Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant will play in the Canadian Football League next season.

Bryant, who is currently indefinitely suspended by the NFL, signed with the CFL powerhouse Toronto Argonauts. The team confirmed the move on Monday on their social media.

Bryant last played in 2018, when he made eight appearances with the Raiders. He finished the season with 19 catches for 266 yards.

“He fits the mold of what we’re looking for, but he can run, too,” said Toronto coach Ryan Dinwiddie in a statement. “I feel like the talent certainly is there.”

The Canadian Football League canceled its 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic, but competition is expected to resume this season.

Martavis Bryant was the Steelers’ fourth-round pick in 2014. He emerged as a viable No. 3 option during his time in Pittsburgh, but frequent violations of the league’s policies limited his availability.

Bryant was first suspended during his sophomore year in the NFL, missing the first four games of the 2015 season. He was then handed a year-long suspension in 2016.

After being conditionally reinstated ahead of the 2017 NFL season, Bryant managed to stay out of trouble for some time. However, violation of the terms of his conditional reinstatement got him an indefinite suspension in December 2018, and he’s unsuccessfully tried to return to the league since.

Bryant’s career stats as a pro include 145 receptions for 2,183 yards and 17 touchdowns.

After releasing wide receiver Martavis Bryant on September 1st, Oakland Raiders have now changed their minds about the 26-year-old and signed him to a one-year deal on Wednesday. Raiders decided to give a contract to Bryant even though he is facing a year-long suspension by NFL for violation the league’s substance abuse policy.

I am just thankful and happy and excited for this weekend and the opportunity to take care of my family; it will not be taken for granted,” – Bryant told ESPN‘s Jeremy Fowler, confirming the move.

Oakland Raiders acquired Martavis Bryant from the Pittsburgh Steelers in April 2018, sending a 2018 third-round pick in the opposite direction. Bryant, however, didn’t have a strong showing during the training camp and reportedly struggled with learning the playbook and being at practice. This caused the Raiders to release him during the 53-man roster cuts.

We expected more from him,”- said Raiders’ head coach Jon Gruden at the time. “Perhaps we get Martavis again next year, and we can get the best out of him.”

Gruden decided to give Martavis Bryant one more chance in order to try and boost his underperforming receiving core. Raiders’ leading receivers Amari Cooper and Jordy Nelson had a poor showing in 13-33 home loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Monday, so Bryant could give the team a badly needed depth considering his talent.

Martavis Bryant entered the league in 2014 when he was selected in the fourth round of the draft by the Steelers. After two successful years, in which he combined 76 catches for 1,315 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns, Bryant was suspended for the entire 2016 season. He bounced back in 2017, contributing with 50 catches for 603 yards and three touchdowns.

Still, it looks like Bryant’s problems are not behind him since he reportedly violated NFL’s drug policy during this offseason. The league is reviewing the matter and could make a decision in the several upcoming days.

Oakland Raiders had a busy day on Thursday. They first traded away the 10th overall pick in 2018 NFL draft to Arizona Cardinals in exchange for the 15th overall pick and two third-round picks. Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie used the 15th pick to select UCLA’s tackle Kolton Mille and then sent one-third rounder (79th) to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for wide receiver Martavis Bryant.

With Martavis, it [was] all about trying to use that pick and get another player,” – explained McKenzie. “It’s like drafting a player. We feel like we drafted Martavis Bryant.”

With Bryant on the team, Raiders have now surrounded their quarterback Derek Carr with a deep wide receiver core which also features f Amari Cooper and Jordy Nelson.

He’s ideal, what you’re looking for in a wide receiver,” – McKenzie added. “He can play big. He can play fast, and he makes plays. We think he can be a dynamic receiver for Derek [Carr].

Martavis Bryant had lots of ups and downs with the Steelers organization, who selected him in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. The 26-year-old had issues with his behavior off the field and even received a season-long suspension in 2016 for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Despite this, he started 2017 season as the Steelers’ starting wide receiver alongside Antonio Brown. Halfway through the season, Bryant publicly expressed his desire to be traded, but the team denied the request. He finished the regular season with 50 receptions, 603 yards, and 3 touchdowns.

I’ll always have love for the Steelers,” – said Bryant after being traded to the Raiders. “There was no bitterness. It’s just a business situation. [If I wasn’t traded] I was prepared to be back and be a good teammate.

According to NFL.com, Martavis Bryant has been cleared to participate in regular-season practices and games by NFL. Steelers’ wide receiver has missed the entire 2016 campaign after violating league’s policy on substances of abuse on several occasions. He was conditionally reinstated in April, with the league asking him to attend mandatory counseling sessions. He obviously took this seriously, since as of Friday, he will be able to participate in all preseason activities including games and practices after missing two weeks of training camp.

Bryant has been handed at least one-year suspension in March 2016 and he decided not to appeal against it at the time. The odds didn’t look good for Bryant to make the comeback. From 2010 to 2015, 11 NFL players received at least one year suspension for violating league’s policy on substances of abuse. Only Johnny Jolly managed to make a comeback and play in the NFL once again.

Martavis Bryant was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 4th round of 2014 NFL Draft as the 118th overall pick. He immediately picked up Pittsburgh Steelers Rookie of the Year award, 26 receptions, 549 receiving yards, and 8 touchdowns in 10 games played. The following season, he played 11 games having 50 receptions, 765 receiving yards, and 6 touchdowns. After missing 2016 season completely, Bryant will surely be eager to make his mark in 2017.

Return of Bryant isn’t the only good news for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The reports are in that Le’Veon Bell visited the team’s facilities on Friday which probably means he will sing the $12.1 million franchise tender. Steelers and Bell were in conversations about the long-term deal for a while, but they couldn’t find an agreement. Now, arguably the best running back in the NFL will have another season to prove he is worth the big money.
