Mexico is set to appoint Diego Cocca as the new coach of the men’s national football team, sources confirmed on Wednesday. An announcement by the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) is expected to be made on Thursday.

FMF has been engaged in talks with Mexican Liga MX club Tigres over the hiring of Cocca in an agreement that would see the Argentinian coach leave for free if the national team signed him. Cocca was appointed Tigres’ head coach in November.

Cocca became the FMF’s preferred candidate for the role after undergoing interviews with Mexico national teams executive director Rodrigo Ares de Parga, sporting director Jaime Ordiales, and a newly-formed Liga MX committee. Following this hiring process, he was selected over Pachuca’s Guillermo Almada for the role. Other candidates who were previously considered include Marcelo Bielsa, Miguel “Piojo” Herrera, and Guillermo Almada.

The Argentinian manager has previously coached clubs in his home nation of Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico, where he won the 2021 Apertura Liga MX title with Atlas before winning the 2022 Clausura Liga MX title the following season.

The United States Men’s National Team tried and tried until the end, but they came up just short of defending their Gold Cup title after losing 1-0 to Mexico at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sunday night.

The American men, who won the last edition of the tournament in 2017 with a 2-1 triumph over Jamaica, weren’t able to defend their title due to Mexico’s strong defense and goalkeeping.

The USMNT came out strong in the first half, creating several chances in the first 45 minutes of the match. Mexico keeper Guillermo Ochoa held his ground, though, preventing any of the Yankees’ chances from being converted.

The Americans went to the locker room at the half feeling unlucky not to be leading, but the momentum changed after the second half began.

Mexico began putting more and more pressure on the USMNT defense, creating several goal chances, keeping Zack Steffen busy.

After pushing hard for nearly 30 minutes, Mexico finally broke through when Wolves forward Raul Jimenez found LA Galaxy midfielder Jonathan dos Santos with a pretty backheel pass in the area. Dos Santos converted, giving Mexico a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

When the final whistle blew, El Tri claimed their 11th Gold Cup title since the competition’s inauguration in 1963.

The USMNT tried their best, but Mexico deservingly won the championship and staked their claim and CONCACAF’s strongest side.

Golden Boy Promotion’s Oscar De La Hoya is threatening that Canelo Alvarez will not fight against GGG on September 15th.

De La Hoya has suggested that the Mexican could end up fighting against Spike O’Sullivan rather than Golovkin.

A fight against O’Sullivan would likely struggle to sell more than 250,000 views and should be an easy win for Canelo. On the other hand, a fight between Canelo and GGG would easily attract more than 1.5 million viewers due to the fact that both fighters are considered to be the best of this generation.

Last September, the two fighters fought to a controversial draw which sold 1.3 million buyouts. The two were meant to have a rematch on May 5th, however, Canelo had to pull out after he tested positive for the banned substance Clenbuterol.

The fight was supposed to be split 65-35 in Canelo’s favor.

Golovkin should not be accepting anything less than 50-50. He is a respected fighter and Canelo was the reason why the first fight did not go ahead so he should be the person who makes a sacrifice.
