Broncos Ink Journeyman Tackle Mike Purcell to 3-Year, $14.8 Million Extension

After spending time with five different organizations in the last three years, it looks like veteran tackle Mike Purcell finally found a place he can call home. Denver Broncos announced on Tuesday that they have signed Purcell to a three-year extension that will keep him with the organization through 2023.

Reportedly, Purcell’s new deal is worth $14.8 million with $6.8 million of that coming in guaranteed money. He is currently playing on a $3.259 million second-round tender.

This represents a big success for Purcell, considering that he was thinking about quitting football after being cut by four teams in 2017. However, he persevered and it paid off eventually.

“It’s amazing, a complete blessing, to be sure,” said Purcell after inking the extension. “There are times you end think about hanging it up, it’s time to move on and start a real career … but I’m glad I didn’t.”

Purcell started all four games with Broncos this season and has 13 combined tackles including two tackles for loss and one QB hit. He also recorded his first sack in more than five years in 2020, taking down Pittsburgh Steelers’ signal-caller Ben Roethlisberger in Week 2.

Mike Purcell spent the better part of his early NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers, with whom he signed as an undrafted free agent in 2013. After his contract with the 49ers expired following the 2016 season, Purcell had stints with LA Rams, New England Patriots, and Kansas City Chiefs among other teams, but failed to record a single NFL appearance.

In 2019, Purcell joined Salt Lake Stallions of the Alliance of American Football and put together a string of promising performances that eventually landed him a job with Broncos.
