All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson remains a free agent, but it’s not because of lack of offers. It’s probably because those offers are not particularly enticing. 

MLB Network’s Jon Morosi recently reported that the Miami Marlins stepped in with an offer for Anderson and are willing to make him their primary shortstop.

USA Today’s MLB Insider Bob Nightengale later discussed Anderson’s free agency during an appearance on the Foul Territory podcast and offered some insights as to why the veteran is yet to entertain Marlin’s offer. According to Nightengale, Miami is only willing to offer Anderson a base salary of $2 million.

“I think Tim Anderson’s contract offer from the Marlins is about $2 million. He was making about $14-$15 million with the White Sox, so I’m sure he wants closer to $10 million,” Nightengale noted.

Tim Anderson was an All-Star with the Chicago White Sox in 2021 and 2022 but ended up enduring a rough 2023 season. After missing time with a left knee injury early in the campaign, Anderson struggled to replicate his prior form. He finished the season with a batting average of .245 while hitting only one home run and equaling his career-lowest 25 RBIs. This prompted the White Sox to decline their $14 million option on his contract and send him to free agency.

The Miami Marlins are adding some badly needed batting to their clubhouse. The team just announced they acquired All-Star second baseman Luis Arraez in a trade with the Minnesota Twins.

Arraez comes to Miami after his best individual season in his pro career. He hit .316 with career-high eight homers and 49 RBIs en route to winning the 2022 American League batting champion title and making his first All-Star.

In order to get Arraez, the Marlins had to pay somewhat of a steep price. They gave up talented pitcher Pablo Lopez, who went 10-10 with a 3.75 ERA and 174 strikeouts in 2022, alongside two highly-regarded prospects in shortstop Jose Salas and outfielder Byron Chouri.

After the move was made official, the Marlins general manager Kim Ng said the team’s primary goal was to add offense this offseason and that Arraez checks that box. 

“We’ve talked about it quite often, wanting to add offense this offseason,” Ng said about the move. “We’re willing to trade some of our pitching to do it. What we get in Luis Arraez is a left-handed, very good hitter.”

For the Twins, trading Arraez was a way to boost their rotation. Lopez is expected to immediately become one of their top pitchers while they hope that at least one of Salas and Chouri will pan out.

Veteran shortstop Miguel Rojas is extending his stay with the Miami Marlins through the 2023 MLB season. The franchise confirmed the news on Thursday, announcing that Rojas inked a new two-year deal. He will reportedly earn $5 million per season.

According to ESPN, Rojas initiated the extension talks after the 2021 campaign wrapped up by informing the front office that he wants to continue playing for the Marlins moving forward. From that point on, the two sides easily worked out the details.

Since arriving in Miami in 2015, Rojas established himself as one of the team leaders and a valuable player on the field. He not only emerged as the Marlins’ everyday choice on shortstop but also provided covers for all four positions in the infield. The 32-year-old even served as player-manager for the franchise in season finales in the past two seasons.

Rojas, who is now the franchise’s longest-tenured player on the roster, also deserved a new deal by playing on a high level in recent years. He finished the 2021 MLB campaign with a .265 batting average while hitting nine homers and adding 48 RBIs.

“Miguel embodies a lot of the things that we want as Marlins,” Miami general manager Kim Ng said. “On the field, the consummate professional. Defensively, extremely sure-handed, a great stabilizer. In terms of a leader, there’s no one who shows more leadership skills out on that field than Miguel Rojas, as well as in the clubhouse.”

The Miami Marlins have decided to designate their starting pitcher Jose Urena for assignment, ending the stint of the team’s longest-tenured player.

Urena had been a part of the Marlins franchise since signing as an international free agent in 2009. He made his debut with the Major League team for the first time in 2015 and has served as a rotation stalwart since then.

The 2018 and 2019 Opening Day starter for the Marlins, however, disappointed last season and didn’t improve this year, leading Miami to make the decision to cut him loose.

Urena’s 2020 ERA, 5.40, was even worse than the 5.21 mark he posted last season. The 29-year-old had trouble missing bats and finding the strike zone in 2020, striking out a mere 15 and walking 13 in 5 starts.

The Dominican righty will now either be traded to another team, be claimed on waivers by another club, or hit free agency.

He is set to be owed between $4 million and $5 million in arbitration this season if he’s claimed on waivers, which would make him a relatively expensive option for a player whose ERA has grown steadily over the past two seasons.

Expect news about Urena’s next destination over the next few weeks.

Ng, who spent the past ten seasons working for Major League Baseball as its senior vice president of baseball operations, will re-join the club foray and look to lead the Marlins forward and build on their 2020 playoff berth.

The Indiana native has ample experience in professional baseball, having worked for the past three decades in the game. She started out with the Chicago White Sox, where she worked in various positions from 1990 to 1996.

After this, Ng joined the New York Yankees at the age of 28 where she worked as assistant general manager. She was the youngest person to hold this title in the game at the time.

Ng then joined the Los Angeles Dodgers in the same capacity from 2002 to 2011, when she made the transition to the league office.

