The Detroit Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. announced on Tuesday that he will be “stepping away” from the Detroit Lions as he looks to take care of some “personal family matters”. Following his announcement, the Lions confirmed that they had released him from the team; a standard procedure in this situation.

“I just want to say that I have so much love and respect for the Ford Family, the city of Detroit, my teammates and coaches,” Jones stated on social media. “To be brief, I am stepping away from the team to take care of personal family matters. Although this was no easy decision, I cannot be the person/player that I need to be for this team as well as tend to my family from afar.”

Having spent the last two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, this season marked Jones’ return to Detroit. He previously played for the Lions from 2016 until 2020. Over his 12 seasons in the NFL, Jones has amassed 547 receptions for 7,421 yards and 58 touchdowns in 151 games.

Veteran wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. will suit up for the Detroit Lions once again. After spending the past two years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jones decided to reunite with the Lions and inked a one-year deal with the franchise.

Jones will reportedly get a $3 million base salary while getting a chance to earn an additional $2 million in incentives. The 33-year-old player played in 16 games for the Jags last season, catching 46 passes for 529 yards and three touchdowns.

Prior to signing with Jacksonville in 2021, Jones played five years with the Lions and was one of the team’s key receivers. In 69 games with the franchise, which included 67 starts, he made 289 receptions for 4,296 yards and 36 TDs. The former fifth-round pick spent his early NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals.

By getting Jones back in the building, the Lions will boost depth on the wideout position that has taken a hit after DJ Chark left in free agency to play with the Carolina Panthers. Jones is expected to be in contention for the team’s third option on the WR position behind last year’s first-round pick Jameson Williams and standout wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown.

The Detroit Lions will play without wide receiver Marvin Jones and running back Kerryon Johnson after both players suffered knee injuries in the days before Thursday’s game against the Chicago Bears.

With 35 receptions for 508 yards and five touchdowns, Jones has been hugely impactful to the Lions’ defense line this season. Johnson has also racked up some great numbers which leave Detroit vulnerable as they face first-place Chicago Bears.

As a consolation, the Bears also have injury concerns. Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is expected to miss the game after he was injured in his right shoulder on Sunday by Vikings’ safety Harrison Smith. The 24-year-old, is a right-hander, meaning the injury could have affected his performance had the Bears chosen to play him.

Trubisky was drafted just two years ago as a No. 2 pick and has become one of Chicago’s most fierce quarterbacks. The 24-year-old will be in the companionship of teammates Aaron Lynch and Adam Shaheen in the injury reserve. Both Lynch and Shaheen suffered concussions in Sunday’s win over the Vikings.

In New Orleans, the Saints will welcome defense end Marcus Davenport who was out in the last one month with a toe injury as they face the Atlanta Falcons.
