The Atlanta Braves made one of the most surprising moves of the young 2020 season on Monday, deciding to designate starting pitcher Mike Foltynewicz after a disastrous outing in Tampa.

Foltynewicz, who was a National League All-Star in 2018 and considered one of the Braves’ top pitchers, had dealt with low velocity and shaky effectiveness in Spring Training and Summer Camp alike.

Foltynewicz wasn’t quite as good in 2019, allowing more home runs and a higher ERA, but retaining his spot in the Braves rotation and making two NLDS starts in the Braves’ series loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Those issues came to a head at Tropicana Field on Monday, as Foltynewicz barely hit 90 mph with his once-blazing fastball and surrendered 6 runs (all earned) and 4 walks in only 3.1 innings pitched.

Not only that, but the big right-handed also gave up three home runs and simply couldn’t get outs consistently.

Foltynewicz is out of Minor League options, which means that the Braves will now look for a trade partner for their starter before having to release him. The Boston Red Sox are among the teams which have been suggested as possible landing spots for the pitcher.

The Washington Nationals, who have been looking for position player depth at the beginning of this season, have signed infielder Josh Harrison to a deal for the 2020 season.

The veteran infielder, who spent the 2019 season with the Detroit Tigers, inked a Minor League deal with the Philadelphia Phillies over the offseason but was granted his release earlier this month.

Harrison, an NL All-Star during his tenure with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2014 and 2017, played in only 36 games last season before suffering a season-ending hamstring injury in May. He batted .175 with only one home run in limited action.

Harrison should provide Nationals manager Davey Martinez with an important boost of versatility on the infield and plenty of MLB experience. While he hasn’t been healthy or productive during the last two seasons, the Nats expect that he will play a key role as a bench contributor this year.

The Cincinnati native is expected to spell veteran infielders Asdrubal Cabrera and Starlin Castro at third and second base, respectively, as well as serving as a bench bat in late game situations.

After passing COVID-19 tests and a physical examination, Harrison will be available for Washington for their series against the Toronto Blue Jays this week.

After a highly disappointing first four months to the 2019 season, the Atlanta Braves decided to cut bait on starting pitcher Kevin Gasuman.

Acquired by Atlanta at last year’s MLB Trade Deadline, Gausman hasn’t been able to find success this season. He has posted a bloated 6.19 ERA in 17 starts for the Braves this year, who decided over the weekend that they had had enough.

Fortunately for Gausman, after being let go by the Braves, the Cincinnati Reds were quick in picking up the righty starter, hoping that he’ll go back to the effective form he showed over the better part of six seasons with the Baltimore Orioles.

Gausman owns a career 4.30 ERA and a 47-61 career record. Known for his sinking fastball and his deadly split-finger pitch, he struggled for the Braves this season after struggling with his other pitches and giving up home runs.

Now, the Reds will look to see if Gausman fan steps into their rotation and become a key piece of their team going forward. They have added two new rotation members over the pay week after picking up Gausman on waivers and trading for starting pitcher Trevor Bauer.

Gausman is set to make his Cincinnati debut at some point this week.
