The New York Yankees seem to be delivering on their promises to make a run for the top players on the free-agent market this offseason. And they are starting with the shortstop position.

In a chat with reporters on Thursday, the Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman revealed that the team already had talks with the best available free agent shortstops. The list of names includes 2020 World Series MVP Corey Seager and All-Stars Trevor Story, and  Carlos Correa.

According to Cashman, the team is “casting a wide net and having conversations” that would lead to improving the team ahead of the 2022 MLB season.

“So, we’re going to have to come up with a better version than what we ended with. That’s the job,” Cashman said. “We’re trying to assess really what our realistic options are, and so time will tell how that plays out, but I have talked to all of them, yes.”

The New York Yankees are in a rough spot on shortstop ever since losing Didi Gregorius in free agency in 2019. The team tried to patch up the position with All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres, but the move didn’t pan out, and they dropped the experiment midway through the 2021 season.

The Yankees finished third in the AL East in 2021 but still managed to get to the playoffs thanks to a 92-70 record. They were handed an early postseason exit after losing 1-3 to the Boston Red Sox in the AL Wild Card game.

The New York Yankees didn’t hold the disappointing 2021 MLB campaign against manager Aaron Boone, rewarding him recently with a new long-term deal. But the same can’t be said for the team’s coaches.

The Yankees continued to overhaul Boone’s coaching staff this week, announcing that the first-base coach Reggie Willits won’t return for the 2022 MLB season. Willits, who also served as outfield instructor, is ending his four-season stint with the franchise to take a volunteer role with Oklahoma University’s college baseball program.

“I’ve cherished my time with the Yankees, and I’ve grown professionally and personally because of the bonds that have I’ve formed with so many players, coaches and staff,” said Willits in a statement shared with Sports Illustrated.

Before Willits, the Yankees also said goodbye to three other coaches on Boone’s staff. Third base coach Phil Nevin, hitting coach Marcus Thames and assistant hitting coach P.J. Pilittere all left the franchise after seeing their contract run out and failing to receive a new one.

The Yankees finished the regular part of the season 3rd in AL East but still managed to get through to the playoffs thanks to a 92-70 record. They then faced the Boston Red Sox in the AL Wild-Card game, where they suffered a humbling 2-6 loss that ended their postseason earlier than expected.

In a season full of trips to the injured list for the New York Yankees, yet another player is going to miss time after getting hurt.

Outfielder Clint Frazier, who was called up to replace Giancarlo Stanton, who is also currently injured, is heading to the injured list with a sprained ankle.

Frazier, one of the Yankees’ notable young talents, had filled in nicely for Stanton since being called up. He’s hit for a .324 average and 6 home runs since replacing Stanton in right field for New York.

The 24-year-old outfielder suffered the injury during Monday’s game against the Angels in Anaheim. He downplayed it as nothing serious in post-game interviews, but an MRI performed on Tuesday revealed the damage.

While the sprain is not overly serious, it will probably keep Frazier shelved for 2 or 3 weeks.

Even though catcher Gary Sánchez finally returned to the team after spending the first weeks of the season on the IL, the Yankees till now have 13 players on the list.

Despite their injury woes, the Yankees have gotten off to a solid start to the 2019 campaign. Their 14-10 record currently has them in second place in the AL East behind the surging Tampa Bay Rays.

The New York Yankees’ starting center fielder has agreed to a long-term contract extension with the team.

The Yankees and Aaron Hicks have agreed to a seven-year, $70 million dollar extension that runs through Hicks’ age 36 season.

Hicks, who was traded to the Yankees from the Minnesota Twins in the 2015-16 offseason, enjoyed the best season of his career while playing in the Bronx last season.

The switch-hitting center fielder hit .248 in 2018, but posted a .366 on-base percentage and hit 27 home runs while playing strong defense. This was good for nearly 5 wins over replacement according to the FanGraphs metric.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone, one of his biggest supporters, has referred to Hicks as being one of the most underrated players in the game of baseball.

Hicks is the third member of an all-world outfield which the Yankees enjoy, consisting of Hicks, Giancarlo Stanton, and Aaron Judge.

Boone has declared publicly that Hicks could be the Yankees’ best option to hit in the leadoff spot this season. In any case, the franchise’s decision to offer him this contract extension shows their commitment and belief in the talented outfielder.

New York Yankees announced on Tuesday that their pitcher Jordan Montgomery will have to undergo a Tommy John surgery (ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction) in order to repair an elbow injury. According to estimations, Montgomery should be back in action in late 2019.

