Nolan Arenado has been a rare bright spot for the St. Louis Cardinals in an otherwise disappointing 2023 season. Still, many believe that the Cardinals would entertain trade offers for Arenado ahead of the MLB trade deadline, and it seems that the All-Star third baseman wouldn’t be too surprised by such a development.

Speaking with the reporters during the 2023 All-Star event in Seattle, Arenado was asked about the possibility of being traded by the Cardinals this season.

“It is a business, right?” Arenado responded.

The 32-year-old player added that dealing with trade rumors is nothing new to him.

“I’ve been traded once,” Arenado explained. “I think that shocked a lot of people at that time. I guess it doesn’t surprise me anywhere what happens in this game. It would still be surprising seeing some things happen. But I understand there are certain things that probably should.”

Arenado joined the Cardinals in a trade from the Colorado Rockies in 2021. He has since performed on an All-Star level, including a great individual campaign in 2023 that sees him batting .283 with 19 homers and 62 RBIs.

But despite Arenado’s stellar performances, the Cardinals currently find themselves at the bottom of NHL Central with a 38-52 record. Many expect them to be sellers at the trade deadline, moving from some veteran players in attempts to retool their roster for next season.

Earlier this week, the Chicago White Sox made an expected decision to pick up their 2022 club option on the contract of their Craig Kimbrel. But the All-Star reliever isn’t expected to pitch much for the franchise next season despite this.

Several previous reports indicated that the White Sox have every intention to trade Kimbrel after picking his option and the team’s general manager Rick Hahn did nothing to dispute them while chatting with media on Tuesday. While speaking about the 33-year-old, Hahn said that while Chicago views him as “a potentially impactful reliever,” they are open to moving him if the opportunity presents itself.

“What we have to figure out is if it makes the most sense to have Craig in a White Sox uniform going forward or is there a better use of that spot and him perhaps via trade,” Hahn said.

Kimbrel joined the White Sox via trade from the Chicago Cubs midway through the 2021 MLB season with a reputation of being one of the game’s best closers. But considering they already had a star closer in Liam Hendriks, the team opted to use Kimbrel exclusively in the eighth inning. This proved to be a mistake, however, as the veteran struggled to make a meaningful impact.

Serving as a closer for the Cubs in the first part of the 2021 campaign, Kimbrel had a 0.49 ERA with 63 strikeouts. In the White Sox uniform, however, his ERA skyrocketed to 5.09 and he only managed 36 strikeouts.

Hahn acknowledged Kimbrel’s struggles while pointing out that the two-time Reliever of the Year might have more use to some other team.

“It didn’t work out the way we wanted last year so perhaps there’s a better use of his skills than how we were doing it,” he added. “So we have to reconsider his usage with us versus a potential trade.”

Kimbrel, who also played with the Atlanta Braves and the Boston Red Sox among other teams, made eight All-Star selections. He has a career 2.18 ERA with 1,026 strikeouts, while his 372 saves rank 9th on the MLB’s all-time list.

Just one year after signing star starting pitcher Zack Wheeler to a five-year, $118 million free-agent contract, the Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly open to trading him this offseason.

The Phillies were financially hamstrung by the COVID-19-affected 2020 season, which saw them lose $145 million according to sources near the organization.

It was also yet another disappointing season on the field for Philadelphia, as the 2008 World Series champions missed the playoffs for the ninth consecutive season despite a strong roster featuring superstars like Bryce Harper and JT Realmuto.

Dealing Wheeler, who was very good in 2020, posting a 4-2 record with a 2.92 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 71 innings pitched, could be a way for the team to start sizing down financially in an attempt to make up for some of their lost revenue last season.

A move for Wheeler, who is owed $94.4 million over the remaining four years of his contract, could net the Phillies a nice prospect or two but would undoubtedly hurt their chances of competing in the short-term.

There are likely to be many teams interested in the big righty’s services, and if the Phillies are serious about reducing their payroll, letting Wheeler go could make financial sense for them.

With the MLB trade deadline just around the corner, some of the league’s top teams are beginning to show their cards when it comes to their needs and wants before the playoffs start up.

For the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves, reports are that the team is desperate to acquire starting pitching before Monday’s trade deadline comes.

The Braves, who maintain a slim lead over the Miami Marlins and the rest of their division counterparts, have succeeded despite one of the worst starting rotations in the league this season.

After losing star starter Mike Soroka to a torn Achilles tendon and with veteran stalwarts Felix Hernandez and Cole Hamels out, the Braves have struggled to get quality starts from anyone outside of #2 starter Max Fried this season.

Atlanta has limped to a 5.37 starters’ ERA this season, the fifth-worst mark in the league.

Starting pitchers which could reportedly be on the market include the Cleveland Indians’ Mike Clevinger, the San Francisco Giants’ Johnny Cueto and Kevin Gasuman, and the Texas Rangers’ Lance Lynn. With a strong farm system, Atlanta could well swing a deal for at least one arm to help strengthen their rotation come October.

The trade deadline is set for Monday, August 31st at 4 pm Eastern.

With all the injuries plaguing the New York Yankees, the team is forced to get active in the trade market and try to fill out the holes in their roster. According to reports by New York Post, the team’s most recent target is New York Mets’ starting pitcher Steven Matz.

Yankees found themselves lacking pitching depth following James Paxton and Luis Severino’s injuries, as well as Domingo German’s suspension. Mets, on the other hand, have a deep core and probably wouldn’t be affected by Matz’s departure all that much.

Matz played 32 games in 2019, finishing the year with 11-10 record, 4.21 ERA, and 153 strikeouts.

However, it appears that this is far from being a done deal. SNY’s Andy Martino shared on Twitter that the talks are unlikely to have much progress at the time being. He also added that for any deal to take place, Yankees would have to make a massive offer for Mets even to consider a moving Matz.

Steven Matz made his MLB debut in 2015 and has since played 103 games with the Mets, posting a 31–36 career record with 4.05 ERA and 516 strikeouts. Matz currently has one year left on his deal that pays him $5 million annual salary. He is arbitration-eligible in 2021 and is set to become a free agent in 2022.

The Texas Rangers might have been surprising playoff contenders for the first half of the season, but with the team now at 50-50 and 6.5 games out of the Wild Card chase, it appears that they will look to sell some of their top assets.

It appears that lefty starter Mike Minor could be on the move at the trade deadline, who promises to be one of the more promising names available this summer.

Minor, a 31-year-old veteran, has put up a career season for Texas so far in 2019.

The Vanderbilt alum currently sports an 8-5 record along with a stellar 2.86 ERA, which is good for 8th among qualified starters in the MLB.

The New York Yankees have reportedly been considering Minor as a possibility, as they’ve had scouts watching his past outings.

Other teams mentioned as potential fits for Minor include the Philadelphia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves, the team which drafted Minor back in 2009 and with which he spent the first several seasons of his Major League career.

Minor’s current contract runs through the end of the 2020 season. If Texas decides to trade the lefty, they’ll almost certainly get something good in return.

Earlier this week, the Chicago White Sox made an expected decision to pick up their 2022 club option on the contract of their Craig Kimbrel. But the All-Star reliever isn’t expected to pitch much for the franchise next season despite this.
