The New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave is expected to play in Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions, sources revealed early Sunday. Olave suffered a concussion during the Saints’ 24-15 loss to the Atlanta Falcons last weekend.

Officially listed as questionable, Olave had limited participation in the Saints’ team practices on Wednesday and Thursday before having full participation in Friday’s practice session.

The wide receiver went down injured in the third quarter of the Falcons clash, falling hard after leaping in an attempt to make a high catch on the Saints’ sideline. After it became apparent that the player couldn’t rise to his feet after his fall, the Saints’ trainers made their way onto the field to assist him. He was escorted to the medical tent for further evaluations and then the locker room; not returning for the remainder of the match.

Until leaving the field, Olave made seven catches for 114 yards against the Falcons. For the season to date, Olave is leading his team with three receiving touchdowns and has made 63 catches for 771 yards.

The New Orleans Saints had big hopes for the 2023 season after managing to sign four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Carr in free agency. But throughout the first seven weeks Carr hasn’t galvanized the Saints’ offense in the way everyone expected.

Carr has thrown for solid 1,600 yards in seven games, but the Saints only managed to account for six passing touchdowns with him under center. According to head coach Dennis Allen, one of the reasons for this is that the veteran quarterback and the team’s wide receivers are still not on the “same page.”

“That is probably one of the things that I’m most frustrated about, is just that’s part of that inconsistency,” Allen said while speaking with reporters following a 24-31 loss to Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night. “Somehow, some way, we have to get those guys on the same page. There’s a lot that goes into that.”

Allen mentioned some examples from the Jags game, including a play on which Carr threw away the ball and was yelling at wideout Chris Olave afterward.

“Derek thought there was a good chance to get a one-on-one shot with him on the outside lanes … and Chris didn’t run that route the way it needs to be run,” Allen said about the play. “So that’s what happened. We ended up having a throwaway there.”

The Saints will now have a mini-bye to try and get their quarterback and wideouts on the same page. They play the Indianapolis Colts in Week 8.

Zion Williamson signed a five-year, $193 million designated maximum rookie extension with the New Orleans Pelicans, CAA Sports co-head of basketball Austin Brown reported. This deal could earn Williamson as much as $231 million. The earning potential of the Pelicans’ star will be determined by whether or not he wins the MVP or Defensive Player of the Year awards next season, as well as his inclusion in the All-NBA team.

The overall number one pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, Williamson averaged 22.5 points per game and shot 58.3% overall in his rookie season. These impressive stats saw him named only the second rookie in NBA history to average more than 20 points a game while shooting at least 55% in his inaugural season. Widely viewed as a generational talent, Williamson was ruled out of action for the entirety of the 2021-22 season due to a broken right foot.

In May, Williamson was cleared for action by the Pelicans and has since been joining the rest of the team for training without restrictions. Joined by CJ McCollum and Brandon Ingram, the youngster looks poised to help the Pelicans challenge for the Western Conference this season. The Pelicans ended last season in 11th position, narrowly missing out on a play-in berth.

The bad news keeps on coming in for the New Orleans Saints. After losing their starting quarterback Jameis Winston to an ACL injury on Sunday, the Saints now found out that they will also be without their star wideout Michael Thomas for the remainder of 2021.

Thomas confirmed the news on Wednesday via a statement posted on his Twitter profile. In the post, the 28-year-old revealed that he experienced “another small setback” while rehabbing his surgically repaired ankle.

“To my displeasure, I will not be able to make it back in time for this season but will do everything in my power to get back to the player I have always been,” Thomas added in a statement that was later retweeted by the official Saints’ Twitter account.

Michael Thomas injured his left ankle in the 2020 season opener, and the issue ended up limiting him to just seven games. Thomas then elected to have surgery on the ankle during the offseason, although his decision to postpone it until the summer didn’t sit well with the Saints. He started the 2021 campaign on a physically unable to perform list and targeted Week 7 return to the field before the most recent setback.

Thomas has been one of the best wide receivers in the game since being drafted by the Saints in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He made 510 career catches for 5,950 yards and 32 touchdowns in his first five years in the league.

