The Golden State Warriors are set to complete a four-team trade that will see them complete the move for guard Gary Payton II and three more players; James Wiseman from the Detroit Pistons, Saddiq Bey from the Atlanta Falcons, and Kevin Knox from the Portland Trail Blazers.

While Payton had previously begun his physical with the Warriors, the team decided to halt the trade after team doctors expressed concerns over Payton’s injured abdomen. The Warriors have since committed to waiting for an NBA inquiry into Portland’s alleged failure to divulge necessary pre-agreement medical information.

Should any findings of wrongdoing be made, the Trail Blazers could face the loss of draft picks as well as fines relating to the package of five second-round picks that the Warriors traded to the Blazers to acquire Payton.

In addition to the abdomen injury, the Trail Blazers did not disclose to the Warriors that Payton had been taking painkilling medication in order to allow him to play this season. The trade could not be amended, however, as the trade deadline had already passed by the time such discoveries were made.

Veteran guard Terrence Ross appears to be on the road to signing with the Phoenix Suns after a long-winded race to acquire his signature, sources confirmed on Saturday. Currently, Ross is in the process of finalizing his contract buyout with the Orlando Magic and is expected to be able to sign as a free agent sometime early this coming week.

Initially, the Dallas Mavericks emerged as a frontrunner in the race to acquire the veteran, however, Ross was lured in by the Suns after owner Mat Ishbia and coach Monty Williams made a convincing argument to the player. This included the opportunity for Ross to play alongside Devin Booker and Kevin Durant to add depth to the Suns’ wing as the team gears up for a lengthy playoff run.

With Ross set to clear his waivers, he will have until March 1 to agree to the buyout in order to be eligible to be registered on his new team’s roster.

Ross is a highly sought-after guard this season, posting 38% 3-point shooting while exhibiting a high level of athleticism on the court. Upon joining the Suns, Ross will lineup alongside new arrivals Kevin Durant and T.J. Warren, who were acquired in a headline-making deal with the Brooklyn Nets last week.

As always, the final hours before the NBA trade deadline were hectic and saw teams scrambling to improve their rosters. One of the most active teams was the Los Angeles Clippers, who made several deals to improve their depth in several positions.

The most notable trade the Clippers pulled off was acquiring veteran guard Eric Gordon from the Houston Rockets. Regarded as a great defensive player and reliable three-point shooter, Gordon was mentioned in trade talks ever since the Rockets started their rebuild, but Houston’s asking price proved to be too much for interested teams.

The Clippers finally managed to get the Rockets to cave on Thursday, orchestrating a 3-team deal that also included the Memphis Grizzlies. The Clippers received Gordon and three second-rounders while sending shooting guard Luke Kennard to the Grizzlies and veteran John Wall and pick swap rights to Houston. The Rockets also received veteran Danny Green from the Grizzlies.

Gordon is expected to improve the Clippers’ second unit and bring his playoff experience to the team. The former sixth-man of the year proved valuable in the postseason runs during the James Harden era in Houston and is averaging 16.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game in the playoffs.

For Wall, this is a return to the franchise that released him just this past summer. The same scenario is expected to happen in the following days, as the Rockets reportedly have no interest in keeping Wall on the team.

Quinn Cook has reportedly agreed to a one-year contract with the Sacramento Kings, a source revealed to ESPN on Monday. This comes after the 29-year-old player worked out with the Kings in Las Vegas during the NBA summer league in July.

Cook is expected to compete for the Kings’ third point guard spot, while his experience is largely expected to help boost the performances of the team’s younger points guards, De’Aaron Fox and Davion Mitchell.

The point guard has played 188 NBA games throughout his career, averaging 6.4 points, 1.6 assists, and 1.7 rebounds. During this time, he has racked up a wealth of playoff experience, winning the NBA Championship with the Golden State Warriors in 2018 and again with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.

During the 2020-21 season, Cook left the Lakers for the Cleveland Cavaliers and played a combined 23 games for both teams that season. His final game that season came when the Cavs took on the Lakers on March 26, 2021. As the season wound down to a close along with his contract, Cook was unable to find a new team in the NBA. As a result, he played with the Stockton Kings in the NBA G League.

Veteran NBA center Aron Baynes has joined Australia’s National Basketball League side Brisbane Bullets, the player’s agent, Daniel Moldovan, revealed to ESPN. The two-year deal includes a provision that will allow Baynes to depart the team and return to the NBA if desired.

This move comes a year after the 35-year-old player suffered a freak fall at the Tokyo Olympics that resulted in the player being hospitalized for months. It was doubtful whether or not Baynes would be able to return to the sport following the serious injury.

