The San Diego Padres announced on Tuesday that their star third baseman Manny Machado underwent elbow surgery to address a lingering extensor tendon issue.

According to the Padres, the procedure is expected to sideline Machado for four to six months. The timeline puts him on schedule to return to action in time for Spring Training.

Machado has been dealing with a right elbow injury for the past two seasons but played through it. However, the issue got worse as the 2023 season was winding down, forcing the Padres to relegate Machado to a designated hitter role.

Machado confirmed in September that the plan is to have the surgery once the team wraps up its 2023 season. The Padres were in the hunt for a playoff spot to the very end of the regular season but ended up finishing with 82-80 and missing out on the last NL wild-card spot.

“We were trying to avoid it as much as we can,” Machado said in September. “But unfortunately [the injury] has just put us in that situation. And you know what? It’s probably going to make me better, going to make us all better. Just get it done, get ready for next year, come back, and be healthy.”

Manny Machado inked an extension with the Padres in the offseason, signing to an 11-year, $350 million deal. He played 138 games in 2023, finishing the campaign with a .258 batting average, 30 homers and 91 RBIs.

The All-Star third-baseman Manny Machado is staying with the San Diego Padres for another decade. Despite saying earlier this month that he would explore free agency after the 2023 MLB season, Machado changed his mind a signed a new extension that ties him with the franchise through 2023.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Machado’s 11-year extension is worth a $350 million contract. This makes him the player with the fourth-largest guaranteed contract in MLB history, following Aaron Judge ($360 million), Mookie Betts ($365 million), and Mike Trout ($426.5 million).

Machado originally inked a 10-year, $300 million deal with the Padres in 2019. Since then, Machado has emerged as the franchise’s best player, earning two All-MLB First Team nods and two All-Star selections. He was particularly stellar this past season when he batted .298 with 32 home runs and 102 RBIs to finish second in NL MVP voting.

Having a contract opt-out after 2023 and seeing the market for free agents grow, Machado prepared to hit the free agency next year in hopes of cashing in on his good form. The Padres, however, didn’t want to let other teams get a chance to make their bids to their star players and made a strong push this season that ended up sealing the deal.

After Machado’s deal, the Padres will now have one of the biggest payrolls in MLB. They gave star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. a 14-year, $340 million deal in 2021 while also signing shortstop Xander Bogaerts to an 11-year, $280 million contract this offseason.

All-Star third baseman Manny Machado won’t see out the 10-year, $300 million deal he signed with the San Diego Padres in 2019. Speaking with the media on Friday, Machado revealed that he intends to opt out of the contract and hit free agency after the 2023 MLB season.

“Obviously, the team knows where I stand, my situation with the opt-out coming,” Machado told the reporters. “I think I’ve expressed that I will be opting out after this year.”

When Machado inked his original contract, it was the second-largest in the entire league and the largest ever given to a free agent. However, the market changed drastically since, and his deal now wouldn’t qualify to even make the top 10.

“Markets change,” he added. “From when I signed five years ago. It’s changed tremendously.

While the opt-out means Machado will walk away from a guaranteed $150 million, the 30-year-old player hopes he will be able to land a much more lucrative contract in free agency. That is more than likely to happen, especially if he continues to play the way he did in 2022.

Machado finished the last season with a .298 batting average, 32 home runs, and 102 RBIs. He finished second in NL MVP voting while also receiving an All-Star nod and being selected to All-MLB First Team.

We are less than a week away from the start of MLB’s Spring Training, but Bryce Harper and Manny Machado are still without a team. Arguably the two most talented players to hit the free-agent market in the last years are reportedly still waiting for the offer in the range of $300 million, one that MLB teams are reluctant to give. But, according to the latest reports, they are getting there.

Several MLB Insiders recently reported that San Diego Padres entered the race for Machado and that they have made him the biggest offer so far. According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, Padres offered $250 million for a period of eight years.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, on the other hand, says that San Diego’s offer is even bigger and that the 26-year-old third baseman could receive $280 million over eight years if he takes the deal

While several other teams are in pursuit for Manny Machado, including New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies, it is believed that only Chicago White Sox have made a legit offer to the player’s agent so far. According to reports, White Sox’ most recent offer was around $175 million and seven years. They thought that with several tweaks, the offer might hold given how passive other teams were. But now that Padres entered the race, Chicago will have to do much better if they want to have any chance to land Machado.

All-Star third baseman Manny Machado is arguably the best available free agent this offseason, and it looks like he just might get the kind of money that proves this.

According to ESPN‘s Buster Olney, the latest big-time offer for Machado came from the Chicago White Sox, who reportedly offered the 26-year-old a seven-year deal, worth around $175 million. This news comes just three days after it was reported that White Sox gave him an eight-year offer.

