Manchester City added another trophy to close out their spectacular run in 2023. The Premier League side won the Club World Cup title by beating Brazil’s Fluminsense 4-0 in the tournament finals on Friday.

City opened the scoring in the first minute of the match when Argentine striker Julián Álvarez found the net after picking up a deflection from Nathan Ake’s shot in the penalty box. Fluminense’s Nino scored an own goal in the 27th minute to make it 2-0 for City.

Fluminense looked overpowered and incapable of showing any resistance in the second half as well, which City used to run up the score. Phil Foden made it 3-0 in the 72nd minute before Álvarez added his second goal of the match in the 88th minute for a final score of 4-0.

The win over Fluminense gave City its first Club World Cup title in club history. They also won the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League earlier this year.

“I’m very pleased and I would like to say we had the feeling we would close the chapter; we won all the titles, there’s nothing else to win. I had a feeling the job is done, it is over,” said City’s manager Pep Guardiola after winning his 14th trophy since arriving at the club in 2016.

While the red side of Manchester is going through all sorts of drama in recent days, the blue side of the city is busy celebrating the stay of their storied manager Pep Guardiola. Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City just announced that Guardiola inked a new contract that will keep him with the club through the 2024-25 season.

Guardiola’s previous contract was set to expire next summer. Man City now becomes the only club in Spaniard’s career with which he signed three contracts. He left both Barcelona and Bayern Munich after his second contract ran out.

“I am so pleased to be staying at Manchester City for another two years,” Guardiola said in a statement. “I can’t say thank you enough to everyone at the club for trusting me. I am happy and comfortable, and I have everything I need to do my job as best as possible.”

Reportedly, the new contract for Guardiola has been in the making for some time now. While there was no doubt for Manchester City that they wanted to keep their successful manager on board, Guardiola himself needed some time to think things through. Sources close to the manager said that he wanted to make sure the decision to stay in Manchester was right for all parties involved, including his family.

In the end, Guardiola decided he likes the stability and support he receives at Man City too much to just walk away. It also doesn’t hurt that he has some of the best players in the world that can make his vision of soccer a reality on the pitch.

Since arriving in 2016, Guardiola has led City to four Premier League titles and seven cup trophies. However, he never managed to win the Champions League with the club, although many believe that is only a matter of time.

Manchester City announced a big bit of news on Thursday afternoon, revealing that they had agreed to a two-year contract extension with star manager Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola’s previous contract was set to expire after the end of the current season, leaving many to wonder whether or not the former FC Barcelona coach would look to move elsewhere.

An end was put to that speculation with Thursday’s announcement, as the team revealed that Guardiola will stay under contract until the end of the 2022-23 season.

Guardiola took over for Man City prior to the 2016-17 season and has led the club to two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and three EFL Cup wins.

While he has yet to be able to bring Manchester City its first Champions League trophy, the success that Guardiola has enjoyed with the club has led them to continue on the same path for at least the next two and a half seasons.

The Catalonia native expressed confidence in the upcoming years with the club, stating, “I have the desire to help with all the fantastic players we have for the next years, especially for the fans – and we will feel proud of the way we play and the way we win.”

City will look to use the optimism generated from Guardiola’s new deal to shake off a slow start that has them in 10th place in the Premier League 7 matches into the season.
