Nino Niederreiter signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the Nashville Predators, it was confirmed on Thursday. He joins the team after representing the Carolina Hurricanes last season, scoring 44 points (24 goals, 20 assists) in 75 regular season games as well as five points during 14 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

“Playing against them in the past was always hard, they are a very passionate fan base, very loud. Playing for them this year is going to be a lot of fun, knowing all the teams coming into the building and knowing how tough it is to play there, it is definitely going to be a lot of fun,” Niederreiter remarked following the confirmation of his arrival.

Since being selected for the New York Islanders in the first round of the 2010 NHL Draft as the number five overall pick, Niederreiter has amassed 368 points in 732 regular-season NHL games. Prior to arriving in North Carolina, the 29-year-old player played for the Islanders as well as Minnesota Wild.

According to Niederreiter, the Predators were always near the top of his list of teams that he would consider joining following his tenure with the Hurricanes, particularly due to their goal-scoring strength.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are parting ways with veteran defenseman Ryan McDonagh. The team announced over the weekend that McDonagh was traded to the Nashville Predators in a deal that helps them get some badly-needed salary cap space.

In exchange for McDonagh, the Lightning received defenseman Philippe Myers and forward Grant Mismash.

McDonagh has four years left on the seven-year, $47.25 million contract extension he inked with Tampa Bay in 2018. He also received a no-trade clause at the time but agreed to waive it in order to make the deal go through.

Speaking about the move, general manager Julien BriseBois said that trading McDonagh was tough but necessary to maintain the Lightning’s status as a championship contender.

“It gives us the flexibility to potentially re-sign [winger Ondrej] Palat or [defenseman Jan] Rutta or address holes that need to be filled on the free-agent market or the trade market,” BriseBois said

Ryan McDonagh, who has two All-Star appearances on his resume, joined the Lightning towards the end of the 2017–18 season. His experience and veteran leadership proved crucial in helping propel Tampa Bay to three Stanley Cup Finals trips and two Stanley Cup wins.

“It’s been an incredible five years,” McDonagh said. “Looking forward to utilizing all the experience that I’ve had on the losing side and the winning side to hopefully do something special with the Nashville group.”

The NHL’s Nashville Predators are heading towards a change in ownership.  According to Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams, billionaire businessman Bill Haslam is close to finalizing a deal to purchase the 2017 Stanley Cup finalists.

It is unclear how much Haslam, who also owns the minor league baseball Tennessee Smokies, is going to pay for the Predators.  The franchise is valued at around $680 million, while Haslam’s worth is projected to be $2.3 billion.

Greg Wyshynski of ESPN also reported the deal, but according to his sources, Haslam doesn’t intend to purchase the Predators outright.  He plans to “gradually” buy stakes in the franchise with the goal of having controlling equity down the line.

The Predators last changed ownership in 2007 when the current ownership group paid $193 million for the franchise.  HealthSpring founder Herbert Fritch is considered the face of the group, which has at least 17 other members, according to ESPN.

The Nashville Predators joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 1998.  After early struggles, they became one of the most consistent teams in the league and are currently riding an eight-year playoff streak.  Besides the 2017 Stanley Cup Finals appearance, they also made two conference semi-finals.

Richards had the heart attack on Friday, after which he was promptly transported to the hospital. After spending the weekend in the hospital, he was released on Monday and is currently resting in his home.

The Predators took to social media to keep fans informed on Richards’ progress: “He is expected to make a complete recovery. We will offer an update on his return to the team when we have more information,” the Predators assured fans.

Richards started his NHL coaching career in the 2008-09 season as an assistant coach to the San Jose Sharks. A year later, he landed the job of head coach of the Minnesota Wild, after which he served as head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets for five seasons.

Former Nashville Predators and Colorado Avalanche forward Colin Wilson has announced his retirement from the NHL. Wilson played 11 seasons in the league and was featured in 632 regular-season games.

The 31-year-old veteran made the announcement by releasing a statement via the NHL Players Association.

“It is very bittersweet to retire as I leave my childhood passion behind but look forward to what comes next,” said Wilson.

Wilson previously hinted that he could retire back in October when he detailed his struggle with obsessive-compulsive disorder. He also said at the time that the double hip surgery he underwent in December 2019 could also influence his future in the NHL.

Colin Wilson was drafted seventh overall by the Predators in the 2008 NHL Entry after being named USA Hockey College Player of the Year. Wilson made his NHL debut during the 2009-10 season and developed into a reliable player during his time in Nashville. He delivered several solid seasons in a Predators jersey, including 20 goals and 22 assists in the 2014-15 season.

After eight years with the Predators, Wilson was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in 2017. He played 130 games with the Avalanche in three seasons.

Wilson’s career stats include 113 goals and 173 assists for a total of 286 points. He also had 33 points (17 goals and 16 assists) in 65 playoff games.

Nashville Predators’ center Ryan Johansen used the current suspension of NHL season due to coronavirus pandemic to reflect on his performances in recent years. And it’s safe to say he isn’t satisfied with them.

Predators gave Johansen an eight-year, $64 million contract in 2017, expecting him to be one of the team’s most important players in years to come. While the 27-year-old put up some solid performances since then, he wasn’t impactful in the way everyone expected him to be.

