Veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota didn’t like being a backup on the Atlanta Falcons in the final stretch of last season. However, it turns out that he doesn’t mind filling that role for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Mariota agreed to terms with the Eagles, where he’ll serve as Jalen Hurts’ backup. The deal is for one year and $5 million, with the most money Mariota can get being $8 million.

The Eagles were on the market for a backup QB after seeing Gardner Minshew leave in free agency to join the Indianapolis Colts. With Mariota, they are getting more than worthy replacement and a more mobile quarterback that fits their system better.

Marcus Mariota spent the 2022 campaign with the Atlanta Falcons, serving as the team’s starter for the better part of the season. But after the Falcons went 5-8 with Mariota as a starter, head coach Arthur Smith opted to give rookie Desmond Ridder a shot under center. Unpleased with the benching, Mariota ended up staying away from the team and was subsequently released.

Mariota, who previously also played with the Tennessee Titans and the Las Vegas Raiders, has a 34-40 record as a starter in NFL. He completed 62.6 percent of his career passes for 15,656 throwing yards, 92 touchdowns, and 54 interceptions.

Marcus Mariota will man the backup quarterback job for the Las Vegas Raiders for one more season. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Mariota opted against hitting the free agency and will instead take a significant pay cut to stay with the organization.

Mariota signed a two-year, $17.6 million contract with the Raiders last year and was set to count close to $11 million against the cap this season. Considering the lower salary cap in 2021, the Raiders offered the 27-year-old player to take less money or risk being released.

Reportedly, Mariota was initially willing to take the risk but changed his mind after taking a better look at his potential market. The new agreement will earn him $3.5 million guaranteed, although he could push his total earnings to $8 million based on incentives.

It is safe to say that the Raiders got a great deal, maintaining a quality QB that can step in at any moment if something happens to starter Derek Carr. Mariota, on the other hand, gets one more year to rebuild his reputation and possibly a chance to pursue a bigger role in 2022.

Mariota got to play just one game in 2020, stepping in after Carr injured his groin in Week 15 matchup against LA Chargers. He finished the game with 226 passing yards and one passing touchdown while also rushing for 88 yards and one score.

Before joining the Raiders, Mariota spent five years with the Tennessee Titans. He completed 62.9 percent of his passes in Titans’ jersey while throwing for 13,207 yards and 76 TDs.

Marcus Mariota signed with Las Vegas Raiders this offseason in an attempt to resurrect his career after years of underwhelming performances in Tennessee. However, Mariota is aware that he won’t get a shot at starting job easily.

In a recent interview with KHON-TV, Mariota acknowledged that Raiders already have a franchise quarterback in Derek Carr.

“First and foremost, this is Derek’s team, and I understand that,” said Mariota. “I understand that going in. My priority going into free agency was to be a part of a team that I felt could bring out the best in me. ”

According to Mariota, he hopes that the Raiders’ QB room will be supportive of each other and give each player a chance to be the best versions of themselves.

“And I’m going to do my best to support Derek in every possible way that I can, and along with that, I’m just going to try to become the best player that I can be and see where that takes me,” he added.

Marcus Mariota entered the league in 2015 as Tennessee Titans’ second overall pick, but never managed to live up to big expectations that came with the high draft position. Although he led the Titans to a playoff win in 2017, Mariota never settled into his role as the franchise quarterback, and his entire career was marked with inconsistency.

Titans eventually decided to move on from Mariota last season, benching him in favor of Ryan Tannehill in Week 6. Tannehill took over the starting job in Week 7 and ended up leading the Titans to AFC Championship. After the season ended, Tennessee signed Tannehill to a big contract while letting Mariota walked out of the door.

Mariota, who was a Heisman Trophy winner in college, has an NFL career completion percentage of 62.9 to go with 13,207 passing yards. He also threw for 76 touchdowns and 44 interceptions.

Tennessee Titans will exercise the fifth-year option on their starting quarterback Marcus Mariota, keeping him under contract through 2019 season. This was confirmed by Titans’ general manager Jon Robinson on Wednesday.

The plan is over the next couple of days to exercise Marcus Mariota’s fifth-year option,” – Robinson said. “He is an important part of this team, as are a lot of players. We’re excited to have him around here for the next couple of years and hopefully, after the next season we can start to figure something out to keep him around even longer.

This move will give both Titans and Mariota time to work out a long-term extension. Mariota is set to earn $3.73 million in 2018 and $20.922 million in 2019 under his current deal. The priority for the Titans is signing left tackle Taylor Lewan on a long-term deal, considering the fact that he will become a free agent after 2018 season.

Marcus Mariota was selected second overall in the 2015 NFL Draft by Tennessee Titans and went on to set numerous NFL rookie records in his first season. He had even more productive 2016 season, finishing with 3,426 passing yards and 26 touchdowns. The 2017 season saw Mariota leading the Titans to the playoffs for the first time in nine years and to a first playoff win since 2003. Titans finished their 2017 postseason run in the 35–14 loss to New England Patriots, with Mariota ending the game with 254 passing yards and two touchdowns.
