The New York Jets played well in their Thursday Night Football clash against the Indianapolis Colts, but that will hardly give them any comfort considering the game’s outcome. Besides being beaten 30-45, they also lost their free safety Marcus Maye for the season.

The news was confirmed on Friday by the Jets’ head coach Robert Saleh, who revealed that Maye tore his Achilles. The 28-year-old player suffered the injury during a non-contact play in the third quarter of the Colts’ game.

Maye wasn’t the only Jet who went down against the Colts. Starter Mike White had to leave the game in the first quarter after injuring his forearm and didn’t return to the field after. White, however, isn’t facing a significant absence and will most likely be ready for Week 10.

Maye, who entered the season on a franchise tag, enjoyed a solid start of the 2021 campaign before getting hurt. He racked up 46 tackles in just six games while also adding one sack, one QB hit, and two passes defended.

“It’s heartbreaking,” the Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said via ESPN. “He’s the communicator back there. He’s the general.”

The Jets don’t have too many options at safety after losing Maye. With LaMarcus Joyner being also out for the season due to an injury, the team now has to rely heavily on 2020’s third-round pick Ashtyn Davis while hoping they can get some production from veterans Sharrod Neasman and Jarrod Wilson.

It appears that New York Jets safety Marcus Maye doesn’t have a wish for a change of scenery after all. During a recent chat with reporters, Maye dismissed multiple trade rumors that surrounded him in past weeks and said that he wants to be part of the franchise moving on.

Maye is one of the most reliable players the Jets have had in recent years, but despite this, the team failed to reward him with a long-term extension. The 28-year-old player is currently playing on a franchise tag, and many believed that this, alongside the Jets struggles to be competitive, will make him eager to move on. But this couldn’t be farther from the truth, according to Maye.

“They know I want to be here,” Maye said on Thursday when asked about the trade rumors. “They know I’m 100% with my guys.”

“Every time I’m in this building, I’m 100%,” he added. “Every time I’m on the field, I’m 100%. I’m going to be with my guys no matter what.”

It remains to be seen whether the Jets want the same as Marcus Maye. Despite the 2017’s second-round pick’s great performances on the field, the Jets seemed hesitant to meet his asking price in the summer and make him one of the highest-paid players on the position. And nothing indicates that they feel different now.

Maye has been dealing with an ankle injury in 2021 that limited him to just three games this season. Still, he managed to rack up 23 tackles while also having one sack and one pass defended.
