The Los Angeles Rams are bringing in some competition for their struggling kicker Lucas Havrisik. The team announced on Wednesday that they have signed veteran Mason Crosby to their practice squad.

Crosby spent all of his 16 years in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers before leaving the franchise in March after his contract expired. The 39-year-old player has yet to play this season despite having worked out with multiple teams, including the New Orleans Saints and New York Giants.

The Rams started their 2023 season with journeyman Brett Maher as their starting kicker. Maher was released after missing two field goals and one extra point in a Week 7 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The LA team then picked up Havrisik, who was previously with the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad.

Havrisik also proved to be unreliable, missing three field goals and one PAT in five games he played so far. This included a missed 43-yarder in last week’s win over the Cleveland Browns.

Mason Crosby has been mostly a reliable kicker over the course of his pro career. He made 81.4% out of his 485 career field goal attempts and has a 97.3% conversion on extra points. Crosby missed four field goals for the Packers in 2022, but three of them were for 50+ yards.

The ball just didn’t want to go in between the uprights in the Week 5 clash between the Green Bay Packers and the Cincinnati Bengals. The teams combined for five field goals, turning the game into an overtime thriller as a result.

The Bengals opened the scoring in the first quarter with a touchdown, but it was the Packers that were ahead 16-14 by the time the first half came to an end. Cincinnati struggled to score for the better part of the second period, while Green Bay added two field goals to make it 22-14, and it seemed they were in for a comfortable win.

But the Bengals’ offense led by quarterback Joe Burrow woke up early in the fourth quarter and managed to tie the game. Joe Mixon rushed for a touchdown while Burrow connected with Tee Higgins for a successful two-point conversion. And then the kickers took the stage.

On their following possession, the Packers attempted a go-ahead field goal from 36 yards with 2:12 left on the clock, but Mason Crosby surprisingly missed the kick. This was Crosby’s first field goal miss after he was good on 29 previous attempts.

The Bengals got the ball back and set up a 57-yard attempt for their kicker Evan McPherson with 26 seconds left in the regulation. Just like Crosby, McPherson missed his attempt as well.

Green Bay started the possession on their own 47-yard line, with QB Aaron Rodgers and wideout Davante Adams connecting for 20-yards on the first play. The Packers turned to Crosby once again, but the 37-year-old star missed once again, this time from 51 yards, as the time run out.

Cincinnati had the first possession in overtime, but Burrow threw a pick on his first pass attempt, turning the ball over to Green Bay deep in the Bengals’ half. The Packers run two plays before deciding to end the game with a 40-yarder that was, you’ve guessed it, not good.

The Bengals then set up a 49-yarder for McPherson, and it seemed that the kick would win it for them. The ball seemed like it was headed straight through the uprights, and McPherson even started to celebrate before realizing he sent it wide to the left.

The vicious circle of missed FGs was broke by the Packers on their next possession, with Crosby redeeming himself and scoring a field goal from 49-yards. The field goal ended the game and gave the Packers a 25-22 win.

Green Bay Packers’ veteran kicker Mason Crosby would like to forget his team’s 31-23 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday. In a game that ended with Lions being eight points up, Crosby missed four field goals and one extra point. This means that the 34-year-old had left 13 points on the table, which would have brought his team a win.

On Sunday, Crosby became the first kicker in NFL since 1980 and Los Angeles Chargers’ Rolf Benirschke to miss four straight FGs. Before this, he was 10 out of 11 in 2018.

Well, obviously shocked; it’s never happened to me,”- said Crosby after the game. “That’s never happened to me. It doesn’t happen. So I’m going to evaluate it but I’m going to [chalk] it up to something that is an anomaly in life that I’ve never even been a part of. So I’m going to evaluate the details like I do every week and move on. Because that one for me is something that I’ve never been a part of and hope to never be part of again.”

Mason Crosby was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the sixth round of the 2007 Draft. He was the NFL leading scorer in his rookie season and went on to win Super Bowl XLV with the Packers in 2011. Through his NFL career, Crosby managed to make 277 field goals with an 80.3 percent success rate.
