Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin would never leave NFL to coach at the college level. And he made sure everyone heard that loud and clear during a press conference on Tuesday.

Tomlin has been linked with a move to college football in recent weeks, with several reports putting him into the mix for vacancies at LSU and USC. This prompted the reporters to ask Tomlin whether there is any truth in these rumors and if he would be interested in taking a job at the college level in the future.

“Hey, guys, I don’t have time for that speculation,” Tomlin said. “I mean, that’s a joke to me. I got one of the best jobs in all of professional sport. Why would I have any interest in coaching college football?”

According to Tomlin, this was the last time that he would address these speculations.

“Never say never, but never. OK?” he added. “Anybody else got any questions about any college jobs. There’s not a booster with a big enough blank check.”

Mike Tomlin started his career in college football, working at WMI, Memphis, Arkansas State, and Cincinnati. He made a transition to NFL in 2001 when he became the defensive backs coach job with Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Tomlin left Tampa after five years to become a defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. He remained at the position for just one year as the Pittsburgh Steelers came calling and offered him to become the franchise’s new head coach in 2007.

Since arriving in Pittsburgh, Tomlin compiled a 154-87-1 head coaching record while leading the Steelers to a Super Bowl XLIII win. He also won seven AFC North titles, made the playoffs nine times, and has never had a losing season.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced on Tuesday that the team will be resting starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for the final game of the regular season.

The Steelers have already clinched the top spot in the AFC North and are playoff-bound, meaning that the results of Sunday’s game won’t change that.

Because of that, the team has decided to give Roethlisberger a break and make sure that he is well-rested and healthy for the playoffs.

Starting for the Steelers on Sunday will be backup Mason Rudolph, who saw significant playing time last year when Roethlisberger was hurt but failed to impress.

The Steelers and Buffalo Bills both have 12-3 records, but the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, have already clinched the top seed in the AFC, giving them home-field advantage and a first-round bye in the playoffs.

The Bills also beat the Steelers in Week 14, which means that they own the tiebreaker and are almost assured the second seed in the AFC.

The Steelers will be playing the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, who should be very happy that Roethlisberger won’t be playing since they need a win if they want to have a chance of qualifying for the playoffs.

If Cleveland beats Pittsburgh, they will be making their first playoff appearance since 2002.

Despite missing the playoffs last season, Pittsburgh Steelers decided to give a vote of confidence to head coach Mike Tomlin by signing him to a contract extension. Steelers announced on Thursday that Tomlin signed a one-year extension, which will keep him with the organization through 2021.

Steelers confirmed the deal on social media but did not disclose the financial terms of the deal per team policy. Tomlin’s previous contract paid him around $7 million annually.

“I am pleased to announce we have extended Mike Tomlin’s contract through the 2021 season,” – said Pittsburgh’s president Art Rooney II in a team statement. “Mike is one of the most successful head coaches in the National Football League, and we are confident in his leadership to continue to lead our team as we pursue our goal of winning another championship.”

With this move, Steelers kept their tradition of having head coaching continuity. Mike Tomlin, who is entering his 13th season with the organization, is only the team’s third head coach in the last 50 years, with Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher being the other two.

Since taking over the Steelers, Tomlin compiled a head coaching record of 125–66–1 while leading the team to two Super Bowl championships and six AFC North Division titles.

“I am very appreciative of this contract extension and opportunity and want to thank Art Rooney II and everyone in the organization for the support in my first 12 seasons,” – said Tomlin. “We have a goal of winning the organization’s seventh Super Bowl championship, and I couldn’t be more excited about this upcoming season.”

During his recent appearance on Fox Sports’ Undisputed, linebacker James Harrison was asked to give his opinion on two of his former coaches; Pittsburgh Steelers’ Mike Tomlin and New England Patriots’ Bill Belichick.

Harrison, who decided to leave the Steelers towards the end of his career and play out his last season with the Pats, said that Tomlin is a good coach that “needs to be a little bit more disciplined.”

Mike Tomlin is good as a head coach,” – said Harrison. “He’s a players’ coach. I think he needs to be a little bit more disciplined.”

Harrison then proceeded on to say that Belichick is “by far” better coach than Tomlin.

The big thing with Belichick is he’s very regimented, he’s disciplined, everyone is going to be on the same page, there’s not going to be anything as far as someone doing their own thing. I think over there [in New England] their whole coaching staff is like that.” – he added.

James Harrison became a member of the Steelers in 2002 when he was signed as an undrafted free agent. During his time with the organization, he won two Super Bowls, had five Pro Bowl selections, two First-Team All-Pro honors and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2008. Harrison is also Steelers’ all-time leader in sacks.

His exit from the organization, however, wasn’t all that great like his time there. Harrison was released in December 2017, after he became displeased with his role on the team. He then joined the Patriots until the end of the season, before announcing his retirement in the offseason.

The memories of 30-9 loss by Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5 of 2017 NFL season are still fresh in the memory of Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. Now the Steelers will face the Jaguars once again on Sunday, this time in AFC divisional round. According to Tomlin, the Jags will see a new team on the opposite side this time.

We’ve evolved since then. They have evolved a lot since then,” – said Tomlin. “(Revisiting that game) is a good physical reference in terms of the matchups. You get to see Calais Campbell versus our people, for example. I think that is the value in it, but … I am sure that they are as different as we are since the last time we’ve seen them.

Many Steeler players wished for a chance to make up against the Jaguars after a heavy loss. They got their wish come true but that, however, might not be a good thing. In Ben Roethlisberger era, the Steelers had a losing record at home field against only two teams in the league. The first is New England Patriots (2-5) and the second are the Jaguars who managed to win four games and lose only one on the Heinz Field. Also, in Week 5’s game against the Jags, Roethlisberger played one of the worst games in his career, throwing five interceptions. Despite all of this, the Steelers will enter the game as the overwhelming favorites.

Tomlin also discussed the Steelers chances of making a deep playoff run, saying the team is only focused on the game ahead of them.

We don’t take it for granted. There are 24 teams on vacation. There are eight teams remaining,” – he said. “It’s great to be within that eight. We are singularly focused on this week, and specifically the journey that is the preparation of this week.