The 25-year-old left-hander first experienced elbow tightness on May 1st, in the game against the Houston Astros. He was initially diagnosed with a strained elbow and was projected to return in eight weeks at most.

Jordan Montgomery was selected by the New York Yankees in the 2014 MLB Draft as the 122nd overall pick. After spending almost three years in the minors, he was promoted to the majors in April 2017, becoming a part of Yankees rotation. Montgomery ended up playing in 29 games in 2017, posting 9-7 with a 3.88 ERA. He started the 2018 season with 2-0 and a 3.26 ERA.

With Jordan Montgomery being out for the season, New York Yankees will look to add a pitcher to their roster before the trade deadline. Until they make a move on the market, Yankees will have to rely on Domingo German to fill Montgomery’s place in the rotation. The problem with this is that German has been inconsistent since being promoted to majors, and is still to collect a win in MLB.

New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia is looking to finish his professional career on a high end. Speaking with NY Post on Sunday, the 37-year-old left-hander said that he will retire after this season if Yankees go all the way and win the World Series.

I want one more parade and pretty sure that will be it,’‘ – said Sabathia. “I thought I had it last year.

CC Sabathia also told the Post that he would have retired last season if Yankees managed to win it all, but they ended up being defeated by Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series. Sabathia won his only World Series in 2009 during his first season with the Yankees. He is, alongside outfielder Brett Gardner and pitcher David Robertson, the only player still remaining on the 2018 roster from the 2009 championship generation.

CC Sabathia started his professional career with the Cleveland Indians, spending seven years with the organization and earning three All-Star appearances in the process. Indians traded Sabathia to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008, before the player decided to sign with the Yankees in 2009. He made an immediate impact on the team, helping them win the World Series and being named ALCS MVP in his first season. Since then the Yankees didn’t manage to reach the World Series.

On December 26, 2017, Sabathia signed a one-year, $10 million contract and expressed his desire to bring another championship in New York.

I feel like this is a young team, and we will turn this into something great,” – said Sabathia at the time. “This is my home, and I want to see this thing through.

New York Yankees have claimed outfielder Trayce Thompson, brother of Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson, off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Thompson has been designated for assignment by the Dodgers a week ago.

He’s a guy who needs to go out there and play,” – said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts last week. “When he had his success here it was a two-month spurt when he got to play a lot, on a nightly basis, and we just didn’t see that for him right now. He did a lot of good things for us. … We obviously wish Trayce all the best.

New York Yankees have turned to Trayce Thompson after several of their starters in the outfield suffered injuries at the beginning of the season. They recently lost relief pitcher Ben Heller as well, being forced to transfer him to the 60-day disabled list.

Trayce Thompson entered the 2009 MLB Draft out of high school, where Chicago White Sox selected him in the second round. After playing over 150 games in the minors, the White Sox promoted him to the majors in August 2015 and traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers shortly after.

In the 2016 season, Thompson played the best baseball in his career, had 13 home runs, and 32 RBIs in 80 games with .225 batting average. Still, he didn’t manage to transfer that to 2017, where he had .122 batting average and appeared in 27 games.

Veteran pitcher CC Sabathia has agreed to return to the New York Yankees after his contract expired. He will sign a one year, $10 million deal with the team after he passes a physical, according to the MLB.com report. The figure is a sizable discount compared to the last five seasons when he earned $25 million per year. According to his agent Kyle Thousand, Sabathia returns to the Yankees because he has some “unfinished business” there.

CC feels there’s unfinished business to attend to,“- said Thousand to MLB. “There were competitive offers that CC was weighing, but in the end, CC wanted to come back and win a championship with the Yankees. He loves his teammates, the clubhouse and the moves the Yankees are making. He wants to bring home another championship to the Yankee fans.”

The 37-year-old met with other teams in recent weeks, including the Los Angeles Angels and the Toronto Blue Jays, but it looks like he wasn’t keen on leaving New York. After the loss in Game 7 of the American League championship, Sabathia confirmed he wants to stay with the Yankees.

I feel like this is a young team, and we will turn this into something great,” – he said. “This is my home, and I want to see this thing through.

After being drafted 20th overall in the 1998 MLB draft by the Cleveland Indians, Sabathia waited until 2011 to make his majors debut. He was the youngest player in the MLB at the time but finished second in the AL voting for Rookie of the Year. During his time with the Indians, Sabathia had three All-Star appearances before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008. The following year he signed with the Yankees, with whom he won his first championship ring in 2009. During his career, Sabathia managed 237–146 record alongside 3.70 ERA.
