The Miami Dolphins might turn to a familiar face as they look to improve roster depth for what they hope will be a long playoff run. According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Dolphins recently hosted veteran defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh for a visit.

While a deal isn’t imminent, there is reportedly interest from both sides for a reunion. Suh previously played for the Dolphins between 2015 and 2017. 

Suh previously talked about his wish to resume his NFL career but said he is willing to be patient until the right opportunity presents itself. It hardly gets better than Miami, which is one of the hottest teams in the league right now and a Super Bowl contender.

The 36-year-old followed a similar script in 2022 when he sat out the first half of the season before signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. Suh ended up playing eight games with the Eagles and was part of the team that reached Super Bowl LVII.

Ndamukong Suh also played with the Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his 13 years in the league. He has five Pro Bowl nods and three First-Team All-Pro selections on his resume while being part of the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team. Suh also won Super Bowl LV as a member of the Bucs.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continue having a busy offseason that looks to position them for another Super Bowl run in 2021. According to multiple reports, the Bucs agreed to a new contract extension with left tackle Donovan Smith while also re-signing free-agent defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

Smith received a two-year, $31.8 million contract extension that will now keep him with the organization through 2023. The deal comes with $30 million in guarantees for the player while the Bucs get a significant cap-relief.

Instead of counting $14.25 million against the cap next season, Smith will now only have a $3.6 million cap hit. This gives Tampa Bay more than $10 million to use for other moves.

Shortly after finalizing Smith’s extension, the Buccaneers worked out a new contract for Suh. The five-time Pro Bowler reportedly agreed to a one-year deal that will pay him $10 million. The agreement should contain several voidable years for salary-cap purposes.

Suh was solid for the Buccaneers in 2020, totaling 6.0 sacks in 16 starts. He also added 44 tackles, 19 QB hits, and one forced fumble.

With this tempo, Tampa Bay will manage to keep their championship core almost intact. They previously franchise-tagged wideout Chris Godwin while signing several players to new deals, including linebacker Shaq Barrett and tight end Rob Gronkowski to new deals.

In a recent chat with Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Suh, who is a free agent in March, said that his plan for the future is being in Tampa Bay in 2021.

“My goal is to come back and have an opportunity to go win another championship,” said Suh while hinting that Bucs general manager Jason Licht and head coach Bruce Arians feel the same way about this.

Suh added that he believes he still has much football left in him and doesn’t think about retirement.

“And I honestly believe I have a lot of elite, great talent left in me to play,” he continued. “I’m not ready to hang them up yet.”

In order to be back with the Bucs, Suh will most likely have to take a pay cut from his $8 million salary in 2020. Tampa Bay will only have 31 players under contract in March and have a number of other key players they need to keep, including Pro Bowl linebacker Shaq Barrett, wideout Chris Godwin, and tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Suh had a solid campaign in 2020, totaling six sacks, 44 tackles, and 19 QB hits in the regular season. He was also productive in the postseason, having 1.5 sacks and two tackles in the Super Bowl win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I wanted the entire defense, if we could, to stay together,” said Arians on Wednesday. “They played so well together. Each piece of the puzzle knew each other. Suh was a big, big part of it. Not as much in the sack game as much as his interior pressure and the great job he did last year against the run.”

While failing to post head-turning numbers last season, managing 41 tackles and 2.5 sacks, Ndamukong Suh was still an integral part of Tampa Bay’s defense. He managed to impact the game in various ways while often being double-teamed by opponents. This, in return, enabled other Bucs’ defensive linemen to have more space to wreak havoc. “Terrible, without question,” – said Suh when asked about the performance of Ram’s run defense in the last two weeks. “That’s my personal opinion… It’s terrible just from a standpoint of how much run yardage we gave up.”

LA Rams’ opponents rushed for 106.8 yards on average in the first five weeks of the season and managed to score three rushing touchdowns in the process. This is something Ndamukong Suh wants to fix.

“I can’t think back to many times to defenses that I’ve been a part of that have been [at] 191 yards, let alone many times over 100…I’ve been a part of some great defenses where we’ve, in a year, not allowed but maybe one team to get close to 100 or over 100,” – the 31-year-old added. “So that’s what I pride myself on and want to maintain that, and we have all the tools to be able to be that type of defense.”

He was also a part of the defense that ended 29th in run defense and 26th in sacks in the 2017 season. With his release, the Dolphins got a large contract off their books and saved $3.9 million in cap space. If they were to release him in June, the team could have saved $17 million against the cap.

Julius Thomas, on the other side, spent just one season with the team, after being acquired from the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was featured in 14 games in 2017 season, and had 41 receptions for 388 yards, adding three touchdowns in the process.

Miami Dolphins also released linebacker Lawrence Timmons, who joined the team in 2017, signing a two-year deal worth $12 million. Before joining Dolphins, Timmons was a member of Pittsburgh Steelers for 10 years during which he had 677 tackles and 35.5 sacks. His game didn’t translate well in Miami since Timmons managed only 58 tackles and three passes defended.

Besides making these cuts, Miami Dolphins have officially confirmed the acquisition of defensive end Robert Quinn from the Los Angeles Rams. The Dolphins sent a 2018 fourth-round draft pick and agreed to swap sixth-round picks with the Rams in exchange for Quinn.