The New Orleans Saints kicked off their post-Drew Brees era better than anyone could expect. Led by new starting quarterback Jameis Winston, the Saints trashed their NFC rivals, the Green Bay Packers, on Sunday and claimed a dominant 38-3 win.

The Saints’ win was even more impressive considering they had to welcome the Packers on Jacksonville’s TIAA Bank Field due to Hurricane Ida. The team was also forced to spend the last two weeks away from New Orleans, practicing at the Dallas Cowboy’s AT&T Stadium and the facilities of Texas Christian University.

Winston was a standout performer for the Saints, taking care of the football while throwing for 148 yards and five touchdowns.

Winston also had huge help from his defense, which continuously pressured the Packers and stopped them from developing any kind of offensive game.

As a result, Green Bay superstar QB Aaron Rodgers had one of his worst games in recent memory. Rodgers managed to complete just 53.6 percent of his passes while also throwing two interceptions. His first interception came in the red zone, preventing the Packers from putting points on the board and get back into the game. The second interception was returned all the way to Green Bay’s 12-yard line, setting up an easy TD for Winston.

Towards the end of the game, the Packers took Rodgers out and sent second-year signal-caller Jordan Love on the field. Love also failed to spark Green Bay’s offense, fumbling the ball in the red zone with 1:06 left on the clock.

“That was for the city,” Winston said in a post-game conference. “We did that for them. We knew how much it would mean to get a great victory for that region. They’ve been through so much.”

The New Orleans Saints travel to Carolina next week to face the Panthers. The Green Bay Packers, on the other hand, host the Detroit Lions in Week 2.

The New Orleans Saints are expected to be without their No. 1 wideout Michael Thomas at the start of the 2021 NFL campaign. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Saints will place Thomas on the physically unable to perform list, which causes the player to be ineligible for the first six weeks of the regular season.

As Schefter points out, Thomas only has to miss five games before returning as the Saints have an early bye week. The 28-year-old star is currently recovering from ankle surgery.

Thomas is expected to be at the Saints’ disposal as soon as he’s eligible, as head coach Sean Payton told reporters that the Pro Bowler is recovering faster than expected. Until then, New Orleans is expected to lean on their 2018 third-round pick Tre’Quan Smith and sophomore wideout Marquez Callaway.

After missing only one game in his first four years in the league, Michael Thomas missed a total of nine games in 2020. He suffered a high ankle sprain in the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and didn’t return until Week 9. The injury continued to bother Thomas throughout the season, and he had one more stint on the injured reserves later on. He finished the campaign with 40 catches for 438 yards and zero touchdowns.

In order to deal with the lingering ankle injury, Thomas decided to undergo surgery in June. But the timing of the injury ended up causing a rift between him and the organization, as the Saints believed he should have had the procedure earlier in the offseason. Still, the two sides reportedly got back on the same page after several conversations.

In a widely anticipated move, quarterback Drew Brees has announced his retirement from the NFL. Brees, who played 20 seasons in the league with the San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints, broke the news on his official Instagram profile.

The announcement included a clip of Brees’ kids—Baylen, Bowen, Callen, and Rylen—who were overjoyed that their dad will spend more time at home.

Brees also added a lengthy caption in which he delivered an emotional goodbye to the Saints organization.

“I am only retiring from playing football, I am not retiring from New Orleans,” Brees added. “This is not goodbye, rather a new beginning. Now my real life’s work begins!”

Drew Brees started his career as the Chargers’ second-round pick in 2001. He spent five years in San Diego, four of which he was a starter, before hitting free agency. The Chargers came in with a low offer to keep him and already had Philip Rivers on the roster, so Brees decided to sign with the Saints.

In New Orleans, Brees established himself as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. He led the Saints to a Super Bowl XLIV win while winning numerous individual accolades and honors, including 12 Pro Bowl nods and five All-Pro selections.

Brees also set several NFL records in a Saints jersey, including most career passing yards (80,358), most career passing completions (7,142), and highest career completion percentage (67.69).