In a recent chat with The Athletic, even Johansen admitted that he isn’t on the level he needs to be.

“With my role on this team and the standard I hold myself to, I need to outperform No. 1 centers on a night-by-night basis,” said Johansen. “I need to show my teammates every night, ‘Hey, I’ve got this guy.’ I’ve got to be one of our horses every night. And when that’s not happening, it’s frustrating.”

Before the season was suspended, Johansen played 68 games, contributing with 14 goals and 22 assists for a total of 36 points. This put him on pace to finish 2019/20 with 43 points, which would be his worst performance since rookie year in seasons he played more than 40 games.

“I’ll be honest, it has chewed me up this year,” he added. “This is an experience I haven’t had since I was a young player, and it ate me up. You’ve got teammates counting on you, you’ve got this big contract, and you’re just trying to find it.”

Ryan Johansen played his best hockey with Columbus Blue Jackets during the 2014/15 NHL season when he had 71 points (26 goals and 45 assists) and earned an All-Star game invite. Since then he hasn’t scored more than 15 goals in a season, although he kept respectable assists numbers.

The NHL Winter Classic featured the hometown Dallas Stars take on the Nashville Predators in a “Southern showdown.” The crowd of 85,360 got an incredible show, not only from the Stars 4-2 win, but from all the festivities that came along with it.

The south, and especially Texas, is known for its love of college football but with the incredible turnout at iconic Cotton Bowl Stadium on the site of the Texas state fair, it showed how much popularity hockey has gained. Jugglers, bull riders, and pig races were just some of the shows put on during the festivities.

The Stars came into the stadium dressed as cowboys, while the Predators dressed in all black as an ode to Johnny Cash. Nashville took a 2-0 lead in the first period on two power-play opportunities, but Dallas came back with four unanswered goals. The crowd erupted with chants of “Dallas! Stars! Dallas! Stars!,” only this time with 3 times as many voices as in their home arena at American Airlines Center.

65,000 seats were planned originally, but with tickets selling out quickly, many more sections were opened. It was the 12th Winter Classic and 2nd in attendance only to the crowd of 105,000 in the 2014 game between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Nashville Predators won’t bring back left winger Scott Hartnell and defenseman Alexei Emelin for the next season according to the team’s general manager David Poile. Hartnell and Emelin are both set to become unrestricted free agents in the offseason.

Scott Hartnell, who previously played for the Predators from 2000 to 2007, rejoined the Predators in 2017 from Columbus Blue Jackets, singing a $1 million deal in the summer. He ended up playing in 62 games, managing 13 goals and 11 assists.

I think he did a really good job for us this year coming in — the leadership, maturity,” – said Poile after announcing the team won’t bring back Hartnell. “He’s always an exciting player both on and off the ice because he does so much physically with how he plays and verbally with how he talks. He was an important player for our team.

After his second stint with the Predators came to an early end, Hartnell said he is thinking about retirement.

I’ll take some time away to think about it,” – he told the Tennessean. “These last couple months, just wondering if I still have it, if I could still skate. I thought I played pretty solid, but your heart’s got to be there too with it, and that passion. I feel like it’s there.

Alexei Emelin also joined the Nashville Predators in 2017 but failed to make a significant impact ending the season with one goal and eight assists.

Predators, who also seen center Mike Fisher retiring on Saturday, are expected to work out an extension with defenseman Ryan Ellis this summer. Ellis, who has a one year left on his five-year, $12.5 million contract, recently said he would like to finish his career with the Predators.

I love it here,” – said Ellis. “My fiancée loves it here. If it was my wish, I’d finish my career here. So we’ll see what happens.

Mike Fisher has enjoyed his retirement for a little less than six months but then the Nashville Predators called, and the 37-year old responded. Fisher decided to come out of retirement on Wednesday and sign again with the team who he captained to the Stanley Cup Final appearance in the last season. Fisher will sign a professional contract with the team before the February 26 trade deadline and has already started practicing with the Predators.

It always kind of bugged me when guys came out of retirement. I didn’t really think it was a possibility,” – he said. “I just thought about the opportunity. How good this team is. About the run last year, and what could be. I got a blessing from family and my wife.

Fisher added that his wife, Grammy Award-winning singer Carrie Underwood, influenced his decision to put the skates back on. Underwood even went on her Twitter profile to express support for her husband’s decision.

Nashville Predators are currently sitting on the second place of Central division, coming off a 1-2 defeat against the Chicago Blackhawks. With Fisher on board, the team will have their already strong group of centers, even more, bolstered, and will add a strong veteran leadership in the locker room.

[We’re] getting a terrific person back in our locker room, and a terrific player,” – said Predators’ coach Peter Laviolette about Fisher’s return.

Mike Fisher contributed to 18 goals and 24 assists in 72 games for Predators in the last season and had four assists in 20 playoff games. Fisher said that team’s potential for another Stanley Cup run played a major factor in his return.

I believe this team is built to win and has a very good chance. So that’s part of the reason I want to come back,” – said Fisher. “But we didn’t win last year, and that was the best part of my career.
