The New Orleans Saints have acquired veteran running back Mark Ingram via trade with the Houston Texans, according to multiple reports. The move reunites Ingram with the franchise with whom he spent the first eight years of his pro career.

The terms of the trade remain unknown, but the deal reportedly includes a swap of late-round draft picks.

Ingram started all seven games of the 2021 NFL season for Houston and lead the team with 294 rushing yards and a touchdown. The only obvious reason why the Texans would opt to deal him is that they wanted to do him a favor and send him someplace where he can play competitive football.

The Saints, on the other hand, badly needed a second running back. The team previously released veteran Latavius Murray due to financial reasons, while second-year back Tony Jones Jr. is currently on the injured reserve. This caused a heavy workload for the Pro Bowler Alvin Kamara, which was something New Orleans knew they couldn’t let continue for too long.

During his first stint with the Saints, Mark Ingram rushed for 6,007 yards and 50 touchdowns while adding 228 catches for 1,598 receiving yards and five scores. He also made two Pro Bowls in New Orleans before leaving the franchise to sign with the Baltimore Ravens.

The Baltimore Ravens made their first major roster move ahead of the 2021 NFL season. According to multiple sources close to the franchise, the Ravens intend to release veteran running back Mark Ingram.

Ingram signed with the Ravens ahead of the 2018 season, inking a three-year, $15 million contract. By moving on from the 31-year-old veteran, Baltimore will free up $5 million in the salary cap.

Ingram confirmed the news on social media, saying his goodbyes to the Ravens and their “first-class organization.”

The move doesn’t come as a surprise, especially since the Ravens didn’t use Ingram all that much lately. He didn’t take the field since Week 12 while missing both postseason games.

Ingram was a Pro Bowler in 2019 but failed to maintain the same level of play in 2020. He had a career-low 72 rushes while running for just 299 yards and two scores.

While he’s not needed in Baltimore anymore, there is no doubt that Mark Ingram should be able to find a prominent role on another team. The three-time Pro Bowl selectee has always had a strong ability to pick up yards throughout heavy contact while also being able to contribute in the passing game.

Ingram’s career stats include 7,324 rushing yards and 62 touchdowns alongside 260 catches for 1,895 yards.
