The 2020 NBA Draft was finally held on Wednesday night, five months later than it was previously scheduled, and the Minnesota Timberwolves had the top pick and carte blanche to select whatever player they wanted.

They settled on Georgia Bulldogs shooting guard Anthony Edwards, turning into last night’s biggest prize at the virtual event.

Edwards burst onto the scene as one of college basketball’s best young players as a freshman last season before the campaign was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Atlanta native started 32 games for the Bulldogs, lighting up the scoreboard for 19.1 points per game on 40% shooting along with 5.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.3 steals.

The Timberwolves made the decision to select Edwards over other top prospects such as LaMelo Ball and James Wiseman due to his excellent scoring potential in the pro game. He is expected to be a volume scorer who will add explosiveness to Minnesota’s young core of players.

Ball, long considered to be the favorite to be the top pick in the draft, slid to #3 to the Charlotte Hornets while Wiseman went 2nd overall to the Golden State Warriors.

Expect Edwards to get plenty of playing time in the upcoming season as the Timberwolves look to take small steps towards contention.

It appears that not all NBA players are happy about the league’s decision to continue the 2019/20 season at Disney World in Orlando next month. This is why the league reportedly now considers giving such individuals an option to opt-out of the season resume without major consequences.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Wednesday that a number of NBA players expressed their doubts about playing in Orlando and are not thrilled with the circumstances surrounding the league’s plan. Portland Trail Blazers’ Carmelo Anthony even publicly expressed his concerns, recently telling reporters that he’s thinking about whether to play.

This reportedly prompted the NBA and NBA Players’ Association to start working on an agreement that will allow those players a way out in case they end up deciding not to play. The talks are still ongoing, but it is expected that the two sides might have an agreement on the matter in the next few days.

Wojnarowski adds that players who voluntarily miss the rest of the 2019/20 would not be paid for the final eight regular-season games as a repercussion.

Reportedly, there are several reasons why some players are hesitant to play in Orlando, but most of them revolve around safety and health protocols. According to the current plan, the players wouldn’t be allowed to have visitors until the first round of playoffs which is scheduled to wrap up almost seven weeks after teams first arrive at the Disney World complex.

Additionally, the players would be required to spend all of their time inside the complex. Those that leave at any point would be subjected to a 10-day quarantine upon return.

NBA will give teams an opportunity to make roster changes before the 2019/20 season restarts in July. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the league will open a “transaction window” in late June and enable the conversion of two-way players as well as free-agent signings.

This transaction window will most likely start around June 22nd and will remain open for one week. The interesting thing is that all 30 NBA teams can take part and not just the 22 teams that will participate in the season resume.

While some teams already have their roster packed and won’t benefit from this decision, others will get a chance to make some final tweaks. Also, teams that lost some of their key players to season-ending injuries like Brooklyn Nets, Dallas Mavericks, and Utah Jazz will now be able to replace them and enter the postseason with a full roster.

According to the NBA’s plan, the 2019/20 season will resume with 22 teams at Disneyworld in Orlando. The league plans to play the first games in late July, with October 12th being set as the date for the final game of the NBA Finals.

Owing to the circumstances surrounding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that has forced the postponement of sporting leagues and events around the world, the NCAA, college basketball’s governing association, has announced the indefinite postponement of its deadline for men’s basketball players to withdraw from the NBA Draft and retain their collegiate eligibility.

Senior vice president of the NCAA Dan Gavitt said, “This modification is being made with the health and well-being of our student-athletes in mind, along with their ability to make the most informed decisions during this uncertain time, and is based on the recent announcement by the NBA to postpone the 2020 NBA Draft Combine.”

The original June 3rd date, which is after the annual combine which gives players more information about when in the draft they will be taken and/or if they will selected at all.

This date is designed to give players who had previously declared themselves selectable in the annual June draft the option to return to school if their professional prospects are unfavorable.

It remains to be seen if the 2020 Draft, scheduled for June 25th, will be able to held on the planned date or if it will be postponed. The NCAA is likely to wait for more NBA announcements before naming a date for players to retain their eligibility.

Freshman Texas Tech guard Jahmi’us Ramsey declared himself eligible for next month’s NBA Draft over the weekend, joining a large group of underclassmen that have decided to take steps towards a professional career.

Ramsey posted an announcement on social media detailing his plans to make himself eligible for selection. However, he will not immediately hire an agent, which could potentially allow him to return for the Red Raiders for his sophomore season this winter.

The 18-year-old Texas native, who is one of the youngest players eligible for selection in this year’s draft, was a five-star recruit before joining the Red Raiders last fall.

He put together an impressive freshman campaign for Texas Tech before the season was suspended and eventually canceled in March due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Ramsey averaged 15.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, starting all 27 of the games in which he played.

A 6’4″ combo guard with impressive athleticism and isolation scoring ability, Ramsey could be a great pick for a team that is looking to add a scorer to its rotation. His game still needs some refinement, but it’s clear to see why teams will be interested in acquiring his services.