The Bullets beat out teams from both Europe and China in the race to sign Baynes. Ultimately, because those teams did not offer an out for him to return to the NBA, Baynes decided to join the Brisbane-based team. With the NBL season ending in February, a return to the NBA could happen sooner than initially expected.

During his nine years playing in the NBA, Baynes’ career highlight came in 2014, when he lifted the NBA Championship with the San Antonio Spurs. His last appearance in the league came for the Toronto Raptors, with the player averaging 6.1 points and 5.2 rebounds in the 2020-21 season.

22-year-old forward Keldon Johnson has agreed to a four-year, $80 million contract extension with the San Antonio Spurs, his representative, Klutch Sports Agency, announced on Friday.

This is the latest move in what has been a busy post-season for the Spurs, who traded away All-Star guard Dejounte Murray to the Atlanta Hawks two weeks ago in exchange for forward Danilo Gallinari and three first-round picks. This trade came as a surprise to Spurs fans considering that Murray was the team’s leading points scorer last season, averaging 21.1 points per game.

Johnson arrived in San Antonio as a first-round pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, making him the 29th overall pick. Coming off of his third season with the Spurs, the 22-year-old player enjoyed his best performance during the last year, starting 74 games and reaching a career-high points average of 17.1 points per game. He also achieved shooting statistics of 39.8 percent from the 3-point range. Johnson has come a long way in his career with the Spurs, especially considering that he was struggling to break into the team and get minutes on the court a little over a year ago.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Denver Nuggets, his agent, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, confirmed on Wednesday. The deal, worth $30 million, kicks into effect during the 2023-24 season and includes a player option.

2022-23 would have been Caldwell-Pope’s final season with the Nuggets prior to the contract extension; a season which would see him receive a payout of $14 million. Now, as a result of the extension, the 29-year-old’s career earnings will rise above $120 million.

The guard arrived in Denver two weeks ago as part of a trade that saw Will Barton and Monte Morris sent to the Washington Wizards. Now, he is expected to be a key 3-and-D performer alongside MVP Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, and Michael Porter Jr.

Achieving a 41% record at catch-and-shoot 3-pointers over the past two years, Caldwell-Pope is expected to greatly benefit from Jokic’s top passing ability. He has also achieved career averages of 11.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.

Caldwell-Pope appeared in 77 games for the Wizards last season, averaging 13.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game.

Free-agent forward Danilo Gallinari has agreed to join the Boston Celtics on a two-year deal, ESPN reported on Sunday. The fully guaranteed deal, worth $13.3 million, includes a player option in the second year.

This deal, together with the partial guarantee from his contract with the San Antonio Spurs that was waived ahead of the 2022-23 season, will see Gallinari earn in excess of $17 million this season. Gallinari arrived at the Spurs as part of a trade that saw All-Star guard Dejounte Murray move to the Atlanta Hawks.

During his last season with the Hawks in 2022-23, the veteran forward averaged 11.7 points on 38% 3-point shooting. Across his 13 seasons in the NBA, the 33-year-old player has averaged 15.6 points and 4.8 rebounds.

Gallinari has made the fifth-most 3-pointers by a player standing at 6-foot-10 or taller, with his current tally standing at 1,426. Joining him at the Celtics this season is guard Malcolm Brogdon, who is arriving from the Indiana Pacers in exchange for five Celtics players as well as a 2023 first-round draft pick.

The Portland Trail Blazers have decided to tear apart their iconic backcourt of CJ McCollum and Damien Lillard. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Blazers have traded McCollum to the New Orleans Pelicans for a package highlighted by Josh Hart, Nickeil Walker-Alexander, and a 2022 protected first-rounder.

Reportedly, Portland will also get guards Tomas Satoransky and Didi Louzada alongside two second-round selections as part of the deal. On the other hand, the Pelicans acquire forward Larry Nance Jr. and veteran Tony Snell alongside McCollum.

The Trail Blazers have been shopping McCollum for a while now, looking to reshape their roster after coming up short in the playoffs in recent seasons and seeing four first-round exits in the past five years. At one point, they were close to sending the NBA’s Most Improved Player from 2016 to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Ben Simmons, but the two teams couldn’t agree on a draft compensation included in the deal. After that, the market for McCollum dried up until the Pelicans picked up the phone to make the inquiry.

New Orleans was looking to add a reliable scoring threat recently, and it’s safe to say they have successfully completed the task with the acquisition of McCollum. The 30-year-old averaged 20+ points in each of the past six seasons and should comfortably clear the number in 2021-22 as well. In 36 games he played for Portland this season, he scored 20.5 points per contest while adding 4.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists.

On the other hand, Portland made the deal by having a long-term picture in mind. So while the deal won’t make them better at the moment, they have acquired tradable assets they can potentially flip into a difference-making player. Another benefit of the trade for them is that they are now more than $17 million under the tax.
