Mauricio Pochettino’s era at Paris Saint-Germain is officially over. The Ligue 1 champions confirmed Pochettino’s departure on Tuesday while announcing Christophe Galtier as their new manager.

Galtier, who coached Nice to fifth place in the domestic league last season, will join on a two-year deal.

“I appreciate the responsibility that I have so that PSG can have a great season,” said Galtier at his introductory press conference. “I have been getting ready for it. If I have accepted his job, it is because I am capable of it. But we have to do it all together.”

The news is far from a surprise as this move has been expected for some time now. Despite winning Ligue 1 in 2021-22, Pochettino failed to make the noise in UEFA Champions League and missed out on the domestic cup. This was deemed a failure in the eyes of PSG owners, and they felt the change was needed if they wanted to capture the elusive UCL trophy.

Hiring Christophe Galtier is certainly an unconventional replacement, considering there were more reputable managers available. However, the Frenchman isn’t without his qualities. After all, he won the Ligue 1 with Lille in 2020-21, which was the only time in the past five seasons that a club besides PSG did it.

Galtier is an ex-defender who played professionally with Marseille, Lille, and Toulouse, among other clubs. He had his longest managerial stint with Saint-ร‰tienne, where he spent eight seasons between 2009 and 2017. During that time, he led the club to seven consecutive top 10 finishes in the domestic league.

Winning the Ligue 1 title with 15 points advantage didn’t help Mauricio Pochettino to keep his job as Paris Saint-Germain manager. According to multiple reports, the French club has decided to fire Pochettino and enter the 2022-23 season with a new face on the bench.

PSG has been rumored to go in this direction in the past several weeks, but the final decision was only made on Wednesday morning, according to Julien Laurens of ESPN. However, the Ligue 1 side still hasn’t decided on Pochettino’s successor and has several names on the list.

The hiring process is expected to be led by new sporting director Luis Campos. Sources close to the club say Campos’ favorite is Christophe Galtier, who did a great job with Lille and Nice in recent years. However, the club’s brass is still hoping Zinedine Zidane changes his mind and considers taking the job.

Mauricio Pochettino, who played in Paris in the early 2000s, took over as Paris Saint-Germain boss from Thomas Tuchel midway through the 2020-21 season. Under Pochettino, PSG won Coupe de France but failed to make up the lost ground in the domestic league title race.

Things looked a lot better in Ligue 1 this past season, as PSG comfortably regained the title with just four losses throughout the campaign. However, they once again failed to make a mark in the UEFA Champions League, where they were eliminated by Real Madrid in the Round of 16 despite having a lead after the first leg. The UCL failure was the thing that most likely sealed Pochettino’s fate.

Paris Saint-Germain isn’t dominating Ligue 1 this season, and manager Thomas Tuchel will be the one to pay the price. According to ESPN, PSG informed Tuchel that his services are no longer needed on Thursday.

However, the managerial vacancy on the French team won’t be open for too long with the club reportedly already agreeing to terms with former Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino. The two sides have been reportedly negotiating for the past two weeks.

Tuchel was on the hot seat last season but was granted more time after PSG’s good performances in Europe that saw them reach UEFA Champions League Finals for the first time in club history. However, the club’s struggles in 2020-21 prompted the Paris front office to make a change.

PSG is currently third in the domestic competition, having uncharacteristically lost four games early in the season. They managed to make it to the UCL knockout stage but needed a late surge and help from other clubs to do so.

According to reports, Tuchel also has a bad relationship with sporting director Leonardo, which speeded up the process of his firing.

PSG now hopes that Mauricio Pochettino can take the club to the next level and get them the elusive Champions League trophy the club so desperately wants. It may help that Pochettino has a history with the club, having played there between 2001 and 2003.

Pochettino was unemployed since November 2019, having been fired by Tottenham after a series of bad results in the Premier League. He spent five and a half years with the Spurs, leading the club to a UEFA Champions League Finals in 2018-19.
