It looks like Bayern Munich won’t be making a change at goalkeeper position at least for several more years. German powerhouse announced on Wednesday that they have signed goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to a contract extension, keeping him with the club at least until 2023.

Bayern acquired talented goalie Alexander Nubel in January from Schalke 04, sparking rumors that the 23-year-old will serve as Neuer’s replacement. However, it appears that the plan is to further develop Nubel and have Neuer mentor him before he’s ready to take over.

“Another big decision for a successful future!”, said in a statement legendary Bayern’s goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, who currently serves as a member of the board. “Manuel Neuer is the captain and one of the most important pillars of our team. He embodies great years of German football, and we’re happy to continue the way of FC Bayern together. This extension is a strong signal.”

Manuel Neuer joined Bayern Munich in 2011, after starting his career with Schalke like Nubel, and has since been regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. During his time with Bayern, Neuer made close to 400 appearances and won 18 trophies, including seven Bundesliga titles and one UEFA Champions League.

Neuer has also been the No.1 choice on the goalkeeper position for Germany’s national team since 2010 and has helped the country win World Cup in 2014.
