The Memphis Grizzlies moved on from a franchise icon on Wednesday when they traded point guard Mike Conley Jr. to Utah Jazz after spending the first twelve seasons of career by the Mississippi River.

Conley spent over a decade with the Grizzlies, establishing himself as one of the young franchise’s most iconic figures. He was drafted with the 4th overall pick of the 2007 NBA Draft out of Ohio State and immediately helped to turn around the stagnant franchise.

The 6’1″ point guard immediately became a starter and rewarded Memphis for its confidence in him. Conley averaged 14.9 points per game, 5.7 assists per game, and 3 rebounds per game in his 12 seasons in Memphis. He has been known as a defensive stopper throughout his professional career, accumulating 1.5 steals per game over his tenure with the Grizz.

The team made the playoffs seven times during Conley’s 12 years with the team.

Conley had arguably his best season in 2018-19, averaging 21.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

Utah Jazz will add Conley to a young, talented roster, and many believe that his defense, point guard know-how, and experience will help Utah to become a contender for the NBA title next season. Utah finished 50-32 last season, good for 5th in the West.

They did, however, have to give up Grayson Allen, Kyle Korver, and the 23rd pick in this year’s draft in order to acquire the star.

Now, Memphis will look to continue rebuilding with their new assets, while Utah will try to compete for the crown next year with a shiny new star running the show.

Things are not going too well for Memphis Grizzlies recently. After missing the playoffs last season, they are on the path to do the same this time around, sitting near the bottom of the Western Conference. Now, it appears that the Grizzlies realized they can’t stay competitive in the stacked West and are willing to deal their franchise stars, Marc Gasol and Mike Conley.

According to ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski, Memphis has informed the lest of the league that they will begin listening to trade offers for their two best players until the February 7th trade deadline. Wojnarowski reports that if the duo isn’t dealt by then, the organization will consider the offers in the offseason as well.

Sources around the league say that Memphis Grizzlies’ front office is looking to reshape the roster and build a team around their 2018’s first-round pick Jaren Jackson.

In order to deal Gasol and Conley, Grizzlies will most likely ask a package containing young prospects and draft picks. Also, they would be interested in salary-cap relief kind of deals.

Marc Gasol and Mike Conley played an instrumental role in Memphis’ success in the past years, which saw them making seven straight playoff appearances until the last season. They have also played one Western Conference Finals and had two conference semifinals during that period.

Gasol has a year and a half left on his contract, but he has a $25.5 million player option for 2019-20, which gives him an opportunity to become a free agent this summer. Conley has a year more on his contract but also owns a player option for 2020-21 season.
