The two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Eli Manning finally decided to shed some light on his infamous decision to refuse to play for the Chargers despite being drafted by the franchise with the first overall pick in 2004.

During his appearance on the 10 Questions with Kyle Brand podcast earlier this week, Manning revealed that he had reservations about the Chargers organization, then located in San Diego, and believed they wouldn’t be a great place for a young QB.

“It was my decision having talked with my agent, coaches, [general managers] and owners,” Manning said. “Going through the draft process, I was just worried about the Chargers organization at the time. I felt it was the right decision, and I had a little pull. I quietly tried to say ‘Hey, please don’t draft me, it can be our secret,’ and they didn’t keep the secret part very well.”

After successful four seasons of college football with Ole Miss, Eli Manning entered the 2004 NFL Draft and was immediately the favorite to be first on the board. But Manning actively tried to avoid this honor as it would mean he would play for the Chargers. He even openly told the franchise not to draft him and was reportedly ready to sit out an entire season if that happens.

The Chargers had a bad rep at the time, having first failed to develop Ryan Leaf, who was taken second in the 1998 draft, and then almost ruining the career of Drew Brees.

The Chargers drafted Manning regardless but ended up trading him to the New York Giants in exchange for Phillip Rivers (selected three spots behind Manning) and picks. The rest is history, as Manning won two Super Bowls and was named Super Bowl MVP in both, while Chargers got a Hall of Fame quarterback in Rivers but never managed to go all the way.

Former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning still isn’t sure what he wants to do now that he’s retired from professional football. But he knows that he doesn’t want to coach in the NFL.

Manning announced his retirement at the end of 2019 season, walking away from football after he 16 seasons with the Giants. The 39-year-old then took a year off and is now in the process of figuring his next move.

“I really wanted to try to take a year off and just try to gather my bearings and get settled with my family and figure out what I want to do in that next chapter,” said Manning during a recent conference call.

Manning’s next job won’t be on the NFL’s sidelines, however, as he doesn’t want to be an NFL coach.

“I know one thing: I don’t want to be an NFL coach. I’ve seen what our coaches do and the hours they put in, and I enjoy being with my family and enjoy coaching some of their sports teams,” he added.

Despite this, Manning hopes to stay involved in football in some capacity. This might include a position in the Giants’ front office, broadcasting, or “some coaching with a high school team.”

Eli Manning spent his entire career with New York Giants, delivering two Super Bowls to the franchise, including a win against undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. He is also four-times Pro Bowler and Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award winner.

Despite his success with the Giants, the end of Manning’s career was rather unceremonious. He was benched in Week 3 of the 2019 NFL season for rookie Daniel Jones and spent the majority of the year as a backup. Losing the starter spot reportedly prompted him to make the retirement decision.

It looks like New York Giants will have to turn to Eli Manning once again to finish the season. According to NFL Network, Giants’ starting quarterback Daniel Jones will be forced to sit out two to four weeks with a high-ankle sprain. This means that the rookie will most likely miss the remainder of the season.

With Jones out, Manning reclaimed the starting position he lost in Week 3. This will be a chance for the two times Super Bowl MVP to say a proper goodbye to fans before a likely retirement at the end of the season.

Manning was a starter at the beginning of 2019, but he had two bad performances, in which he threw for 556 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, causing him to lose his job to Daniel Jones. Giants selected Jones sixth overall in the most recent NFL draft, and decided he will give them a better chance of competing this season.

Jones had his own ups and downs, managing to complete 61.6 percent of his passes for 2,374 and 18 TDs. Giants were 2-8 with Jones as their QB.

Giants play Miami Dolphins at home in Week 15, before facing Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles to finish off the season.

Eli Manning’s run as a starting quarterback of New York Giants has come to an end. Giants’ head coach Pat Shurmur announced on Tuesday that Manning will be benched for Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with rookie Daniel Jones taking over as a starter.

Manning hasn’t been on his usual level for the past several years, which is why the Giants drafted Jones with the 6th overall pick in this year’s draft. The initial idea was to let Jones sit for a year (or maybe two) behind Manning and then take over.

However, it seems like Jones’ stellar showing in the preseason and Manning’s struggles in Week 1 and 2 have made the Giants pull the trigger much sooner than expected.

“Eli and I spoke this morning,” – said Shurmur in a statement. “I told him that we are making a change and going with Daniel as the starter. I also talked to Daniel.”