Despite his talent, there are not many teams that are willing to give Manny Machado the contract he is looking for. Only other MLB team that is seriously engaged in talks with him are Philadelphia Phillies, who still didn’t make a definitive offer according to the sources.

Phillies are also negotiating with an All-Star right fielder Bryce Harper, who won the NL MVP award in 2015 and will sign just one of the two superstars.

In case that Machado’s talks with Philadelphia don’t pan out, Chicago will emerge as a front-favorite for his signature. At the beginning of the free agency, New York Yankees were also interested in his services but decided to back down after realizing they are too far behind with the number they were willing to offer.

Manny Machado spent the second part of 2018 MLB season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, helping the team to reach the World Series, where they lost to Boston Red Sox. He had a batting average of .273, alongside 13 home runs and 42 RBI during that period.

The Chicago White Sox signed pitcher Kelvin Herrera on Monday as they heighten their chase for Manny Machado and Bryce Harper this offseason. Herrera joins Chicago on a 2-year, $18 million deal but could see the deal extended to $27 million should the White Sox sign him for an additional year.

The 29-year-old spend last season in Kansas before being traded to the Washington Nationals midseason. He averaged 1.05 ERA in 25.2 innings for the City Royals but struggled in Washington, averaging 4.34 ERA in 18.2 innings.

Herrera’s career is full of ups and downs. He’s was part of the famous “HDH” bullpen that also included Wade Davis and Greg Holland. The trio helped Kansas City win the World Series. Individually, the Dominican recorded his highest ERA marks (1.41) in Kansas. He also never allowed a home run during the entire regular season.

After wonderful stints between 2014 and 2016, Herrera struggled in 2017. He improved last year before he was traded to the Nationals. The 29-year-old joins Nate Jones and new signing Alex Colome in Washington’s bullpen. He is the favorite to become the closer unless the Nats sign a better pitcher before the end of the offseason.

Free agent shortstop Troy Tulowitzki agreed to a league minimum deal with the New York Yankees on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old missed the intire 2018 season to recover from heel problems but is bouncing back with a new team. The Yankees have been searching for a shortstop ever since Didi Gregorious underwent a Tommy John surgery and they may have the answer to their problems through Troy.

While he will be paid the league minimum of $555,000, the Blue Jays still owe him a lot of money in his $20-million contract. Tulowitzki has always expressed his wish to join the Yankees, noting that Derek Jeter was his idol.

When it comes to delivering, the shortstop produced an OPS+ of 102 with a WAR of 3.4 in 2017. If he delivers the same numbers this year, he will have been a great bargain for the Yankees. New York isn’t done signing players this offseason anyway. They are reportedly interested in Manny Machado but with a high number of infielders, they may slow down their chase on him.

Whichever the case, Tulowitzki is a low-risk high reward deal for the Yankees. He is a five-time All-Star, a two-time Silver Slugger and a two-time Gold Glove Award Winner. He’s proven a worthy player in the past and will probably deliver for the Yankees.

Trade saga surrounding four-time All-Star shortstop Manny Machado is finally over. Baltimore Orioles agreed to send Manny Machado to Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for five Minor League prospects: outfielder Yusniel Diaz, right-hander Dean Kremer, third baseman Rylan Bannon, righty Zach Pop and third baseman Breyvic Valera. The deal was made official on Wednesday night.

We viewed Manny Machado as a big difference-maker,” – said Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi said.

Our first hope is we have a division-winning roster,” – he added. “Any time you have a chance to add an impact player in a tight division race, that’s something you have to look at closely.

Machado is off to a great start of the 2018 season, having 24 homers and 65 RBIs. However, that didn’t help Orioles much since they are currently last in AL East with 28-69 record. Considering the fact that Machado is entering the last year of his deal, Orioles decided to hit the reset button and start rebuilding, unveiling to give him a big extension.

Obviously, it’s a bittersweet day for our organization,”- said Orioles’ executive vice president of baseball operations, Dan Duquette. “We watched Manny grow up in our franchise the past eight years. We all know what an exceptional talent he is, from the great plays that he made to his elite hitting. He’s always going to be an important part of our club’s history.”

We tried to maintain a competitive club this year, and that’s why we resisted the offers we had in the offseason to trade Manny,” – he added. “But when it became obvious that it was time to look to the future, trading Manny is the first step in the plan to rebuild our ballclub.

Manny Machado was drafted by the Orioles in the 2010 MLB Draft as the third overall pick and made his debut in the majors three years later. During his time with the team, he was named All-Star on four occasions, while winning two Gold Glove awards and one Platinum Glove award. Machado’s MLB career stats include .283 batting average, 162 home runs, and 471 RBIs.
