are targeted by the club to fill the vacated position, but Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp isn’t out of the picture.

The performance of our team since the start of the season did not meet the expectations we put to them,” – said Bayern’s chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, explaining the team’s decision. “I would like to thank Carlo for his cooperation. Carlo is my friend and will remain my friend, but we had to make a professional decision. The game in Paris clearly showed that we had to draw consequences.

Ancelotti didn’t make comments to the media about him being fired, but did went on Twitter and said that “it has been a great honour to form part of Bayern’s history” and thanked “the Players and it’s amazing fans.”

Carlo Ancelotti became Bayern Munich’s manager in 2016, replacing Pep Guardiola who went to Manchester City. Ancelotti came to the club with 3 UEFA Champions League titles and as a person who won domestic titles in 4 countries. He went on to win the Bundesliga in his first year with Bayern Munich alongside two DFL-Supercup titles. Still, the club didn’t play particularly well in UEFA Champions League being eliminated in the last year’s quarter-final.
