New England Patriots have finally added depth to their short-handed receiving core, but they didn’t bring in Dez Bryant as everyone presumed. Instead, the Pats opted for the first-round pick from 2016 Corey Coleman, and former Denver Broncos’ member Bennie Fowler.

Patriots entered the regular 2018 season with lots of question marks surrounding their receiving core, especially since they lost Danny Amendola in the free agency and will be without Julian Edelman, who is dealing with four-game suspension. During the training camp, the team experimented with lots of options including Kenny Britt, Jordan Matthews, Malcolm Mitchell, and Eric Decker, but neither of these players made to the final roster. Pats also tried their luck with former New York Jets WR Chad Hansen, but the 23-year-old was released a week after being claimed off waivers by New England.

In shortage of better solutions, New England Patriots will now gamble on Corey Coleman and Bennie Fowler.

Corey Coleman was selected by Cleveland Browns as a 15th overall pick in 2016, but he never managed to justify that move. He played 19 games during two years in Cleveland and had 718 yards and five touchdowns. Coleman was then traded to the Buffalo Bills earlier this summer, but couldn’t make the final roster.

Bennie Fowler, on the other side, entered the league as an undrafted free agent, signing a deal to become a part of Denver Broncos’ practice squad in 2014. He made the first team in 2015 and ended up winning the Super Bowl with the Broncos in the same year. From 2015 to 2017, Fowler had 56 receptions for 698 yards and five touchdowns. He signed with the Chicago Bears in April 2018 but didn’t make the final roster.

Speculation over Rob Gronkowski’s future continues as his contract talks yield no progress.

Rumors surfaced earlier this year that the New England Patriots actively sounded out a trade before the 2018 NFL Draft. While team owner Robert Kraft called them “hogwash”, they returned at the team camp in June.

Some AFC executives privately wonder if these make a trade unavoidable. Will the Patriots seize the moment to begin their inevitable rebuilding?

Defeat at Super Bowl LII saw emotional claims about retirement from the record-breaking tight end. It was a genuine option, he claimed, and it wasn’t until April that he announced he would return to play this season.

Is this reluctance to commit to the cause fuelling the Patriots stance over a new deal? It’s understandable they won’t rush to invest in a player whose commitment is in doubt. Will they face the same issue next year? It’s an issue the team needs to be answered before investing in the player, no matter how outstanding his contributions have been.

While a tweak in terms is expected, one option is that Patriots will not improve his current contract. Gronkowski’s refused to attend voluntary workouts and put him on a collision course with head coach Bill Belichick.

It’s a fight Gronkowski won’t win unless Belichick flinches first. Can the coach afford to do so in this increasingly tense game of chicken?

New England Patriots could be in trouble at the start of 2018 NFL season. According to various reports, including those from ESPN‘s and NFL Network insiders, Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman is facing a four games suspension from the league for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy.

Edelman appealed, hoping to overturn the suspension or at least reduce it. He also issued a statement via his Instagram profile on Friday.

I am very sorry–I don’t know what happened,” – wrote Edelman. “I’ve taken many, many tests obviously over the course of my career, and nothing like this has ever happened. I apologize to the Kraft family, my coaches, teammates, and fans. As this matter is being appealed, I can’t say anymore but no matter what, I will be ready to play and pursue another championship with our team and for Patriots fans around the world.

Julian Edelman missed the entire 2017 season due to an ACL injury and just recently recovered in full. During his rehabilitation process, Edelman worked with Tom Brady’s trainer, Alex Guerrero, who is at the helm of TB12 Sports Therapy Center. After various media outlets linked this with the suspension, Guerrero decided to issue a statement.

I’ve known Julian since his rookie year and he is a phenomenal athlete who takes his training seriously-it’s disappointing to hear today’s news,” – said Guerrero in a statement. “Elite athletes sometimes work with multiple coaches and health professionals as part of their training. Here at our facility, we take a natural, holistic, appropriate and, above all, legal approach to training and recovery for all of our clients. And anyone who would suggest otherwise is irresponsible and just plain wrong.

If Julian Edelman’s suspension stays in place, he will miss Patriots’ games against the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins.
