The Sacramento Kings added some frontcourt depth to their roster this week by signing veteran center Nerlens Noel to a one-year deal. Noel’s agents confirmed the agreement to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, saying that the deal is worth $3.1 million.

Noel split the 2022-23 season with the Detroit Pistons and the Brooklyn Nets. He played limited minutes with both teams, appearing in a total of 17 games and averaging 2.1 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.

While Noel has struggled in the past few seasons, he might prove valuable for the Kings as they look to build on a successful 2022-23 campaign. He will provide them with rim protection and outstanding defense in the center position, something that their top two centers, Domantas Sabonis and Alex Len, are lacking.

The Kings actually had an interest in Noel for quite some time. They reportedly considered signing him when he was a free agent in 2021 and were close to trading for him while he was with the Pistons.

Nerlens Noel entered the league in 2013 as the sixth overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers. He spent two and a half seasons in Philly before embarking on stints with the Dallas Mavericks, the Oklahoma City Thunder, the New York Knicks, the Pistons, and the Nets. Noel is averaging 7.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game in NBA.

Oklahoma City Thunder center Nerlens Noel was whisked off the court Tuesday night after taking a scary hit from Andrew Wiggins in the 119-117 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Noel was hospitalized at the OU Medical Center and was diagnosed with a concussion the following morning.

Noel got hit as he attempted to block a dunk from Wiggins in the third quarter. Wiggins accidently hit him on the face, snapping his head back and forcing him to fall. Medics dashed toward him, placed a brace around his neck and whisked him away in a stretcher.

The 24-year-old was kept overnight at the OU Medical Center and details about his injury weren’t released until early Wednesday morning. Shams Charania of the Athletic confirmed Noel’s diagnosis on twitter.

“After a scary fall last night, Oklahoma City Thunder center Nerlens Noel has been diagnosed with a concussion—and tests showed he avoided factures,” @Shams Charania said.

Wiggins tweeted his well wishes to the center and said to the press he didn’t mean to hit him.

“I just tried to make an aggressive move and dunk,” he said. “He tried to contest it. I think he fell wrong. I really didn’t see it until I saw him on the ground. Hopefully, he’s good. I hope nothing but the best for him. I hope he gets well soon and comes back stronger.”

The saga around Nerlens Noel’s future is reportedly over. At least for one year. This 23-year-old center has signed the $4.1M one year qualifying offer with the Mavericks according to multiple sources. This way Noel will become an unrestricted free agent next year. According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Nerlens Noel previously had a 4-year, $70 million offer from Mavericks made on July 1st, that he turned down.

Noel asked for a max deal, and when Mavs were unveiling to give him that, he decided to explore other options. Dallas Mavericks pulled the4 -year, $70 million offer soon after. Other teams were unwilling to give him better offers, so Noel’s acceptance of the qualifying offer was the only way to go. He obviously thinks he deserves the max so he will be free to pursue it next season. Given his history of injuries, the only way this can happen if he stays healthy and has an outstanding season. This would favor both Noel and Dallas, who are hoping to get a good production from a player who isn’t a big burden to their salary cap.

Playing one season of college basketball for the University of Kentucky, Noel averaged 10.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 4.4 blocks, and 2.1 steals per game. He entered 2013 NBA draft, projected as a top 5 pick and even the first pick by some. He ended up being drafted by New Orleans Pelicans as 6th overall pick and immediately traded to Philadelphia 76ers alongside 2014 first round pick for Jrue Holiday. He ended up missing the entire 2013-2014 season due to a knee injury. After solid two and a half seasons at 76ers, Noel was traded in February 2017 to the Mavericks for Andrew Bogut, Justin Anderson, and a 2017 first-round pick. In his 22 games played for the Dallas Mavericks, Noel averaged 8.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game alongside 1 steal and 1.1 blocks.
