New York Jets are moving on from quarterback Christian Hackenberg, having traded the 23-year-old to the Oakland Raiders. In return, Raiders will send a conditional seventh-round pick. This trade will mark Hackenberg’s disappointing stint with the Jets, during which he failed to make a single regular season appearance for the team in two years.

This trade comes shortly after Hackenberg criticized the Jets organization for not helping him with his throwing motion.

There were sometimes when I threw it really good during my first two years here,” – Hackenberg told reporters on the first day of Jets’ OTA. “That was the frustrating part for me, the ups and downs and not knowing why — does that make sense? — and not really getting any information from anybody on how to fix that and how to address it.

Still, according to coach Todd Bowles, player’s comments didn’t prompt the trade but the team’s decision to keep just three QBs.

We had one too many (quarterbacks) to get all of them reps,” – said Bowles. “We just want to go with the three quarterbacks we have and let these guys battle it out.

Christian Hackenberg was drafted by the New York Jets as a 51st overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Despite being a high draft pick, Hackenberg played just in six preseason games during the two season with the team. Jets intended to develop Hackenberg and make him their starter at some point, but things didn’t turn out the way they wanted. The team decided to trade up in 2018 NFL draft and take USC’s QB Sam Darnold with the third overall pick, moving on from Hackenberg, who didn’t fit into their long-term plans.

New York Jets moved up in the upcoming 2018 NFL draft, acquiring the third overall pick from the Indianapolis Colts in a blockbuster trade on Saturday. The Jets gave up their sixth overall pick and two second-round picks (No. 37 and No. 49) in this year’s draft alongside second-rounder in 2019. It is expected that the Jets will use the third overall pick to draft a potential franchise quarterback.

According to the Colts general manager Chris Ballard, two teams have been discussing the trade for “four or five days” before finally closing the deal.

They had an interest to move up to (No.) 3 and kind of went back and forth for the last four or five days,” – said Ballard while speaking to Colts’ website. “Talked to a couple other teams, but we still wanted to stay in position in that top 10 where we could still get a premium player. We feel like at (No.) 6, we’ll still be able to get a premium player.

The New York Jets have been searching for a franchise quarterback for some time now and tried to land former Redskins QB Kirk Cousins in the free agency. After Cousins decided to sign with the Minnesota Vikings, the Jets resigned Josh McCown and got Teddy Bridgewater. Still, the team doesn’t look at the McCown and Bridgewater as longtime solutions and have their minds set on one of the top prospect QBs in the upcoming draft. According to the reports, the Jets will use the third overall pick to take Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, UCLA’s Josh Rosen, Wyoming’s Josh Allen, or Southern California’s Sam Darnold.

The last time that the Jets traded up in the draft was in 2009 when they acquired the fifth overall pick and drafted QB Mark Sanchez.
