Miami Marlins decided to part ways with pitcher Kyle Barraclough, one of their best relievers, by trading him to the Washington Nationals. The Marlins received international slot value in exchange.

Both teams confirmed the deal on their social media.

Kyle Barraclough made his debut in the majors for Miami Marlins in 2015 and went on to play 227 games, having a career record of 15-12 with 3.21 ERA. Although Barraclough had flashes of excellent play in 2018, being named NL reliever of the month in June, he struggled later in the season which caused him to lose the job as Marlins’ closer. The 28-year-old finished the season with a 1-6 record, 4.20 ERA and 60 strikeouts.

During his four years with the Marlins, Barraclough had respectable numbers, going 15-12 and having 3.21 ERA, which makes him a great addition for Nationals’ depleted bullpen. Washington parted ways with Shawn Kelley and Brandon Kintzle late in the season, while closer Sean Doolittle and right-hander Kelvin Herrera struggled with injuries.

Miami Marlins, on the other side, will use this deal as a boost in their attempts to acquire top international prospect Victor Victor Mesa, the highly rated Cuban outfielder who recently tried out for Major League Baseball teams. While Marlins are considered slight favorites, they will face big competition for Mesa in Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays.

After refusing trades to St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants, outfielder Giancarlo Stanton waived his no-trade clause in favor of the New York Yankees. Miami Marlins traded Stanton to the Yankees in exchange for Dominican second baseman Starlin Castro and two minor leaguers, pitcher Jorge Guzman and infielder Jose Devers.

According to Stanton, his motivation for accepting the trade to the Yankees was the team’s young and balanced core.

They strike from everywhere, and they’re well balanced, and they’re hungry,“- Stanton said on Monday during his introductory news conference. “The city’s been waiting for another World Series and a playoff run, and they got close enough this year. But hopefully, with my addition, we’re going to advance and be a better team.

Marlins were trying to offload Stanton for some time now, in order to start with the rebuild that was announced after the team was taken over by a new ownership led which included former Yankee Derek Jeter. This proved to be a tough deal to make, since there weren’t many teams that were willing to take Stanton’s 13-year, $325 million contract which he signed in 2014. Besides this, Stanton wasn’t eager to accept the trade to just any team and had a shortlist that included Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees.

I had no feeling about trading him to the Yankees,“- said Jeter after the trade. “We wanted to get the best deal. Contrary to what people believe, we were not stuck with this deal. This was the best deal out of the three for us. My feeling was to try to make the Miami Marlins organization better, and that was the No. 1 priority.

With Stanton as part of their roster, Yankees are now among the favorites to collect the World Series next season. As for Marlins, their fans will have to watch some pretty bad games until things get better.

Miami Marlins are cleaning the house, but they may have trouble moving their All-Star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton because of his no-trade clause. The St. Louis Cardinals have released a statement on Friday, saying that they had a deal to acquire Stanton from the Marlins but the player declined the move.

We felt this was a great landing spot for him, but it was not meant to be,” – said Cardinals president John Mozeliak. Cardinals chairman and CEO Bill DeWitt Jr. added: “While we are disappointed in his decision, we will continue to make every effort to improve our club for the upcoming season.

San Francisco Giants also released a statement and said they have tried to land Stanton and failed.

Our agreement with the Marlins to acquire Giancarlo Stanton subject to his waiving of the no-trade clause will not move forward and it is our understanding that the Marlins and Stanton are exploring other options,” – said the Giants in a media release.

Under the new ownership, led by Derek Jeter, the Marlins are trying to make moves in order to clear big contracts off their books. On Thursday, the team managed to move Dee Gordon to the Seattle Mariners, to whom they owed $37 million through 2020 season. They were trying to find a landing spot for Stanton and his guaranteed $295 million contracts for more than a month, but the player is willing to waive his no-trade clause for a limited number of teams. There are reports that Stanton would consider moves to Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees.

Giancarlo Stanton made his debut for the Marlins in 2010, earning the All-Rookie Team honors at the end of the season. He finished the 2011 season with 56 career home runs, becoming the third player to achieve that before his 22nd birthday in the last 40 years. After All-Star selections in 2012 and 2014, the Marlins signed Stanton to a 13 year, $325 million worth deal which was the richest total dollar value contract in team sports history. At the end of the 2017 season, he was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player. Stanton currently has 960 hits and 267 home runs in his MLB career.

Miami Marlins and Seattle Mariners announced a trade on Thursday involving second baseman Dee Gordon. The Marlins will send Gordon and international slot money to Mariners while getting minor leagues Robert Dugger, Nick Neidert and Christopher Torres in exchange. According to the reports, the international slot money received by Mariners is worth $1 million.

Dee provides us with a dynamic presence at the top of our lineup,” – said Mariners General Manager Jerry Dipoto about the team’s newest acquisition. “He’s a two-time All-Star and former National League batting champion who is electric on the basepaths, having already won three stolen base titles. His athleticism will be an asset both in our lineup and in the middle of our outfield for several seasons to come.

Since the second base is taken by Robinson Cano and Jean Segura is at shortstop, Gordon will play center field for the Mariners. This was confirmed by Dipoto, who also added that the team looks at acquisition of Gordon as a long-term move.

Although Gordon spent three seasons in Miami, it was expected that he will be traded by the Marlins for cost-cutting purposes imposed by the new ownership.

Son of Major League pitcher and three times All-Star Tom Gordon, Dee Gordon didn’t start playing baseball until he got to high-school. After being drafted in the fourth round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Gordon stayed in the minors until 2011. After making his debut in the majors in June 2011, he went on to have a strong rookie season and was selected to the Topps All-Star Rookie team. Despite making the All-Star selection in 2014, Gordon was traded by the Dodgers to the Marlins in a trade involving Austin Barnes, and Enrique Hernández. In 2015 he made the All-Star selection once again, while also winning multiple awards including the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards. Gordon led the league in stolen bases in 2014,2015 and 2017.
