After striking out on Japanese star pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the New York Yankees are shoring up their rotation with All-Star right-hander Marcus Stroman.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, Stroman will join the Yankees on a two-year, $37 million deal. The agreement between the two sides comes with a vesting player option.

Stroman confirmed the move on social media, posting a mockup photo of himself in a Yankees jersey alongside the caption: “There’s no place like home.” The 23-year-old player is a New York native who grew up in Medford, Long Island.

Stroman spent the past two seasons with the Chicago Cubs. In 2023, he had a phenomenal start to the campaign, earning his second All-Star nod. However, injury struggles limited him to just six starts in the second half of the season. He ended the season with a 10-9 record, 3.95 ERA, and 119 strikeouts.

Prior to joining the Cubs in 2022, Stroman also played with the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Mets. He won a Gold Glove Award in 2017 and had an All-Star appearance in 2019. His career stats include a 77-76 record, 3.65 ERA, and 1,091 strikeouts.

The Yankees were on the market for a starting pitcher since the start of the offseason. When their pursuit of Yamamoto failed, the New York team turned to reigning NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell. However, they ended up deciding that Snell’s asking price is too high and settled for an impactful veteran in Stroman.

The New York Mets learned on Wednesday that starting pitcher Marcus Stroman will be back for the 2021 season after accepting the team’s $18.9 million qualifying offer.

The diminutive right-handed pitcher was given the qualifying offer by the Mets, which meant that if he were to sign for another team, it would have had to forfeit a first-round draft pick in order to do so.

Instead of taking a risk in what is likely to be a financially-deflated market after the shortened 2020 season, Stroman simply decided to stay in Queens for another year.

Stroman did not play in 2020 after opting out of the season, which was partially due to recovery from a torn calf muscle.

The 2019 AL All-Star was traded from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Mets just before last year’s trade deadline in exchange for a package including Anthony Kay and Simeon Woods Richardson. He finished last season with a 10-13 record but with a sparkling 3.22 ERA.

He impressed during his tenure with the Mets as well, accumulating a 4-2 record and a 3.77 ERA.

Stroman is set to be one of the Mets’ key rotation pieces next year as they look to compete for their first playoff berth since the 2016 season.

The New York Mets’ Marcus Stroman, who was set to join his team’s rotation this seek after recovering from a calf injury, instead elected to sit out the 2020 season due to concerns about COVID-19.

Stroman said, “With all the unknowns and uncertainty due to the pandemic, this is the best decision for me and my family.” He went on to thank the Mets organization for their support and understanding in the matter, which has been a theme throughout the league this season after players have elected to take the season off.

This is the second key Mets’ player to have decided mid-season that he would take off 2020, as Yoenis Cespedes made the same decision last week.

The 29-year-old right-hander, who was acquired in a midseason trade from the Toronto Blue Jays last summer, will end his Mets career after opting out of 2020, as he is set to hit the free agent market this winter.

Stroman, a 2019 AL All-Star and the owner of a career 51-47 record with a 3.76 ERA, was expected to be a major contributor for a Mets rotation which has struggled in his absence.

The New York native will instead focus on getting prepared for free agency this offseason as he looks to keep both he and his family safe from the COVID-19 virus.

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Marcus Stroman might be on the move this summer. The highly regarded right-hander reportedly caught the attention of the New York Yankees, who would like to bring him in before the trade deadline next month.

According to The New York Post‘s Ken Davidoff, Yankees have already started talks with Blue Jays over Stroman, with both sides being interested in getting the deal done.

Stroman has put up a good season so far, playing 14 games in 2019 and having 3.31 ERA alongside 1.32 WHIP and 63 strikeouts. He also earns a team-friendly $7.4 million, which combined with the fact that he is under contract through 2020, makes him an attractive asset.

Making a deal for Marcus Stroman makes sense for both the Blue Jays and the Yankees.

For Blue Jays, this is the moment when they probably can extract the maximum value for Stroman if they don’t want to pay him a big extension next year.

Yankees, on the other hand, are in a desperate need for a rotation piece, as they have been decimated by injuries for the better part of the season. Stroman would provide an immediate boost while also being potentially a significant factor in the postseason.

Stroman’s career highlights include Golden Glove Award in 2017 and World Baseball Classic MVP honor.
