The San Antonio Spurs are bringing back another franchise legend on board after previously having Hall of Famer Tim Duncan serving on the team’s coaching staff. This time it’s Manu Ginobili, who will take on the role of “special advisor to basketball operations” for the 2021-22 NBA season, according to the team’s official website.

The Spurs didn’t detail Ginobili’s assignments, but sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that the role is player-centric and focuses on the “development of players on and off the court.”

Reportedly, the Spurs have been trying to convince Ginobili to return to the organization in a non-playing role ever since he retired in 2018. Head coach Gregg Popovich and CEO R.C. Buford appreciate his leadership skills and believe that he could have a big impact on their younger players.

Manu Ginobili is considered to be one of the greatest international players in the NBA’s history. The Argentinian played 16 years in the league, all with the Spurs, and helped the franchise win four NBA titles. Ginobili received two All-Star nods during his career and was named the NBA Sixth Man of the Year.

Ginobili, who had his No. 20 jersey retired by San Antonio, also had impressive basketball success outside the NBA. He was crowned the EuroLeague champion with Virtus Bologna and has won the Olympic gold medal with Argentina in 2004.

After having one of the most storied careers in the franchise’s history, Manu Ginobili’s #20 went into the rafters at the AT&T Center on Thursday night.

In an emotional post-game ceremony after the Spurs’ 116-110 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, Ginobili was immortalized in the franchise’s lore forever.

Ginobili spent his entire career with San Antonio after being drafted in the 2nd round of the 1999 NBA Draft with the 57th overall pick. Ginobili, a native of Argentina, was playing professional basketball in Italy before he made the move to the United States.

The shooting guard spent part of his career as a starter and part of it as a versatile “sixth man.” He won the award for being the NBA’s best bench player in the 2008 season.

In addition, Ginobili was twice named an NBA All Star, in the 2005 and 2011 seasons. He was also named twice to the NBA Third Team All-Pro squad, in 2008 and 2011.

Ginobili retired as a four-time NBA Champion after taking home the crown with San Antonio in the 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014 seasons.

The crafty guard averaged 13.3 points per game, 3.8 assists per game, and 3.5 rebounds per game in a 16-year career.

Now, his #20 will never be worn by another player in San Antonio.

San Antonio Spurs’ Manu Ginobili is ending his NBA career. The 41-year old guard announced the decision on Monday, via post on Twitter.

“Today, with a wide range of feelings, I’m announcing my retirement from basketball.” – wrote Ginobili. “IMMENSE GRATITUDE to everyone (family, friends, teammates, coaches, staff, fans) involved in my life in the last 23 years. It’s been a fabulous journey. Way beyond my wildest dreams.

ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski reported last week that Ginobili was considering retirement and will make his final decision after a meeting with Spurs’ head coach Gregg Popovich. During that time, he was working out regularly at the Spurs’ practice facility. Spurs were hoping that Ginobili might return for one more season, especially since he had a year left on his deal.

Manu Ginobili started his professional basketball career in his native Argentina, before coming to Italy in 1998. In 1999 he was drafted 57th overall by the San Antonio Spurs, but joined the team three years later.

Ginobili went on to play 16 seasons in NBA for the Spurs, winning four NBA titles during that period. Over the course of his time in the league, he averaged 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.3 steals per game.

Many thought that Game 4 of Western Conference finals against Golden State Warriors, was last for Manu Ginobili in the NBA and crowd made sure to thank him properly for everything he has done for San Antonio Spurs. Still, it looks like we are getting more of Manu in Spurs jersey, at least for one more year. The team announced on their Twitter profile that the player signed a new contract and will be back for his 16th season in the NBA.

Although the details of the contract were not made public, ESPN reports that according to their sources, 40-year-old Manu Ginobili signed a 2 year, $5 million deal. If this turns out to be true, we could see Manu playing in the NBA even when he is 42 years old. Although his minutes and production went down in the recent seasons, Ginobili still remains an important player for the Spurs. In Game 3 of last season’s conference finals against the Warriors, Ginobili scored 21 points while also contributing 17 in Game 1.

Ginobili is considered to be one of the best international players in NBA in the recent decades. San Antonio Spurs drafted him as 57th overall pick in the 1999 NBA draft, but he didn’t join the team until 2002. During that time he played in Italy, winning EuroLeague with Virtus Bologna and being named EuroLeague Finals MVP in 2001. Soon after joining the Spurs, Ginobili became a key player for the team. During his time in San Antonio, he won 4 NBA rings, being named NBA All-Star 2 times and was also honored with NBA Sixth Man of the Year award.

After this season, Manu Ginobili will join Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki, John Stockton, Reggie Miller and John Havlicek as the player who played at least 16 seasons and spent his entire NBA career with one team.
