The New England Patriots’ QB room became a bit more crowded on Tuesday. The organization decided to re-sign veteran Brian Hoyer to a one-year deal, adding a fourth quarterback to their roster ahead of the training camp. Hoyer’s agency JL Sports announced the news on social media, with the Pats later confirming the move as well.

Hoyer opened the 2020 NFL season as Cam Newton’s backup but was dropped to No. 3 on the depth chart behind Jarrett Stidham as the campaign progressed. The 35-year-old player got one start last season, throwing for 130 yards and having one interception against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4.

Hoyer was reportedly an option for several teams earlier in the offseason and visited the New York Jets in early April. The two sides couldn’t come to an agreement, which opened the way for his return to New England.

This will be Brian Hoyer’s seventh season with the Patriots, who signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State in 2009. He spent three years in his first stint with the organization before returning in 2017. Hoyer then left again in 2019 to play with the Indianapolis Colts, only to return a year later.

Throughout his NFL career, Hoyer also played with the Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, and Chicago Bears, among other teams. He has 10,404 career passing yards with 52 touchdowns and 35 interceptions.

It remains to be seen what role the Pats have in store for Hoyer. Besides having Newton and Stidham as their QB options, the organization also took Alabama’s Mac Jones in this year’s draft.

The New England Patriots are emerging as the biggest spenders in the free agency so far. The Pats have signed several players, including tight ends Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry.

On Monday, New England inked Smith to a four-year, $50 million deal. The news was confirmed to ESPN by the player’s agent Drew Rosenhaus, who revealed that the contract also includes $31.25 million in guarantees.

Smith spent the previous four seasons with the Tennessee Titans, catching 114 passes for 1,302 yards and 17 touchdowns.

A day later, the Pats also added Henry, who spent the last season playing on a franchise tag with LA Chargers. The 26-year-old player, who has 2,322 receiving yards and 21 TDs in his career, reportedly signed a three-year, $37.5 million that comes with $25 million guaranteed.

It isn’t surprising that New England splashed money on tight ends since the franchise struggled to find contributors on the position since Rob Gronkowski retired after the 2019 season. The Patriots had the lowest production from TEs in the league in the last two years.

Besides bringing in Smith and Henry, the Pats also made a number of other moves. They signed wide receivers Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne, two-time Pro Bowler Matthew Judon, safety Jalen Mills, and defensive tackle Davon Godchaux among others.

Previously, New England also took care of their quarterback position for 2021. They re-signed former NFL MVP Cam Newton, who will return on another one-year deal.

It looks like the New England Patriots are getting a badly needed addition to their wide receivers core. After trading away Brandin Cooks to Los Angeles Rams, and losing Danny Amendola in the free agency, the Patriots are now reportedly working on a deal to sign former Buffalo Bills WR Jordan Matthews. According to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, the Pats have offered Matthews a one-year deal, and the signing should be made official in the upcoming days.

Jordan Matthews spent the 2017 season with the Bills, but due to various injuries, he played only 10 games. The 25-year-old ended the season in December when he decided to undergo surgeries on his right ankle and left knee. He had 25 catches for 282 yards alongside one touchdown, all career lows.

Philadelphia Eagles drafted Jordan Matthews in the 2014 NFL draft with the 42nd pick, after trading up to get him. He played in all 16 games in his rookie season and had 67 catches for 872 yards alongside eight touchdowns. After another good season, Matthews’ form dropped in his third year with the Eagles, so the team decided to send him to Buffalo Bills alongside a third-rounder in exchange for cornerback Ronald Darby.

The New England Patriots have reached an agreement to bring back their special-teams captain Matthew Slater. According to reports, Slater signed a two-year deal while financial terms remained unknown. This puts the 32-year-old on a path to spend his entire football career with the franchise that drafted him in 2008. Slater’s father, Pro Football Hall of Famer Jackie Slater, also played only for the Rams in his NFL career.

It was reported that Matthew Slater visited the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, after becoming a free-agent. Still, Patriots wanted Slater to remain part of the team since he has been one of the team leaders in the past couple of years.

After playing college football at UCLA, Matthew Slater was drafted in the 2008 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots as the 153rd overall pick. He established himself as the important player in the Patriots system and was voted as Special Teams Captain by his teammates in 2011 season. He made his first Pro-Bowl appearance and was named First-team All-Pro in the same year. Slater went on to have six more Pro-Bowl appearances and get three more First-team All-Pro nods. He also won two Super Bowls with the Patriots, Super Bowl XLIX, and LI. His career stats include 134 tackles and 637 return yards.

Matthew Slater also received NFL’s Bart Starr Award in 2017, which is given to the player who “exemplifies character and leadership.”

It was strange to see New England Patriots losing players in the free agency without signing new ones. That changed on Friday when the team added three new players. The Patriots welcomed former Atlanta Falcons defensive end Adrian Clayborn, former Cincinnati Bengals running back Jeremy Hill, and offensive tackle Matt Tobin who spent the last season with the Seattle Seahawks.

According to the reports, Adrian Clayborn signed a two-year deal worth around $12.5 million with the Pats. Initially drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of 2011 NFL Draft, Clayborn suffered series of injuries during his early career which stopped him from showing his full potential. In the 2017 season, he finally showed promise by recording 17 quarterback hits and 9.5 sacks while playing 526 defensive snaps.

The player already confirmed the deal with Pats via his Instagram profile.

Jeremy Hill joins New England after a disappointing 2017 season. Although he started the season as Cincinnati Bengals leading running back, he underperformed and was completely outplayed by rookie Joe Mixon. In 7 games he played in 2017, Hill had 37 carries for 116 yards, while failing to record a touchdown. Hill played his best football in his rookie season in 2014, when he had 222 carries for 1,124 yards.

Finally, Matt Tobin joined the Patriots on a one year deal. He entered the league in 2013 when he signed a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted agent. The Eagles traded Tobin and seventh-round pick to the Seahawks in 2017 in order to get a fifth-round pick.

The New England Patriots previously lost important players including offensive tackle Nate Solder, who was regarded as one of the top free agents on the market and ended up signing with the New York Giants. Dion Lewis, Malcolm Butler, and Danny Amendola will also play elsewhere in the 2018 NFL season.
