Pitcher Mike Clevinger resigned with San Diego Padres on Monday, inking a two-year deal with the franchise. However, Padres will not be able to count on a 29-year-old right-hander next season as he is set to undergo a Tommy John surgery.

Padres confirmed the news on Monday, adding that Clevinger’s new deal replaces his arbitration eligibility and comes with deferments and performance bonuses. While the organization didn’t disclose the financial terms of the agreement, multiple reports say that the contract comes with a base value of $11.5 million.

Padres acquired Mike Clevinger from Cleveland Indians ahead of the trade deadline, hoping his arm could help them embark on a deep playoff run. Clevinger ended up delivering during the regular season, going 2-1 with 2.84 ERA and 19 strikeouts in four starts, but failed to be a factor during the postseason struggling with “elbow impingement”.

Despite this, and the fact that Clevinger won’t be able to contribute in 2021, both sides wanted to stay together and hope to run it back a year from now.

“He kind of fell in love with the city and the team, and he wants to be here,” said the team’s general manager A.J. Preller. “I think everybody kind of looked at today as a common sense standpoint: This is what’s important to the Padres, this is what’s important to Mike, and we wind up with a two-year deal.”

After starting pitcher Mike Clevinger missed the Padres’ Wild Card Series matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals due to arm discomfort, he was cleared for action for the NL Division Series matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night.

However, after pitching just one inning in Game 1 of the matchup, Clevinger was forced to leave early after experiencing even more arm troubles.

The Padres’ big trade deadline acquisition, who came over from the Cleveland Indians, was expected to anchor San Diego’s playoff rotation as they look to make a splash in the playoffs.

However, after exiting Game 1 early, it appears that Clevinger probably won’t be able to even return to pitch again in the playoffs.

Clevinger threw just 24 pitches in his team’s 5-1 loss in Game 1, walking three batters and striking out one. After he threw a 91 mph fastball and a 77 mph slider for the first two pitches in the second inning, coaches came and removed him from the game.

The team has not released a diagnosis for what exactly is troubling Clevinger’s pitching arm, but it was certainly enough to make the ace look completely out of whack on Tuesday.

The Padres will now look to other rotation options as they look to come back and win their NLDS series against their rivals after going down 1-0.

San Diego Padres’ hopes for having right-hander Mike Clevinger on their disposal during the playoffs are getting slimmer by day. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Clevinger won’t play in the NL wild-card series against St. Louis Cardinals and might also miss the rest of Padres’ postseason run.

Clevinger hasn’t pitched since September 23, when he left the game against LA Angels after just 12 pitches due to elbow and arm issues. The 29-year-old player made his way back to the bullpen since, but it appears that he still isn’t fit enough to pitch in the postseason.

Padres brought in Mike Clevinger from Cleveland Indians just before the trade deadline, hoping he can fuel the team to a deep playoff run. Clevinger had several promising games during the regular season since arriving in San Diego, posting a 2-1 record with 2.84 ERA and 19 strikeouts in four starts. However, it appears his contributions will end here, at least when it comes to 2020.

Besides Clevinger, Padres might also be without No.2 pitcher Dinelson Lamet for the Cardinals’ series. Lamet has been dealing with biceps tightness since Friday and is listed questionable for the next couple of games.

In Clevinger’s absence, Padres turned to Chris Paddack as a starter in Game 1 against the Cardinals. If Lamet is not available for Game 2, Zach Davies is expected to fill in for him.
