The most intriguing storyline of this year’s NBA offseason is receiving a new chapter. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Philadelphia 76ers’ disgruntled All-Star Ben Simmons has changed his stance and became more open to rejoining the team.

Simmons asked the 76ers to trade him in the summer and has remained away from the franchise through training camp and so far in the preseason. Previous reports indicated that the 25-year-old guard is determined not to play for the franchise anymore, but it appears that isn’t the case anymore.

Wojnarowski reports that Simmons’ representatives and the 76ers had positive talks over the weekend and that the player is willing to have a sit-down with Philly’s brass. If everything goes well, he could rejoin the team “as soon as this week.”

The 76ers were ready to respect Simmons’ request but were unable to find an acceptable trade offer. Most teams were willing to offer a picks-heavy package, while Philadelphia is interested in a deal that would include a star player and help them remain championship contenders.

When Simmons didn’t report to the team, the 76ers decided to withhold part of his salary and put the money in escrow. They proceeded to fine him for every preseason game he missed, and the total is $1 million as of Monday. In case Simmons comes back, he will get the remainder of the money left in escrow.

The Philadelphia 76ers are still holding on All-Star guard Ben Simmons despite the player requesting a trade earlier in the offseason. The 76ers front office reportedly wants a significant haul to consider any deal for Simmons, and these demands have put off many of the interested teams. Well, except the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Cavaliers have made several approaches to the 76ers for Simmons in the past but haven’t managed to get a deal over the line. However, according to influential NBA correspondent Marc Stein, the Cavs don’t intend to quit so easily.

In his recent NBA Power Rankings piece, Stein said that league sources tell him Cleveland remains very interested in landing Simmons and will continue to make a push to land a player that would significantly speed up their rebuild process.

As Stein points out, Cleveland has the assets to make a deal for Simmons. They own all of their first-round picks moving forward and also have several young and exciting players that they might offer to Philly. This includes Lauri Markkanen, who signed a team-friendly contract with the franchise this offseason, and backcourt duo Darius Garland and Collin Sexton.

Another route that the Cavs might go is including Kevin Love in the deal for Simmons. Love still has two years on his four-year, $120 million contract but doesn’t seem to fit in the team’s plans, especially with an abundance of talented youngsters, such as this year’s No. 3 pick Evan Mobley, playing on his position.

It remains to be seen whether the Cavaliers can make an offer that will entice the 76ers. Philly’s president of basketball operations Daryl Morey is reportedly keeping his eyes on a superstar players like Bradley Beal or Damian Lillard and will hardly want to settle for anything else.

The Brooklyn Nets have agreed to a deal with veteran forward Paul Millsap, adding another former All-Star to their already stacked roster. The news was confirmed to The Athletic‘s Shams Charania by Millsap’s agent DeAngelo Simmons.

Charania adds that Millsap, who was a free agent after his contract with the Denver Nuggets expired, received interest from several playoff contenders. The 36-year-old player reportedly had offers from the Golden State Warriors, LA Clippers, and Chicago Bulls, but ended up picking the Nets.

By signing Millsap, the Nets continued to do an impressive job in building their roster for the next season. The team previously re-signed six-time All-Star Blake Griffin while also acquiring veteran point guard Patty Mills in free agency. Reportedly, Brooklyn is a favorite to sign All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge as well.

Paul Millsap spent his last four NBA seasons playing for the Denver Nuggets. While he never managed to replicate the All-Star form from his early career in Denver, he was still a valuable contributor and provided veteran leadership for the young team.

Despite this, the Nuggets decided not to offer Millsap a new deal after he struggled in 2020-21 and had his worse season since his sophomore year. He finished the campaign averaging 9.0 points, 1.8 assists, and career-low 4.7 rebounds.

Millsap, who was a second-round pick in 2006, previously played for the Utah Jazz and Atlanta Hawks as well. He was selected to the All-Star game four times and has one NBA All-Defensive Second Team nod.

