The seven-time All-Star defenseman Shea Weber is unlikely to play in the NHL again. However, that didn’t stop the Montreal Canadiens from trading him to the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday.

In reality, the Golden Knights actually acquired Weber’s contract and have no expectation that the 36-year-old will even suit up for them. As part of the deal, Vegas sent forward Evgenii Dadonov to Montreal.

Weber has been with the Canadiens since 2016 and has served as the team’s captain since 2018. He didn’t play at all during the 2021–22 season due to various injuries and hinted several times that his career was likely over. Montreal placed him on the long-term injured reserve list as a result.

In a statement that followed the news, the Canadiens’ general manager Kent Hughes thanked Weber for “all that he has done for and represented to the Montreal Canadiens.”

“Not only was Shea an exceptional hockey player who played through significant injuries in an attempt to bring the Stanley Cup back to Montreal, but he was also a great leader whose leadership will have a positive impact on our team well beyond his time with us,” Hughes added.

The Golden Knights’ motivation for the deal was to get some badly needed salary-cap relief. This is possible due to relief provided to the teams with players on the long-term injury list.

The Canadiens, on the other hand, get some depth in the forward position with Dadonov. The 33-year-old wrapped up the past season with 20 goals and 23 assists.

The Montreal Canadiens have already confirmed during the offseason that their captain Shea Weber won’t return to the ice in the 2021-22 NHL season due to a number of injuries he is dealing with. But it now seems that Weber’s health status is even worse than it was originally believed.

Speaking with reporters earlier this week, the Canadiens general manager confirmed that Weber’s future as a professional hockey player is in doubt and said it is a “long shot” that the 36-year-old resumes his career in NHL.

“I think it’s a long shot,” Bergevin said. “You never know, but I would say it’s a long shot.”

Weber is reportedly dealing with lingering foot, ankle, thumb, and knee injuries that accumulated over the years. The veteran defenseman managed to play while hurt last season, helping the Canadiens to reach the Stanley Cup Finals, but that apparently came at a great cost.

Without Weber in their lineup, the Canadiens look nothing like the team that was close to winning it all just several months ago. Montreal lost all of their first four games of the 2021-22 season and conceded 15 goals compared to just three scored.

Shea Weber joined the Canadiens ahead of the 2016-17 season after spending the first 11 years of his career with the Nashville panthers. Webber, who collected seven All-Star nods while in the league, has 1,038 career NHL regular-season games in which he scored 224 goals and dished 365 assists.

Montreal Canadiens’ captain Shea Weber still hasn’t made his debut this season, recovering from an arthroscopic procedure that he underwent on his right knee in July. While the initial prognosis said that Weber would be out until late December, now it seems like the 33-year-old defenseman is recovering faster than expected and could return to the ice next week.

Canadiens’ coach Claude Julien spoke with reporters after practice on Thursday and said that Weber might play next Tuesday in the game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

I think the way things are going right now if everything continues to go in the right direction, I think the medical staff and everybody feels that Tuesday could be a possibility for Shea to come back,” – said Julien. “But definitely not on the weekend. This is his first week with some contact and after being out for a year; he needs to spend that whole week doing certain things. So that’s the direction we’re going, and again, that’s as long as things keep going in the right direction, which so far it has been.”

Montreal Canadiens have a solid 11-7-4 record this season, but they have lost two of their last games, so Weber’s veteran presence and experience will definitely help them up to get back on the winning way.

Shea Weber spent most of his time in NHL with Nashville Predators, and it was believed he would finish his career there. Predators had other ideas, and ended up trading him to the Canadiens in exchange for P. K. Subban in 2016. Webber had a successful first season with the team, contributing 17 goals and 42 points overall while earning his third consecutive All-Star appearance. His second season with the organization, however, was marked with injuries and he ended up playing only 26 games.

Webber played a total of 867 games in NHL, in which he scored 189 goals and provided 312 assists.

Montreal Canadiens star defenseman Shea Weber will probably want to forget that 2018 ever happened. After undergoing a left foot surgery in March, the 32-year-old also had to undergo a surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his right knee on Wednesday. He is expected to miss another five to six months recovering from the surgery.

It is important to mention that this procedure could not have been performed earlier due to his recovery to his previous foot surgery. As such, we expect a recovery period from this latest knee surgery to be five to six months,” – said Canadiens’ head physician David Mulder in a statement.

We were very disappointed to learn that this knee injury will extend Shea’s recovery period,” – added Canadiens’ general manager Marc Bergevin. “Unfortunately, this is out of our control and we have to fully trust the medical group in these situations. We are confident that his recovery will go as scheduled and that Shea will return to action as soon as possible.

Shea Weber only managed to play 26 games for the Montreal Canadiens in the last season and had six goals to go with 10 assists.

Canadiens acquired Weber in the summer of 2016 from Nashville Predators, sending defenseman P. K. Subban in exchange. Predators now look like the winners of this trade, since Subban, who is four years younger, has 99 points in 148 games played since then. Weber, on the other side, has 58 points in 104 games.
