New York Giants decided to move on from running back Paul Perkins. Giants announced on Thursday that they have waived Perkins after the player suffered a non-football pectoral injury. Perkins was Week 1 starting running back for the Giants in 2017 season.

New York Giants won’t feel Perkins’ absence too much since the team drafted Penn State’s running back Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Besides Barkley, the Giants also have Wayne Gallman and Jonathan Stewart as RBs on their roster.

According to ESPN’s reports, Paul Perkins suffered the injury prior to the start of the Giants’ offseason workout program and decided to undergo a surgery. These types of injuries take around six months to fully heal, so it may be unlikely for Perkins to play again in 2018.
Paul Perkins entered the NFL in 2016 when he was selected by the Giants with the 149th overall pick in that year’s NFL Draft. Although he was team’s fourth running back on the depth chart starting the 2016 season, Perkins managed to get more playing time and ended the regular season with 112 carries for 456 yards and added 15 receptions for 162 yards.

Before the start of 2017 regular season, Giants’ coach Ben McAdoo named Perkins the team’s starting running back. Perkins, however, didn’t have plenty to show, playing in 11 games and having 41 carries for 90 yards.

New York Giants announced that they have released wide receiver Brandon Marshall. The news was confirmed by the team’s general manager Dave Gettleman, who said that the decision was made after the 34-year-old failed his physical.

Brandon Marshall joined the New York Giants in 2017 offseason, signing a two-year, $12 million contract with the team. He was featured in five games in the regular season, managing 18 receptions for 154 yards, before suffering an ankle injury. He was ruled out for the season after a surgery. Releasing Marshall will see Giants saving $5.1 million in the salary cap.

Reporters asked Dave Gettleman will the release of Marshall mean that the Giants will pursue former Dallas Cowboys star WR Dez Bryant, who expressed a desire to come to New York and play alongside Odell Beckham Jr.

We are interested in everybody.” – responded Gettleman.

New York Giants also released tackle Jessamen Dunker, who spent his rookie 2017 season on injured reserve after suffering a foot injury during the training camp.

Brandon Marshall, who got drafted in the NFL by Denver Broncos in 2006, also played for Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears, and the New York Jets. During the 12 years he spent in the league, Marshall had six Pro-Bowl appearances and received First-team All-Pro honors in 2012.He was also NFL receiving touchdowns co-leader in 2015 and named Second-team All-Pro in the same year. After the 2015 season, Marshall became the only player in the history of the league to have six seasons in which he had more than 100 receptions. Still, he doesn’t mean to stop there and recently said that he has at least two good years left to play.

I’m all-in on football,” – said Marshall towards the end of 2017 season. “I’ve rebuilt my body. I think I’m two great years away from, and I’ll say it, I want to be a Hall of Famer and I think I got two great years to go to be mentioned with some of the greats.”

After firing Jerry Reese at the beginning of the month, the New York Giants decided former Carolina Panthers’ man Dave Gettleman as their new general manager. The hiring of Gettleman was confirmed by Giants’ president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch, who issued a joint statement.

Given where we are as a team, we thought it was important to bring in someone with experience as a General Manager and a proven track record.” – said the statement. “Dave’s experience is unparalleled. He did an outstanding job as general manager in Carolina, and he was vital to our success during his tenure here. Dave is going to bring his own approach to our organization in how we draft and acquire players through free agency.

The 66-year-old Gettleman was considered a longtime favorite for the position, especially due to his ties with the organization, something that the Giants considered very important. He served as a scout in 1998, then as pro personnel director from 1999 to 2011, before assuming the role of senior pro personnel analyst in 2012. He was also the GM of the Panthers from 2013 to July 2017.

According to the sources close to the team, the Giants also interviewed assistant general manager Kevin Abrams, vice president of player evaluation Marc Ross and ESPN analyst Louis Riddick for the GM position, before settling on Gettleman.

New Giants GM already had his first news conference and said that he intends to keep both quarterback Eli Manning and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. on the team. Besides making the decisions on the status of team’s two biggest stars, Gettleman will have to do much more if he intends to assert Giants as the winning side once more. Although his opinion will be valued when it comes to the man who will replace Ben McAdoo as the head coach, Mara earlier said that he and Tisch will have a final saying in the matter.