Despite not having played in an NBA game since March 2019, legendary big man Pau Gasol expressed a desire in an interview with ESPN’s Zach Lowe to return to the league, possibly for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Gasol, whose best years were spent as the main piece in the Lakers’ frontcourt where he won two championships in 2009 and 2010, said that he is working out in an attempt to sign with the team.

The Spanish big man’s last appearance was in 2019 for the Milwaukee Bucks. After falling victim to a foot injury in March, he then missed the rest of the season. He had only played three games that season before the injury.

Gasol hasn’t played regularly since the 2017-18 season for the San Antonio Spurs, and might be a long shot to make it back to the league at the age of 40.

However, Gasol’s desire appears to be genuine and he would especially like a chance to play with his brother for the first time on a Lakers team that will head into the season as favorites to repeat as NBA champions.

The big man said, “I’m not going to lie. It would be very special, and now that my brother’s there, even more special. But I’m not in a position now to be very demanding. I don’t have 10 offers on the table.”

Gasol will look for an opportunity over the coming weeks to return to the league, even if it means waiting past its December 22nd start date for that chance to come.

It appears that not all NBA players are happy about the league’s decision to continue the 2019/20 season at Disney World in Orlando next month. This is why the league reportedly now considers giving such individuals an option to opt-out of the season resume without major consequences.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Wednesday that a number of NBA players expressed their doubts about playing in Orlando and are not thrilled with the circumstances surrounding the league’s plan. Portland Trail Blazers’ Carmelo Anthony even publicly expressed his concerns, recently telling reporters that he’s thinking about whether to play.

This reportedly prompted the NBA and NBA Players’ Association to start working on an agreement that will allow those players a way out in case they end up deciding not to play. The talks are still ongoing, but it is expected that the two sides might have an agreement on the matter in the next few days.

Wojnarowski adds that players who voluntarily miss the rest of the 2019/20 would not be paid for the final eight regular-season games as a repercussion.

Reportedly, there are several reasons why some players are hesitant to play in Orlando, but most of them revolve around safety and health protocols. According to the current plan, the players wouldn’t be allowed to have visitors until the first round of playoffs which is scheduled to wrap up almost seven weeks after teams first arrive at the Disney World complex.

Additionally, the players would be required to spend all of their time inside the complex. Those that leave at any point would be subjected to a 10-day quarantine upon return.

With Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant both out for this NBA season, Brooklyn Nets are reportedly already making plans for the 2020/21. Reportedly, this includes trying to land a third star player by giving up some of their young talent.

The 2019/20 NBA season saw championship-contending teams abandoning the “Big Three” concept and reverting to having superstar duos surrounded by quality role players. Nets certainly fall in this category with Irving and Durant, but it looks like the team doesn’t believe this will be enough to get them to the top.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reports that Brooklyn has been exploring the market since the start of the year and wouldn’t mind parting with “some of their young talent to acquire a third star along Irving and Durant.” It is still unclear which players would be available, but Nets certainly don’t lack talent.

With Durant out and Irving being limited to just 20 games this season, players like Spencer Dinwiddie, Caris LeVert, and Jarrett Allen stepped up big time for the Nets. Dinwiddie established himself as a borderline All-Star player, averaging 20.6 points per game while LeVert also took a huge jump by contributing with 17.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game. Allen also continued to grow as a player and even pushed DeAndre Jordan out of the starting lineup.

While all three players have a bright future in the NBA, their timeline might not be aligned with the one of Irving and Durant. Having two bonafide superstars in their prime means Brooklyn needs to be in the win-now mode and do everything it takes to get to the next level. So, expect the Nets to look a bit different, and probably scarier, when the next NBA season tips off.

Basketball won’t be returning anytime soon. According to reports around the league, the most probable timeframe for the resume of NBA, which was suspended last week due to coronavirus pandemic, is mid-June.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that there is a growing understanding among the teams around the league that the NBA activities won’t be resumed in full at least for the next three months. This would be the “best-case scenario,” but even then, the fans wouldn’t be able to attend the games.

