The NBA is considering making another change to the All-Star Game format. Shams Charania of The Athletic reported on Friday that the league might scrap the current draft format and go back to Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference matchup once again.

Charania reports that the format change, among other concepts, was a point of discussion during the league’s recent Board of Governor and general manager meetings.

The league and NBA Players’ Association agreed to make changes to the All-Star Game in their most recent collective bargaining agreement. Reportedly, the changes might be implemented as soon as the 2023-24 season. The 2024 NBA All-Star weekend is set to take place in Indianapolis.

The NBA has been looking for ways to make the All-Star game more competitive in recent seasons. It made several changes in recent editions, including organizing a draft in which a player with All-Star fan votes from each conference would serve as a captain and draft a team from a pool of starters and reserves.

The draft concept was used in the last five editions of the All-Star game, seeing Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James serving as a captain in all of them. Prior to that, the league had used the West vs. East format since the inception of the All-Star game in 1951.

Milwaukee Bucks’ star Giannis Antetokounmpo is already thinking about a strategy for the upcoming All-Star Game Draft. Antetokounmpo, who was named the captain after getting the highest number of fan votes in Eastern Conference, recently told reporters that he might select Golden State Warriors’ guard Steph Curry with his first pick.

“I might pick Steph because he picked me first last year, so I have to return the favor,” – said Antetokounmpo on Monday night. “After that, I think it is going to be random.”

The 24-year-old also discussed several other aspects of his draft strategy, saying that he intends to make a list of all players he wants to be on his team before the draft. He added that he will put an emphasis on drafting his Bucks’ teammate Khris Middleton and players who are having their first All-Star appearance.

“I am going to try to make a team that is going to play hard,” – Antetokounmpo explained. “I think I am going to go with the young players.”

NBA All-Star Game will keep the format from the last year with two top fan votes getters in each conference, Giannis Antetokounmpo from East and Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James from West, being named captains and given an opportunity to draft their team from a pool of All-Star starters and reserves. This year’s draft will take place on n February 7th and will be broadcast live on television.

After the last NBA All-Star game ended with the result 192-182 in favor of the West, it became evident that something needed to be done to make the games more exciting. Players didn’t play any defense and everyone show 3 pointers. This is why the National Basketball Association announced on Tuesday that the next All-Star game will be played under the new format.

Starting from 2018 All-Star game, there will be no traditional matchup between Eastern and Western Conference. Instead, the two players who get the most fan votes will be named captains of the teams and get a chance to select the players regardless of the conference. One other major change is that the 2018 All-Star game will be played for charity. Each team will get to select a Los Angeles area based charity or national organization where donations will be used to support local efforts.

There will be still 12 players selected from each conference, 5 of them as starters. The fan vote will be worth 50%, media vote 25% and players vote 25%. The head coaches of the teams will get to choose 7 reserves. The draft details will be announced later this year. All-Star Game starters and captains will be known on Jan. 18 and the reserves will be unveiled on Jan. 23. The All-Star voting will begin on Christmas morning. The 67th All-Star Game will be played at Staples Center on Feb. 18.

This move made by NBA shouldn’t come as any surprise. Besides lack of players’ effort, one could argue that asides LeBron James, there are only a handful of NBA superstars left in the Eastern Conference. Paul George, Carmelo Anthony, Jimmy Butler and Paul Millsap all left the Eastern Conference teams and are now playing in the Western Conference. Although there will still be an even number of players from the each conference, at least both teams competing in the All-Star game will now be competitive. Because, let’s face it, if the old format remained, it wouldn’t be even close.