Despite retiring, Brees will remain involved in football, having already agreed to serve as an analyst for NBC.

Brees’ departure leaves a big void on the quarterback position for the New Orleans Saints. The franchise is expected to turn to either Taysom Hill or Jameis Winston as a starter for 2021, although it wouldn’t be surprising if they make a run for another signal-caller either via draft or free agency.

The New Orleans Saints and superstar defensive end Cameron Jordan reportedly agreed to a 3-year extension on Wednesday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news on Tuesday evening.

Jordan, a four-time Pro Bowler during his first eight seasons with the NFC South squad, was already under contract with New Orleans through the 2020 season. Now, he will add another big-money deal and tie his future with his current team through 2023.

It’s not surprising that Jordan and the Saints want to continue down the same path together considering both parties’ success during their tenure together.

The Saints have made the playoffs in 4 of Jordan’s 8 seasons, and are the back-to-back NFC South champions. Jordan has been one of their defense’s most important pieces in recent years due to his elite pass-rushing skills and dominance of the line.

Jordan’s list of career accomplishments is long. In addition to his four Pro Bowl nods, he’s also been named a first-team All-Pro selection in 2017 and a second-team All-Pro last season.

He has recorded 410 tackles and 71.5 sacks since making his debut with New Orleans in 2011. He finished 2018 with 35 tackles and 12 sacks, the second-most productive season of his career.

Even more impressively, Jordan has not missed a single game going back to his NFL debut. The 29-year-old has played in all of the Saints’ games, both playoff and regular season, dating back to his rookie year.

The Saints will hope that he can provide the same level of production and consistency through 2023 under his new deal.

Everson Griffen is slated to play against the New Orleans Saints this Sunday after a six-week absence over mental health issues.

The 30-year-old defensive end hasn’t played for the Minnesota Vikings since Week 2 when he was questionably placed on injury reserve. At the time, the Vikings described Griffen’s situation as “not football related” but would not explain further.

Griffen hit news headlines in the last week of September following an incident on September 22nd where he was reported to be “explosive screaming and yelling” at the team facility. The Vikings demanded the defensive end’s agent and his family to place him under a mental checkup before he was eligible to play again.

This week, Griffen has been on the headlines in part due to the uncertainty of whether he will play on Sunday. Despite reports that the NFL wanted Minnesota to place the Pro Bowler in injury reserve, Coach Mike Zimmer hasn’t said anything about the player’s availability.

However, Griffen wasn’t in the Viking’s injury report by Friday and has been practicing all week. Zimmer also welcomed the player back and wished a quick recovery.

In his part, Griffen said he was happy to be back and looked forward to playing again.

“I’m just excited to get back here with my team and get back to the grind,” Griffen said on Wednesday. “It’s been hard to be away but I’m happy to be back. It’s a good feeling right now and I’m taking one day at a time and thing at a time to get things back on track.”

New Orleans Saints confirmed on Wednesday that they have signed free-agent running back Shane Vereen. Vereen, who previously played for New England Patriots and New York Giants, is expected to serve as a backup option while Mark Ingram serves his four games suspension. In order to free up the roster spot, the Saints waived RB Daniel Lasco with a failed physical designation.

Saints already have the best possible replacement for Ingram in 2017 NFL Rookie of the Year Alvin Kamara, but the team decided they will not overload the 22-year-old with more touches. Instead, they brought in veteran running back Terrance West and now Vereen to compete with youngsters like Trey Edmunds, Jonathan Williams and Boston Scott for Ingram’s touches.

Shane Vereen was drafted by the New England Patriots as the 56th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. He spent four years with the Patriots, during which he won a Super Bowl, before signing with the New York Giants in 2015. In the 16 games he played for the Giants last season, Vereen had underwhelming 164 rushing yards and 253 receiving yards, while failing to record a single touchdown for the first time in his career. His NFL career stats include 1,489 rushing yards and 1,865 receiving yards alongside 19 touchdowns in 79 games.
