Running back Melvin Gordon made a surprising decision to leave Los Angeles Chargers this offseason and join Denver Broncos. According to Gordon, this was the right move for him, as Broncos fit better with his playing style.

Gordon made an appearance on Rapsheet + Friends Podcast on Tuesday and said that he felt like he couldn’t be the best version of himself with the Chargers.

“It really didn’t play out to my strengths, especially the first couple years there,” said Gordon. “I kind of just had to adjust and make it work. It kind of wasn’t a system built for me.”

The 27-year-old believes things will be different with Broncos, with whom he inked a two-year, $16 million contract in March.

“I feel like Denver kinda runs my style of football, and I think it’s a great fit,” he added.

Despite feeling unutilized by Chargers, Melvin Gordon saw plenty of success while in Los Angeles. In five years, he made two Pro Bowls while rushing for 4,240 and 36 touchdowns.

Gordon was also a factor in the passing game, getting 224 receptions for 1,873 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Los Angeles Chargers are getting one of their most important playmakers just in time to help them overcome a bad start of the season. Pro Bowl running back Melvin Gordon ended his holdout on Thursday and decided to be on the team’s disposal for the rest of 2019.

Gordon previously missed the team’s training camp and first three weeks of the regular season, holding out in an attempt to get a new contract. Although this still hasn’t happened, the 26-year-old decided to join the team in order to further showcase his ability and value to the team ahead of the next year when he will become a free agent.

Chargers confirmed Gordon’s return on their social media.

While Melvin Gordon has missed all of the season activities and reportedly isn’t in the football shape, he might still see the field in Week 4 game against Miami Dolphins according to head coach Antony Lynn.

“I’ve said all along there’s a chance,” – said Lynn on Friday. “He’s looked fine. He’s in good shape, but he hasn’t been practicing football, so obviously, he’s not ready to go back in there and carry the load right now but you never know, he may have to.”

Gordon himself wouldn’t mind playing.

“We do what we gotta do to win,” – Gordon told reporters. “For the most part, I think I’ll be alright.”

Gordon is currently in the final year of his rookie deal that pays him $5.6 million in base salary. He is reportedly asking to get around $13-$14 million annually for his new deal, which would make him among the highest-paid RBs in the league. Chargers, on the other hand, are only willing to go as high as $10 million.

Star running back Melvin Gordon’s time with the Chargers is reportedly coming to an end after the player’s agent asked for a trade away from Los Angeles.

Gordon and the Chargers have been involved in a contract dispute throughout this offseason. The running back is in the last season of his contract with the franchise and had reportedly been looking for a raise.

With Chargers GM Tom Telesco reportedly unwilling to give Gordon the raise and extension that he’s after, Gordon and his agent Damarius Bilbo have decided that it’s better to simply look for another team.

It still remains to be seen if Telesco and the Chargers are willing and able to swing a deal for the two-time Pro Bowler.

Gordon, a first-round draft pick by the then San Diego Chargers in 2015, has excelled as one of the league’s top running backs since debuting in the NFL. He was named to the AFC Pro Bowl roster in 2016 and last season. A pass-catching threat out of the backfield, Gordon rushed for 885 yards and caught 50 balls for 490 yards, accumulating 14 total touchdowns for the Chargers last season.

Perhaps there is still time for the Chargers and Gordon to mend their broken relationship and keep the unhappy running back in LA, but it seems less and less likely with every day that passes.
