The Buffalo Bills’ All-Pro linebacker Matt Milano suffered severe leg and knee injuries in a 25-20 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday and will miss the remainder of the 2023 season.

Milano was hurt in the first quarter after trying to pressure Jags’ quarterback Trevor Lawrence and ending in a pile of players from both teams. Reportedly, he suffered a leg fracture, and the Bills also fear he might have torn his ACL.

The loss of Milano will be a tough blow for the Bills, considering his status as one of the best linebackers in the league. The 29-year-old player had his best campaign as a pro in 2022, contributing 99 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 11 pass deflections, three interceptions, and one defensive touchdown. He ended up earning the First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.

Milano continued in the same fashion in 2023, recording 30 tackles, two interceptions, and one forced fumble before going down with the injury.

The Bills have been unfortunate with the injuries at the start of the season. They have lost star corner Tre’Davious White to a season-ending ACL injury, while defensive tackle DaQuan Jones is dealing with a pec injury and could also miss significant time.

Buffalo is currently second in the AFC East with a 3-2 record. They are playing the New York Giants in Week 6.

The Buffalo Bills managed to keep their starting linebacker Matt Milano from hitting the free-agent market next week.

The team announced on Thursday that Milano agreed to an extension that will keep him in Buffalo for the next four years. The team didn’t disclose the financial terms of the agreement, but the 26-year-old player will reportedly earn $44 million with $24 million of it guaranteed.

Milano’s extension comes as a bit of a surprise as previous reports indicated that Buffalo was ready to let the player test free agency. The Bills had troubles with salary cap space and believed they couldn’t afford to pay his market value.

The opportunity to keep Milano around came after the front office made a number of moves in recent days to create additional space. They agreed to restructure contracts with several players, including defensive tackle Vernon Butler, while also releasing defensive end Quinton Jefferson and wideout John Brown.

Matt Milano, who was a fifth-round pick in 2017, has been a reliable piece of Buffalo’s defense in recent years. He played 54 games in NFL, showing an impressive ability in tight end coverage while also being a capable run stopper.

Milano totaled 273 tackles, 6 sacks, 25 QB hits, 21 pass deflections, and five interceptions as a pro.