“Eli was obviously disappointed, as you would expect, but he said he would be what he has always been, a good teammate, and continue to prepare to help this team win games. Daniel understands the challenge at hand, and he will be ready to play on Sunday.” – he added.

Eli Manning became starting quarterback for the New York Giants midway through his rookie season in 2004 and has made franchise record of 232 starts since then. During his time at the helm of the Giants’ offense, Manning won two Super Bowls and two Super Bowl MVP awards while getting ahold of every important franchise record for a QB and several NFL record.

Despite his past successes, Manning has been mediocre at best in recent years, failing to lead the team to playoffs since 2016. In the two games he played this season, he threw for 556 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions while Giants went 0-2.

It is safe to say that in the previous two seasons, New York Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning hasn’t played on his usual level.  His production was inconsistent while Giants missed the playoffs in both years while managing to win just eight games in total during this period.

This caused many analysts and Giants’ fans to become vocal in their opinion that Manning should retire and that it’s time for a younger quarterback to take over. But the 38-year-old two-times Super Bowl MVP isn’t exactly sharing their opinion as he still enjoys playing the game.

“You take it year by year,” – Manning told nola.com’s Rod. “I’ve been blessed going into my 16th year. That’s been a blessing in itself. I love what I’m doing. I love the work that goes into it. You never know when it’s going to be your last year or when it’s going to be the end for you, so you try to take advantage of the years you’re here and enjoy every moment.”

Giants are already preparing for the life after Eli Manning, as they drafted Duke’s Daniel Jones sixth overall in this year’s draft to be his successor. But despite having a youngster waiting to take his spot, Manning isn’t planning to “rush into retirement.”

“I’m not rushing into retirement, and Peyton’s not telling me to rush into it,” – he added. “I still love being around the guys and the teammates and playing this game. I’m going to play it for as long as I think I can hang with these guys.”

Despite the criticism, Manning has actually had a statistically pretty good season in 2018. He completed career-high 66.0 percent of his passes while throwing for 4,299 yards, which was most since his last Pro Bowl year in 2015.

New York Giants didn’t have the best 2018 season, finishing the year with a 5-11 record. Most of the blame for the team’s bad performances was aimed towards Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning, and many began questioning whether he should remain a starter. Now it seems like New York’s front office and coaching staff might share the same doubts.

Giants’ general manager Dave Gettleman was recently asked whether Manning will remain the team’s starting quarterback for 2019 and the answer he gave was not too reassuring.

“I’m committed to making the best decision in the interest of the Giants,” – said Gettleman. “We’re in the evaluation process. … Everything is on the table for us.”

He also added that he and Eli Manning had “extensive, no-holds barred” conversation about the 2018 season and the future of the team.

“We’re trying to build sustained success,”- he continued. “That takes brutal honesty and some tough decisions. … It wasn’t like he was called to the principal’s office. He came to see me.”

Eli Manning, who spent all of his 15th seasons as a pro with the Giants, has just one more year left on his deal. He recently confirmed that the discussions about the extension have not yet begun, which led to speculations that New York might move on from the 37-year-old.

In 2018, Manning completed 66.0 percent of his passes for 4,299 yards and 21 touchdowns while adding 11 interceptions.

New York Giants saw their offense take a big slip last year when they lost their star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. in Week 5 due to an ankle injury. While there are is no definite timeline for Beckham’s full recovery, it looks like the 25-year-old is on the right track if we are to believe Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning.

Manning spoke with the reporters on Wednesday during a football camp at Kean University and said that Odell Beckham Jr. “seemed to be his old self” during workouts in June.

Odell looked healthy,” – said Manning according to ESPN‘s Jordan Raanan. “He was running routes full speed, making cuts and seemed to be his old self. So I’m excited about that and that he can go out there and run all the routes.”

Manning also added that he thinks Beckham will “have a big year” in 2018.

So, excited to get him back going once training camp hits up. And getting on the same page, there are always new routes and new tweaks to the offense. But I know he’s been working hard and is going to have a big year.” – he added.

The first-round pick in 2014 NFL Draft, Odell Beckham Jr. is already on his way to becoming one of the NFL’s greats. In 2016, he became the fastest player to reach 200 career receptions and 4,000 career receiving yards. Beckham also has three Pro-Bowl appearances and was named to Second-team All-Pro twice.
