The annual event of the summer in the baseball world was held on Tuesday night as the American League faced off against the National League in the MLB All-Star Game.

This year’s edition was held on the banks of Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio, where the weather gods blessed Progressive Field and the event with perfect 75 degree and sunny weather.

For the seventh consecutive year, the AL recorded a victory over their interleague rivals, beating the NL by a 4-3 final score.

The night was defined by strong pitching performance, as both team’s staffs combined to allow only 7 runs and record 23 strikeouts.

Fittingly, Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Shane Bieber, a late injury replacement on the American League squad, was named the game’s Most Valuable Player after a perfect fifth inning in which he recorded strikeouts of Willson Contreras, Ketel Marte, and Ronald Acuña.

Two hitters went yard on the night, with Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon and Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo each recording a long ball.

The exhibition game, which no longer has any bearing on home-field advantage for the World Series, was a relaxed event which was enjoyed by all of the stars that participated.

Baseball action will kick off again this weekend.

Major League Baseball’s Home Run Derby is always one of the most highly-anticipated events of the summer in sports.

The competition, which puts a group of baseball’s best sluggers in a home run-hitting contest against one another, will take place on Monday night at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

On Thursday, Major League Baseball released the bracket and participants for this year’s contest.

The new bracket-style of the competition pits these competitors against each other in the first round.

• #1 seed Christian Yelich (Brewers) vs. #8 seed Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Blue Jays)
• #4 seed Alex Bergman (Astros) vs. #5 seed Joc Pederson (Dodgers)
• #2 seed Pete Alonso (Mets) vs. #7 seed Carlos Santana (Indians)
• #3 seed Josh Bell (Pirates) vs. #6 seed Ronald Acuña (Braves)

The seeding is based on the number of home runs hit by each player in the regular season. The current MLB home run leader with 31, 2018 NL MVP Christian Yelich, is the top-seeded hitter in the competition.

Players have 5 minutes in each round to hit as many home runs as they can in each round.

Last year, Bryce Harper took home the trophy at Nationals Park.

This year’s Derby will be held at 8 pm Eastern Time at Progressive Field and will be broadcast on ESPN.

The starting 9 for both the National League and American League teams were announced after fan voting elected the players that will start at each position for both teams.

The leading vote-getters were Angels outfielder Mike Trout, who led the American League and MLB with 993,857 votes, and Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich, who led the National League with 930,577 votes.

The Astros lead all MLB teams with 3 All-Star starters in Alex Bregman, Michael Brantley, and George Springer. The Braves, Yankees, and Cubs tied for second place with two starters each.

The selection process for the game was different this year, with an initial round of fan voting followed by the second round of voting in which the top three vote-getters at each position advanced to compete to become the starter.

It was the first time MLB used this voting process, which led to a 28-hour mad dash on Wednesday and Thursday where fans voted to elect the players that will ultimately start the game.

The All-Star Game will take place on Tuesday, July 9th at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
