The New York Jets are forced to make another quarterback shuffle this season. The team just announced that Mike White, who was the Jets’ starter in the last three games, will miss the upcoming game against the red-hot Detroit Lions due to a rib injury. He will be replaced with second-year signal caller Zach Wilson, who was the team’s third-string QB just a week ago.

White got hurt in a 12-20 loss against the Buffalo Bills last Sunday, with tests showing he has fractured ribs. The 27-year-old player initially planned to play through the injury but wasn’t cleared for contact in time for that to be an option.

“It’s gotten to the point where we could drag this out to Sunday, but this is one of those deals we have to do what’s best for the player and protect the player from the player,” said the Jets’ head coach Robert Saleh.

The New York Jets will now roll with Wilson, who is having one of the more eventful seasons for a QB in recent memory. The last year’s second-overall pick missed the first three games of the season due to an injury but was considered the undisputed starter upon his return in Week 4.

However, a string of bad performances, including just nine completed passes in a 3-10 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 11, caused Wilson to lose his job. The 23-year-old player then spent the last three weeks as a third-string quarterback making a rapid rise on the depth chart following White’s injury.

In seven starts this season, Wilson completed 55.6% of his passes, throwing for 1,279 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions.

The New York Jets are mixing it up at the quarterback position once again. According to the team’s head coach Robert Saleh, veteran Joe Flacco will start under center for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins. This will mark the third different starter for the Jets in 2021.

The Jets opened the season with rookie Zach Wilson handling the starting duties. The 2021’s second overall pick got hurt in Week 7, which allowed fourth-year player Mike White to take over. White impressed on several occasions, most notably in 34-31 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, but had an ugly outing last week that saw him throw four picks in a 17-45 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

During a chat with reporters on Wednesday, Saleh insisted that White isn’t being demoted due to poor performance against the Bills. Instead, he believes that Flacco’s experience will give the Jets a better chance against the blitz-heavy Dolphins defense.

“Joe’s got a history,” Saleh said via. “He’s in the record books all over the place. He’s a world champion, so he’s got a history of playing good ball. One drive didn’t solidify anything; it’s his history more than anything. He’s seen these type of defenses many times over.”

Flacco joined the Jets in late October, arriving in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. He saw his first action in 2021 against the Bills, stepping up in the fourth quarter and completing all three passes he attempted while throwing for 47 yards and a touchdown.

Speaking about his chance to start a game again for the first time in almost a year, Flacco said that he wants to prove that he still belongs in this league.

“When you’re a backup, and you get traded, all kinds of things run through your head,” he added. “You want to play. Not only that, but you want to prove again to yourself that you can play. A lot of emotions come up.”

New York Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson is expected to miss time due to sprained PCL in his right knee. Wilson was hurt in a 54-13 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday.

The 2021 second overall pick suffered the injury after being tackled by the Pats’ Matt Judon early in the second quarter. He left the game after the play and did not return.

“I think my toe kind of just got stuck in the ground, and Judon just kind of fell on it with all of his weight, and that kind of twisted it. Felt a pop there,” said Wilson after the game.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Wilson had an MRI on his knee on Sunday night, and the test revealed the PCL sprain. The Jets are reportedly confident the BYU product will play again in 2021 and expect him back in two to four weeks.

Zach Wilson has had a rough first season in the NFL, struggling with turnovers and inconsistency. He is currently completing just 57.5 of his passes while throwing for 1,168 yards, four touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

Wilson’s injury had put the Jets in a tough spot as they entered the season without a veteran QB on their roster. Backup Mike White, the fifth-round selection in 2018, stepped in for Wilson against New England and finished the contest with 20 completed passes out of 32 attempts while throwing for a touchdown and being picked twice. This was the first game action for White since he entered the league.

Sam Darnold doesn’t seem to be a franchise quarterback in the eyes of the New York Jets. In a chat with reporters on Wednesday, Jets general manager Joe Douglas admitted that the team is willing to listen to offers for their No. 3 pick in 2018.

Douglas said that he still believes that Darnold has a future in the league but would take a call if a team is interested in him.

“As it pertains to Sam, we think Sam is a dynamic player in this league with unbelievable talent,” said Douglas. “He really has a chance to hit his outstanding potential moving forward. [But] if calls are made, I will answer them.”

Douglas being uncommitted to Darnold results from multiple options that the Jets have to address the position this offseason.

They own the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft, which they can use to take another young signal-caller like BYU’s Zach Wilson or Ohio State’s Justin Fields. Another way to go is to package the pick with other assets to pursue a proven quarterback like disgruntled Houston Texans star Deshaun Watson.

There’s also a scenario where the Jets keep Sam Darnold and give him another year to prove himself, but this seems highly unlikely.

In his three years as a starter, Darnold failed to show that he can be a long-term solution for the Jets at the position. He compiled a 13-25 record while completing just 59.8 percent of his passes for 8,097 yards. The 23-year-old player also has 39 picks compared to 45 touchdowns.

“He just needs to keep playing,” said Gase. “He needs to keep playing and keep fixing the mistakes that are made and really emphasize the things he’s doing really well, and just keep building on those.”

Gase was asked about the possibility of benching Darnold but quickly brushed off the idea.

“That’s always a tough decision because he’s 23 years old and he’s in his third year,” he added. “Every snap he takes in a real game, they’re so valuable. They’re learning experiences. You have to go through tough situations sometimes.“

One of the reasons why Gase is hesitant to move on from Darnold might be the fact that he doesn’t have much behind him. Veteran Joe Flacco is still recovering from neck surgery while the current backup Mike White is yet to play a single snap in an official NFL game.

New York Jets are moving on from quarterback Christian Hackenberg, having traded the 23-year-old to the Oakland Raiders. In return, Raiders will send a conditional seventh-round pick. This trade will mark Hackenberg’s disappointing stint with the Jets, during which he failed to make a single regular season appearance for the team in two years.

This trade comes shortly after Hackenberg criticized the Jets organization for not helping him with his throwing motion.

“There were sometimes when I threw it really good during my first two years here,” – Hackenberg told reporters on the first day of Jets’ OTA. “That was the frustrating part for me, the ups and downs and not knowing why — does that make sense? — and not really getting any information from anybody on how to fix that and how to address it.“

Still, according to coach Todd Bowles, player’s comments didn’t prompt the trade but the team’s decision to keep just three QBs.

“We had one too many (quarterbacks) to get all of them reps,” – said Bowles. “We just want to go with the three quarterbacks we have and let these guys battle it out.“

According to the Colts general manager Chris Ballard, two teams have been discussing the trade for “four or five days” before finally closing the deal.

“They had an interest to move up to (No.) 3 and kind of went back and forth for the last four or five days,” – said Ballard while speaking to Colts’ website. “Talked to a couple other teams, but we still wanted to stay in position in that top 10 where we could still get a premium player.
