The New York Giants hoped the 2021 NFL season would finally be the one in which they return to playoffs. But as it turns out, this season had nothing but disappointments in store for both the team and the Giants fans.

Coach Joe Judge isn’t shying away from the fact that his team is playing bad football and believes he knows who’s responsible for the 1-5 start of the campaign.

“I’m the head coach. It’s my responsibility, point blank,” Judge said during a chat with reporters on Thursday. “Every player on this field, every position group, the execution, it all comes down to me. The fish stinks from the head down.”

Still, Judge said that he is feeling no pressure for having another bad start of the season and compiling a 7-15 record since taking over the Giants. The 39-year-old believes his team will turn things around and that better times for the franchise are around the corner.

“I can assure everyone out there that’s a Giants fan and they want to know when it’s going to turn, I can tell them right now we’re working tirelessly to make sure we get this thing turned around in the right direction, not just for short-term results, but for long-term success,” he added.

While it’s great that Judge remains optimistic, it is still hard to see the Giants getting any better anytime soon. They not only have a tough schedule that will see them play teams with a winning record in their next four games but are also significantly banged up and will be without several of their key players in the coming weeks.

Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur getting the New York Giants head coaching job was one of the worst-kept secrets in the NFL in the past week. Still, the official confirmation came only after the Vikings were eliminated in the NFC championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants introduced Shurmur as their next head coach, 18th in the franchise history, on Monday. According to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, Shurmur signed a five-year deal.

I want to thank [co-owners] John Mara and Steve Tisch for giving me the opportunity to be the head coach of the New York Giants,” – said Shurmur after the hiring became official. “I am looking forward to getting to work with [general manager] Dave Gettleman and [assistant GM] Kevin Abrams and starting the process to once again build a championship team. I have been fortunate to work with many great coaches and players, and I am thankful for those relationships. I would like to thank my family and friends for their tremendous support.

According to reports, Shurmur was one of the six candidates the Giants interviews. Among others were New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia and Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. The Giants had their eyes set on Patricia, but he decided to go with the Detroit Lions offer. After that, the team went all in on Shurmur who also interviewed with Arizona Cardinals and Chicago Bears.

I can’t wait to start working with Pat,” – said Giants’ GM Dave Gettleman in a statement. “I know he will provide the type of leadership we need to take our team back to where it belongs. I have followed Pat’s career for many years, and he has had great success wherever he has been. What struck me during our conversation is that being the head coach of the New York Giants is not too big for him. He is made for this moment and this opportunity.

This won’t be Pat Shurmur’s first head coaching job since he previously served as coach of Cleveland Browns, with whom he compiled 9-23 record during two seasons.

After firing Jerry Reese at the beginning of the month, the New York Giants decided former Carolina Panthers’ man Dave Gettleman as their new general manager. The hiring of Gettleman was confirmed by Giants’ president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch, who issued a joint statement.

Given where we are as a team, we thought it was important to bring in someone with experience as a General Manager and a proven track record.” – said the statement. “Dave’s experience is unparalleled. He did an outstanding job as general manager in Carolina, and he was vital to our success during his tenure here. Dave is going to bring his own approach to our organization in how we draft and acquire players through free agency.

The 66-year-old Gettleman was considered a longtime favorite for the position, especially due to his ties with the organization, something that the Giants considered very important. He served as a scout in 1998, then as pro personnel director from 1999 to 2011, before assuming the role of senior pro personnel analyst in 2012. He was also the GM of the Panthers from 2013 to July 2017.

According to the sources close to the team, the Giants also interviewed assistant general manager Kevin Abrams, vice president of player evaluation Marc Ross and ESPN analyst Louis Riddick for the GM position, before settling on Gettleman.

New Giants GM already had his first news conference and said that he intends to keep both quarterback Eli Manning and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. on the team. Besides making the decisions on the status of team’s two biggest stars, Gettleman will have to do much more if he intends to assert Giants as the winning side once more. Although his opinion will be valued when it comes to the man who will replace Ben McAdoo as the head coach, Mara earlier said that he and Tisch will have a final saying in the matter.

The New York Giants have fired their head coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese on Monday. This was confirmed by the team’s president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch at a press conference. McAdoo’s and Reese’s dismissal comes after 24-17 loss to the Raiders, which brought the Giants to a 2-10 record this season.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was named the interim coach, while assistant general manager Kevin Abrams will take the GM duties.

Steve and I spoke after yesterday’s game in Oakland and agreed to talk again today,” – said Mara. “This morning, we decided in the best interest of the franchise that we would relieve Jerry and Ben of their duties, effective immediately. This season has been incredibly disappointing for the organization and our fans, and while it would be ideal to make these kinds of decisions at the conclusion of the season, we simply felt now is the time to prepare for a fresh start.

The New York Giants were predicted to have an outstanding 2017 NFL season, with some even seeing them as a Super Bowl team. However, they have lost their first five games and then lost several valuable players due to injuries which made the team perform even worse. Now the Giants have NFL’s second-worst record (tied with San Francisco 49ers) and are ranked 31st in points scored.

Ben McAdoo worked as an assistant coach for various college and NFL teams before joining the New York Giants as an offensive coordinator in 2014. He was named the team’s head coach in January 2016 and led the team to 11–5 record. With McAdoo, the Giants returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2011 but were stopped by the Green Bay Packers in the first round. He gained media attention in the last week for benching the starting quarterback Eli Manning.