It’s important to note that The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention handed out a recommendation that the events or gatherings with more than 50 people should not be organized in the next eight weeks.

With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the NBA initially went with a plan to continue the competition but without an audience. However, the league changed its mind after Utah Jazz’s center Rudy Gobert tested positive on the virus. In the following days, Gobert’s teammate Donovan Mitchell and Detroit Pistons’ Christian Wood were also found positive.

NBA’s lead was followed by all the major sports in North America, with most competitions being suspended. NHL and MLS suspended their respective seasons, while MLB canceled its spring trainings.

It’s an extension or free agency for San Antonio Spurs’ guard DeMar DeRozan. According to Yahoo Sports, DeRozan will decline his player option and become a free agent if he doesn’t agree to an extension with the Spurs by June.

DeRozan has one year left on his old deal, which pays him $27.7 million. But thanks to an opt-out clause, the 30-year-old can become a free agent and likely command a bigger number on the free market.

This might be a wise decision, considering that this summer won’t be so star-studded like 2019’s free agency. If he enters the free-agent market, DeRozan could easily be one of the biggest names available and in line for a maximum contract. Some of the teams that have shown early interest are New York Knicks and Orlando Magic.

DeMar DeRozan has been playing very well this season, despite the fact that San Antonio Spurs seem like they won’t be able to catch the eighth and final playoff spot in the West. DeRozan is averaging 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game while shooting a career-high 52.6 percent from the field.

DeRozan joined San Antonio in the summer of 2018 as part of a blockbuster trade that helped Toronto Raptors land Kawhi Leonard. He previously spent the previous nine seasons with the Raptors, who took him ninth overall in 2009.

One month in the new NBA season, Andre Iguodala is still a member of Memphis Grizzlies, even if that’s only on paper. And it looks like it will stay that way until someone gives up a first-round pick for him.

When Golden State Warriors dealt Iguodala to Grizzlies in a salary cut move, the majority of the league expected that the veteran forward will swiftly agree to a buyout and join a contender. That didn’t happen just yet, despite the two sides agreeing that the 35-year-old will remain away from the team until his status is resolved.

During his appearance on NBA Countdown, ESPN’s insider Adrian Wojnarowski said that Memphis won’t buy out Iguodala at all, and want interested parties like Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers and Houston Rockets to trade for him. The Grizzlies’ starting price is a first-rounder, and they are not willing to budge from that.

The big issue for most teams represents Andre Iguodala’s $17.2 million salary this season. Most championship contenders would have to give away the majority of their depth to facilitate this move, which doesn’t seem likely. Also, teams like Lakers and Clippers are lacking the draft assets to pull off such a move, which is why they were hopeful Iguodala will be available for free.

Iguodala averaged 5.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game last season, but he showed up in playoffs where he put up 9.8 points per game.

Boston Celtics signing Gordon Hayward to a max deal back in the summer of 2017 didn’t work out the way they thought it will. Hayward was sidelined for the entire 2017/18 NBA season due to a gruesome leg injury and struggled to find his form in the previous season. However, this still didn’t convince Celtics’ to move on from the 29-year-old forward.

According to Keith Smith of SB Nation, Celtics had the opportunity to trade Hayward this summer but the offer was “shut down quickly.” Smith reports that one NBA executive told him his team tried to contract Boston to see Hayward’s availability but got a negative response.

“We made a call, but it got shut down quickly,” – the executive told Smith. “I think Danny [Ainge] and Brad [Stevens] know what they have in Hayward for this year and going forward. He’s going to be really good again.”

Following Kyrie Irving’s departure this summer, Boston Celtics managed to bounce back quickly by signing Kemba Walker to a max contract. Walker, alongside Celtics’ young and deep roster, is expected to keep the team in contention for years to come and help them avoid rebuilding. This is why Boston is betting that Gordon Hayward might return to his All-Star form and propel them to the top of stacked East.

Hayward played in 72 games with the Celtics last season, averaging 11.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.