The 2020 Draft is scheduled to be held on Thursday, June 25th.

Declaring for the NBA Draft is becoming somewhat of a trend for University of Kentucky Wildcats in the lead-up to the June event.

On Tuesday, junior forward Nick Richards became the fourth player from John Calipari’s squad to announce that he will enter the professional Draft ahead of schedule.

The 6’11” forward has now ensured that 80% of the team’s starting lineup will not return for next season. Richards, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, averaged 14.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game this season in 30 starts until the season was called off.

Richards spent his first two seasons in Lexington as a reserve, seeing only minimal time on the court and falling into the shadow of other talented big men. He took a big step forward this season, however, becoming a key member of Kentucky’s frontcourt.

He was named a first-team All-SEC selection by writers, and impressed with his tenacious defense and surprisingly good shot. People around the country in college basketball circles were impressed with how much the big man improved in such a short time.

Consensus on Richards’ draft position isn’t settled, with some predicting him to go as early as late in the first round and others considering him a second-round selection.

Long rumored to be going pro after his freshman season at the University of Kentucky, guard Tyrese Maxey has officially announced that he will be declaring for this summer’s NBA Draft.

Maxey, a 6’3″ guard and a consensus top fifteen prospect for this summer’s draft, announced his decision in a post on social media that thanked Kentucky’s “Big Blue Nation” for its support during his partial season at the school.

He ended his announcement with words of gratitude for his time in Kentucky, stating, “Thank you to the Big Blue Nation, my coaches, teammates, and everyone who has played a part in making this an incredible year. I will always bleed blue!”

Maxey, a native of Texas, turned 19 last November. He is expected to be a lottery pick in the draft thanks largely to his play-making ability and athleticism, and has also shown flashes of scoring brilliance.

The freshman wowed the basketball world with a 26 point performance in a Kentucky’s season-opening win over then number #1 Michigan State at Madison Square Garden.

He finished the season with an average of 14 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game for the Wildcats.

Expect Maxey to not last long on the draft board before being selected in this summer’s draft.

French point guard Theo Maledon, who is considered to be one of the top prospects for this year’s NBA Draft, has made the decision to make himself eligible for selection.

Maledon, a native of Rouen, turns 19-years-old in June and has been one of the key players at his French club, ASVEL, during the 2019-20 season. He was largely expected to take home the prestigious EuroLeague Rising Star Award, which is presented annually to the top young player in European basketball.

While that award may be on hold due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, Maledon has decided to take the next step in his career. The 6’5″ guard has averaged 7.1 points, 2.3 assists, and 17 minutes per game for one of France’s best teams.

Maledon is a very young player who is expected to need to add some size in order to find success in the National Basketball Association, but projects as a possible starter at the point guard position. He draws rave reviews for his work ethic and commitment to the sport, despite needing to polish up aspects of his game.

The young French guard is projected to be a first round pick in this summer’s draft.

University of Arizona big man Zeke Nnaji has decided to leave college after only one season and declare himself for the upcoming NBA Draft, which is scheduled to be held this summer.

Nnaji, who joined the Wildcats as a fairly unheralded recruit out of Lakeville, Minnesota last fall, put in one of the strongest freshman seasons of any player in the country before the basketball season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A power forward who measures seven feet tall, Nnaji averaged 16.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game on 57% shooting for the Pac-12’s Wildcats this season.

Despite initial concerns that Nnaji, a latecomer to the sport, would struggle to adapt to high-level competition in the college game, he put those doubts to rest by displaying skill and a surprisingly refined game.

Nnaji, the son of Nigerian immigrants to the United States, made his decision official with a tweet posted to his official account on Thursday afternoon.

The talented big man is expected to be selected at the back end of the first round or in the front end of the second round in the upcoming draft. ESPN currently ranks him as the #34 player on the board for the upcoming draft.

The son of former #1 overall pick and NBA staple Kenyon Martin has declared that he will make himself eligible for the 2020 NBA Draft, following in his father’s footsteps.

Kenyon Martin Jr., who spent this season playing preparatory basketball at IMG Academy in Florida, will try his luck in this summer’s draft despite not having played professional or college basketball after finishing high school.

Martin Jr. forewent a scholarship opportunity to play basketball at Vanderbilt University to head for the league.

The 19-year-old forward measures in at 6’7″ and is lauded for his energy and skill on the court. While still polishing his offensive game, Martin Jr. receives high marks for his level of effort and defensive prowess.

Martin Jr. wrote about his decision on Instagram, “It has been a lifelong dream of mine and I will continue to work day by day to prove to myself and everyone that this is where I belong.”

He will now look to make a name for himself in the draft, which comes exactly 20 years after his father was taken with the first overall pick by the New Jersey Nets out of the University of Cincinnati.

The NBA Draft is scheduled to take place on Thursday, June 25th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
