The injury problems continue to mount for the Denver Nuggets. Already down several important players, including star guard Jamal Murray, the Nuggets are now facing the possibility of being without their standout forward Michael Porter Jr. for a prolonged period of time.

Porter has been sidelined for a while now, making his last appearance in a 95-94 win over the Houston Rockets in early November. The team didn’t share any info about the 23-year-old’s absence since then except to confirm that the player is dealing with a back injury.

Porter’s condition, however, is a lot more serious than the Nuggets are willing to admit, according to The Denver Post‘s Mike Singer. In a recent piece, Singer reported that Porter has a nerve issue in his back and that there is a real chance he’ll be out for the remainder of the 2021-22 NBA season.

Denver’s head coach Mike Malone previously confirmed that Porter is currently away from the team and is getting treatment on his back. Reportedly, the Nuggets are willing to wait for a few weeks to see whether Porter’s condition will improve, but surgery remains a realistic option.

If the Nuggets decide to take the surgery route, that would be the third back procedure for Porter. He had his first one while at college and was forced to undergo a second one during his rookie year in NBA.

Michael Porter Jr. has been one of Denver’s best players in 2020-21, averaging 19.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. This prompted the franchise to lock him on a max rookie extension that will reportedly pay him $172 million over five years. This season, however, Porter’s output has been modest, and he only had 9.9 points on average throughout the nine games he played.

Despite being the 14th overall pick in 2018 NBA Draft, Denver Nuggets’ Michael Porter Jr. is still to play his first NBA game. Porter had to undergo a back surgery shortly after the draft, which sidelined him for the entire season. It seems, however, that’s all behind him now as he recently told reporters that he was cleared to play basketball again and will participate in this year’s NBA Summer League.

“Yea I can’t wait to get back out there,” – Porter said, according to Nuggets’ official website. “Nothing will compare to being out there for the first time in a real game. This team has a lot of weapons already, but I think I can be a versatile guy that does a lot of different things on the court and be a shot maker.”

Porter also said that he is feeling good now and “ready to play.”

“I feel so good,” – he added. “I’ve worked so hard every day with these guys, and I feel like I’m a better player than I’ve ever been. “I just want to show that I’m back, feeling good, and ready to play.”

Regarded as one of the best young prospects in the nation coming out of high school, Michael Porter Jr. decided to play college basketball at Missouri. He, however, ended up suffering a lower back injury in the season opener and only managed to return towards the end of the season when he played two games.

Despite his obvious talent, most NBA teams had concerns over Porter’s long-term health which caused him to slip in the draft. Nuggets decided to take a gamble on him, however, and drafted him with the 14th overall pick.

Denver Nuggets rookie forward Michael Porter Jr. told ESPN on Monday that he is finally pain-free after having second back surgery and looking to fully recover by the start of the 2018-19 NBA season.

Considered possibly the most talented player in 2018 NBA Draft, Porter Jr. slipped all the way to 14th selection since the teams had concerns over his back problems. Majority of these concerns came over the fact that the 20-year-old only played three games in his freshman season at Missouri due to back problems.

After Nuggets drafted him, the team discussed the possibility of sitting him for a year, but it looks like Michael Porter Jr has other plans.

I don’t have a date but I’m hoping to be back for the beginning of the year. Gotta heal up, but I feel great,” –said Porter. “I’m able to get on the court a little bit right now, do some different things. But my rehab has definitely been very conservative. They’re really taking it easy with me, being patient with me.

Michael Porter Jr. came from high school as the top-rated basketball prospect in the nation and was widely considered to be the first overall pick in the 2018 draft. Still, after hurting his back in the first half of his debut for Missouri Tigers, NBA teams began having concerns about his health.

Before the draft, he was still projected to land somewhere between 6th and 8th pick, but teams decided not to gamble on him. Nuggets took the opposite approach, and if Porter Jr. manages to stay healthy, they got themselves a real steal.

One of the top basketball prospects in the class of 2017, Missouri freshman Michael Porter Jr., will miss the rest of the season after he undergoes a lower back surgery. Porter Jr. will have a procedure called microdiscectomy performed in Dallas and will recover for three or four months. Before the injury, Porter Jr. was projected to be a lottery pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, with some analysts considering him to be worthy of a top overall pick. The injury doesn’t only lower his draft stocks but also represents a significant blow for Missouri program which had high hopes following Porter Jr.’s arrival.

I really appreciate the support of my family and the Mizzou Men’s Basketball program as I begin this process,” – Porter said in a statement. “I’m thankful for all the kind words and messages I’ve received from fans. Those mean a lot to me. I cannot wait to be completely healthy and playing the game I love, once again.

Being one of the high school top overall recruits, Michael Porter Jr. originally committed to the University of Washington. After his father Michael Porter Sr. was hired an assistant coach for the University of Missouri, Porter Jr. decomited to Washington and joined Missouri.

With Porter Jr., who averaged 36.2 points and 13.6 rebounds per game in his senior year at high school, Missouri hoped that their basketball program will head for revival and could attract more talent. Now, with this injury, Porter Jr.’s college basketball career might be over before it even begun. It is likely that he will still declare himself eligible for NBA Draft, despite not playing in his freshman season at college. There is a glimpse of hope for Missouri, however, since Porter Jr. said before the injury that he isn’t definitely set on leaving college after just one year.
