The Philadelphia Eagles are making a big shakeup in an attempt to fix their underperforming defense. According to multiple reports, the Eagles will have former Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia take over the playcalling role on defense.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the move doesn’t strip defensive coordinator Sean Desai from his position. Desai will still serve as DC but will move to the coaches’ booth while Patricia will be on the sidelines.

Patricia joined the Eagles in the offseason after serving as an offensive play caller and offensive line coach for the New England Patriots in 2022. His official title is senior defensive assistant.

Patricia previously served as the Pats’ defensive coordinator between 2012 and 2017. He was hired to be the new head coach of the Lions in 2018 but was fired midway through his third season on the job. His head coaching record with Detroit was 13-29-1.

The Eagles desperately need a spark on the defensive side of the ball. Despite being tied for the best record in the NFC with 10-3, Philly is in the lower half of defensive rankings for the 2023 season. They are 22nd in yards allowed per game (353.9 yards), while only three teams allowed more touchdowns than the 39 TDs the Eagles allowed.

After another struggling season, Detroit Lions decided to start fresh next year. The organization announced over the weekend that they have fired head coach Matt Patricia and general manager, Bob Quinn.

The decision came after the Lions’ disappointing 41-25 loss against the Houston Texans on Thanksgiving that saw the team fall to a 4-7 record in 2020. This ensures that Detroit will finish the season with a losing record for the third consecutive year.

Lions also announced that offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell would take over the team on an interim basis, while the front-office committee will handle the general manager duties until the end of the campaign.

“It was a hard decision because they are both terrific people and worked very hard and tirelessly for this organization,” the team owner Sheila Ford Hamp explained the decision. “It just clearly wasn’t working. It wasn’t what we had hoped for when we hired them.”

The dismissal of Patricia and Quinn doesn’t come as a surprise, especially since both were on the hot seat entering the season. The organization gave a vote of confidence to the duo after the 3-12 finish in 2019 but underlined that they are expecting to “play meaningful games in December.” The consecutive blowout defeats against Carolina Panthers and Texans ensured that wouldn’t happen, prompting Hemp to make this decision.

Matt Patricia, who was a longtime defensive coordinator for New England Patriots, was hired as Detroit Lions’ head coach ahead of the 2018 NFL season. Lions previously fired Jim Caldwell despite back-to-back 9-7 seasons, saying at the time that the team doesn’t look ready to take a step further under him.

The decision didn’t do any well to Detroit, as Patricia ended up going 13-29-1 during his tenure.

Bob Quinn, on the other hand, took the GM post in 2016. He oversaw only one playoff appearance since then, with the team posting a 31-43-1 record while he was at the helm.

With just two weeks left in the regular season, most NFL teams already lost their chances to make the postseason and are probably thinking about coaching changes. It was widely presumed that Detroit Lions would be one of them, but it seems like the organization is willing to give head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn another chance.

Lions’ owner Martha Ford spoke about the team’s plans for 2020 with reporters on Tuesday and confirmed that Patricia and Quinn will remain at their positions next year. Ford expects, however, that the duo repays her this faith with success.

“We expect to be a playoff contender and those are our expectations,” –said Ford. “Which we’ve expressed to both Bob and to Matt.”

Detroit Lions decided to fire head coach Jim Caldwell following the end of 2017, despite the fact that he led the team to the postseason two times and only once had a losing record during his four years with the team. Since taking over the team in 2018, Patricia, who previously served as New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator, failed to bring a significant improvement.

Under Patricia, Lions have been even worse, finishing the last season with 6-10 record. In 2019, they are certain to have a worse record, as they are currently 3-10-1 with just two games left to play.

“I appreciate Mrs. Ford and her family so much and Rod [Wood] and Bob and everything that we’re trying to do here and what we’re trying to accomplish, where we’re trying to lead this organization,” said Patricia when he found out that he will remain in Detroit in 2020. “It’s a process that we’re trying to go through to get the team to a highly competitive level that can sustain and be consistent and handle the ebbs and flows of an NFL season.

Jim Caldwell led the Detroit Lions to two consecutive 9-7 seasons, but that wasn’t enough for him to keep his job. His successor, Matt Patricia, who was supposed to lift the team to contending level, ended up making a step back with the Lions, currently sitting at 5-10 record. While some suggested that this will mean a swift exit from Detroit for former New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator, Patricia is “pretty confident” he will keep his job after the end of 2018.

I’m pretty confident,” – said Patricia when asked whether he will be with Lions in 2019. “Everything for me, right now, is just keep moving forward and getting ready for the game this weekend. Like I said, I meet with Mrs. Ford every week, so they’ve been great. Her and her family have been great.

It would make sense for the Detroit Lions to give Matt Patricia another year, considering the fact that the organization gave both him and general manager Bob Quinn five-year contracts in the offseason with an idea to provide the franchise with some stability. This doesn’t mean, however, that there won’t be some changes in the coaching staff.

Sources close to the team say that the Lions will most likely look to change their offensive coordinator. Detroit’s offense performed poorly under current OC Jim Bob Cooter in 2018, and currently, rank 24th in yards and 26th in points while quarterback Matthew Stafford is on pace to have his worst season in five years. Cooter was part of Caldwell’s coaching staff, but Patricia decided to keep him around when he took charge.
