The New England Patriots announced several roster moves on Tuesday, with the most notable one being the placement of veteran corner Malcolm Butler on the Injured Reserve. According to multiple reports, Butler will be out for the remainder of 2022.

Butler will be joined by fellow corner Joejuan Williams on the IR list, while the team also released punter Jake Julien. Williams, who was the Pats’ second-round selection in 2019, will also miss the season.

New England didn’t disclose the details about Butler’s injury, but sources close to the organization told ESPN that the veteran suffered a hip injury. It is unclear whether the injury took place during a preseason game against the New York Giants last week when Butler played double-digit snaps and recorded a fumble recovery.

The 32-year-old signed a two-year deal with the Patriots back in March. He previously retired prior to the 2021 season.

Malcolm Butler is fan-favorite in New England thanks to his heroics in Super Bowl XLIX against the Seattle Seahawks. The Patriots were leading 28-24 in the final 30 seconds of the game, but the Seahawks had a second down on the one-yard line. Then-Seattle QB Russell Wilson threw the ball to wide receiver Ricardo Lockette in the end zone, but Butler predicted the pass and picked him off. The interception sealed the win for the Pats.

Butler, who won two Super Bowls with New England, also played with the Tennessee Titans and the Arizona Cardinals. He was selected to Pro Bowl in 2015 and made the Second-Team All-Pro in 2016.

The New England Patriots are welcoming back one of their Super Bowl heroes. Veteran corner Malcolm Butler, who sealed the Super Bowl XLIX win for the Pats with a goal-line interception, agreed to contract with the franchise on Wednesday.

Butler will reportedly receive a two-year deal that will pay him $9 million in 2022 and 2023. The news was confirmed by the player’s agent Derek Simpson.

Butler started the 2021 offseason with the Arizona Cardinals but never suited up for the franchise. Instead, he decided to retire due to “personal reasons” and was placed on the reserve/retired list. The Cardinals released the 32-year-old player from the list in February, which paved the way for his return to New England.

The Patriots will be glad to have Bulter on board for 2022 since they are expected to have thinner secondary compared to the last year. A big reason for this is the departure of standout corner J.C. Jackson, who left in free agency to sign with the Los Angeles Chargers. Butler could serve as a straight replacement for Jackson although it is not excluded that the Pats make other moves.

Malcolm Butler entered the league in 2014 after signing with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent out of West Alabama. Butler spent four years with the Pats, winning two Super Bowl rings and becoming a Pro Bowl player. He left New England during the 2018 offseason to sign a multi-year deal with the Tennessee Titans.

Butler’s NFL career stats include 406 tackles, 3.0 sacks, 17 interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns.

One of the storylines surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles upsetting the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII was the benching of Pro Bowl corner Malcolm Butler. Despite starting through playoffs for the Pats and being healthy, Butler didn’t play on defense against the Eagles and was only part of the special teams.

The reasons why Butler was benched remained a mystery in the following years, as neither the player nor Patriots head coach Bill Belichick spoke publicly about the subject since. But they aren’t a mystery anymore, thanks to ESPN senior writer Seth Wickersham.

In his recently published book It’s Better to Be Feared: The New England Patriots Dynasty and the Pursuit of Greatness, Wickersham claims that Butler wasn’t a contributor in Super Bowl LII because of an argument with Matt Patricia. The latter was New England’s defensive coordinator at the time.

According to the book, the two men “traded heated words at practice” in the days leading to the game with Patricia accusing Butler of “lack of effort” during the exchange. Following the argument, Butler was buried on the Pats’ depth chart and given just one snap on special teams against the Eagles.

Butler, who won two Super Bowls with New England in previous years, would leave the franchise a month later after signing a big-time contract with the Tennessee Titans. Butler entered the 2021 NFL offseason with the Arizona Cardinals but decided to retire before the season started.

The Tennessee Titans decided to release veteran corner Malcolm Butler. The news was confirmed to ESPN by player agent Derek Simpson.

Butler had two years remaining on his five-year, $61.25 million contract he signed back in 2018. Because only $30 million of the sum was guaranteed, the Titans are set to save around $10 million in cap space by moving on from the 31-year-old veteran.

In 2020, Butler started all 16 games and contributed with career-high 100 tackles and four interceptions to go with 14 passes defended. Overall, he had 201 tackles, 33 passes defended, nine picks, and one sack during his time in Tennessee.

Despite Butler’s solid production, the Titans opted to go with younger and more importantly cheaper options at CB position. The 2017 No. 18 pick Adoree Jackson and 2020’s second-round selection Kristian Fulton will most likely take over as starters in 2021.

Malcolm Butler started his NFL career as an undrafted free agent pick-up by the New England Patriots out of West Alabama. Butler won two Super Bowls with the Pats, including Super Bowl XLIX against the Seattle Seahawks in which he had a game-clinching interception at the goal line.

Butler was selected for the Pro Bowl in 2015 and has a Second-Team All-Pro nod from 2016.

While his New England Patriots were getting beaten by Nick Foles and Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII, cornerback Malcolm Butler was unable to help his team. Although it was expected that he will be an important part of the Patriots defense in the game, Butler ended up sitting out the entire game on the bench. The 28-year-old ended up leaving the Patriots in the free agency and joined the Tennessee Titans.

Now, two months later, Butler spoke with Sports Illustrated and decided to share how he felt about not taking a single defensive snap in the most important football game of the year.

I just wanted to go up to [Bill] Belichick or [defensive coordinator] Matt Patricia and say, ‘This is how we’re going to end this?‘” – Butler shared. “I grew up in the Patriots system. I’m a well-mannered guy. I respect my authority. I just couldn’t ask them for something they didn’t want to do. I was close to going up there and saying what I wanted to say to Matt or Belichick, but I just stayed in my lane and did my job. I really wanted to go ask them, but I didn’t.

After the Super Bowl LII, Butler told reporters that the Patriots would have won the game if he was playing. He still thinks that way.

Would we have won if I played? Probably, maybe, I’m not sure.” – he said. “I would say we were short about one or two plays. I’ve seen a couple plays out there I could have made. It was just a coaching decision; it didn’t work out good for me, him or the New England Patriots organization.

Malcolm Butler joined the Patriots in 2014 and won two Super Bowls with the franchise. After his contract expired, he signed a five-year, $61 million deal with the Titans.