Ng will now look to guide the Marlins into a new era under owner Derek Jeter and build on the progress the team made in 2020 and the ample collection of young talent it has.

It’s a groundbreaking moment for the league, the Marlins, and Ng, who is now the first woman to hold such a high title in major North American professional sports.

New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, acquired in a blockbuster trade with the Miami Marlins in December 2017, has teased Yankees fans with massive home runs and some huge performances since joining the team.

Despite missing almost the entirety of 2019 with a biceps strain and a knee injury, Stanton was able to contribute a bit more to the Yankees’ success in 2020, including six home runs in the playoffs.

However, due to the uncertainty surrounding the market and his health, Stanton has decided not to exercise the opt-out clause in his massive contract which would have made him a free agent this winter.

The burly outfielder, who has 7 more years and $218 million left on his deal, decided that his current deal was better than anything else that he would have gotten on the free-agent market.

Stanton is owed $29 million in 2021 and 2022, $32 million from 2023 to 2025, $29 million in 2026, and $25 million in 2027. His contract then includes one more club option for 2028, which would pay him $25 million and includes a $10 million buyout.

Stanton, who will remain under his contract until he is at least 38 years old, will look to stay on the field and contribute big home runs for the perennial contenders under his massive contract.

The Miami Marlins took a surprising Game 1 Wild Card Series victory over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Wednesday, but their win was not without a little bit of bad news.

Star outfielder Starling Marte, who was acquired in a trade-deadline deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks back in July, was struck on the hand with a pitch in the ninth inning of the game and has suffered a fracture of his left hand.

Marte, who went 2 for 4 with a double, a single, and a run in yesterday’s game, was plunked by Cubs reliever Dan Winkler with a 92 mile per hour fastball. He immediately exited the game after slamming his helmet on the ground in pain and frustration.

After the game, the team announced that he has suffered a non-displaced fifth metacarpal fracture in his left hand. While this injury would normally require time to be missed, there is reportedly some hope that Marte will be able to continue playing through the injury.

Marte, who batted .281 with 6 home runs and 27 RBI this season, is a crucial part of Miami’s lineup and is a necessary piece for the team if they want to advance past the Cubs and further into the playoffs.

The Atlanta Braves went into their Wednesday night match with the Miami Marlins looking to avoid a series sweep. They certainly did that and set a new National League process in the record.

The Braves annihilated their NL East rivals by a 29-9 final score at Truist Park, setting a National League record for runs scored by a team in one game.

Things didn’t look great for the Braves early, as they went down 2-0 in the first inning after starter Tommy Milone gave up a pair of runs.

They exploded, however, in the second inning with an 11-spot on the scoreboard. The Braves got home runs from Travis d’Arnaud, Adam Duvall, and Ozzie Albies in an outburst that put the game out of reach.

They kept scoring, however, as Freddie Freeman added a two-run homer the next inning and Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a three-run bomb in the fifth.

Adam Duvall had a record-setting night, as he joined Acuna with a three-run homer in the fifth and then hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to push the lead to 29-9.

Duvall finished the night with three home runs and 9 RBI, tying a Braves record for the most runs batted in in a single game.

Atlanta moved to 25-18 on the season with their win, and they now hold a 2-game lead over the Phillies in the NL East.

The Miami Marlins surprised the baseball world on Monday just before the trade deadline, acquiring star outfielder Starling Marte in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Marte, a longtime fixture in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ outfield, joined Arizona over the winter after a trade took him to the desert. Despite spending only half a season with Arizona, he’s already on his way across the country again to South Florida.

The Dominican outfielder played only 16 games with Arizona this season, in which he hit .311 with 2 home runs and 5 stolen bases. After finding themselves out of the playoff picture and with only a $12.5 million club option left on his contract, they simply decided to move on despite his good work.

Arizona’s loss is Miami’s gain, as the team will acquire a center fielder who will help them make the push for their first playoff appearance since 2016. The Marlins currently find themselves at 15-15 and just on the edge of the expanded playoff picture, and Marte will certainly help them during the stretch run.

The Marlins’ newest acquisition will head to the Dbacks in exchange for lefty starter Caleb Smith as well as pitching prospects Humerto Mejia and Julio Frias.

On Monday, after those figures ballooned to over 15 players and staff members, the team’s Monday game against the Baltimore Orioles was postponed.

Just a day later, Major League Baseball made the decision to postpone all of the team’s games through Sunday in order to prevent the spread of the disease and allow players and coaches to recover.

The Marlins, who opened their season with a weekend series in Philadelphia, got word of the first positive tests on Saturday and then learned later that the virus had spread throughout their team.

The league had no option but to suspend the team’s travel, activity, and games in order to protect other teams and players, despite the vast majority of players being asymptomatic.

The league has yet to announce how it plans to make up the Marlins’ games in the future, but this development is certain to cause a logistical nightmare for the league, which opted not to go with a “bubble” approach.

Expect the league to provide another update on the situation later this week.
